And for everyone whining about debating.. it's FREE. All you have to do is learn how to use it and it isn't too difficult for you scripting types. The fact that a different approach other than "Smash!" is necessary suddenly makes it boring? I admit without CR2 my character was a little helpless, and the constant diverting was a little pointless without debate knowledge, but it's better than when most of the population didn't bother to make use of a GOOD addition to a skill that cost you zero lessons.

There should also be times when only violence is allowed, Skull for example.
Well, it was never an option to do away with combat during influencing altogether. Anyway... see latest event post!

I think he means that there should be times when Sanctuary doesn't work.

Ahhhh... okay, I didn't understand. We'll think about it, but I'm not sure how it will pan out.
It would have to be related to Tarox, the war planet, as opposed to any particular sign, I think.

I wasn't there for the influencing, but kudos on the change.
I also have to give two thumbs up for the person who wrote the events post, I almost died laughing when the Acknor chieftain ate the Estelbar ambassador. Quality stuff there.

I wouldn't have minded if debating had the same complexity of the combat system. It's a bit like paper rock scissors and so a large part of our interaction with the opposition is simplified and dumbed down in contrast to the PvP system that IRE boasts about. It's like all of a sudden our fighting options become punch kick and shoot wand and defences become block this block that and block whatever, it's just unappealing in comparison.
Though in the sense that it was different I enjoyed it myself to an extent. I seriously doubt it will offer as much thought as the other system though.

I missed it, I was asleep at the time, but I am glad the change was there.
I don't think there is any real need for a polarity of combat only village revolts, really, considering that combat is already over represented in regular village revolts and most aspects of the game.
I loved the event post too, by the by.

I likewise wasn't here for it but the response doesn't seem bad.. I haven't felt villages have been overly violent in recent memory but I'm not so hardass I don't understand majority of people want the idea of some peaceful villages. I don't see a huge problem with this.. it does give yet another dynamic to add to the MUD that gives you something else to excel and work at .. though I agree with Alger that if we start going indepth into villages then the debate code should be reviewed and made more interesting than 'rock paper scissors' type of action. Combat here is so complex that if we wish to see Influencing be anywhere near as comparible the debate code atleast should be reviewed.
That being said my questions are few..
1> When a village is peaceful what does that do to Crusade? Personally I think even in a peaceful village if Crusade is allowed it should carry some risk since it is such a powerful tool.
2> Same thing in a Violence only village. What does that do to campaigning?
3> Will it be announced when the village goes up what its status will be? Violence, Peaceful, Neutral? Until we can figure out some way of tracking these signs which may or may not be difficult I'm not sure.. still if we're going to start this up definatly going to want some idea of what it is when it goes up.

when yojimbo decided he didn't want fighting he shouted it so everyone could hear then he said he peaced the village, so i assume each village will just do somthing along those lines.

Not sure if it was mentioned yet, but it is annoying when CR1 enemies with nothing in the Infleunce skillset are able to beat me in debating just by defending. Your skill in Influence and maybe in hte city/commune should hold a major sway over how well you debate.
Terenas2005-07-26 01:17:39
That doesn't make sense. If someone actually bothered to learn how to debate, why shouldn't he be able to beat you?

Ummm, Debating is given to EVERYONE. Those who have Transcended Influencing should be FAR better in debating than those who only have the Inept or lower skill in it.
Terenas2005-07-26 01:36:58
I meant learn as in having a system and knowing what debate attack to use and what mindset to defend with.
Ethelon2005-07-26 01:59:16
I was trying to imply that for instance a Transcendant Influencer should do more Ego damage and take less Ego damage than someone who is inept.

1. I don't think it is.
2. There isn't Violence only, there's normal, peace, partial peace(meaning sometimes it's peaced).
3. Yes, they shout.

We were trying to figure out how often this would happen (and coincide with a village going into play), and ended up concluding 'probably not that often'. Any astrologers out there want to take a stab at guestimating?
