For example, the first thing we require our novices to do is find our guildhall. The directions we give are in the form: "From the Mother, follow the winding path northward, until you reach the highway. From there, turn to the east, but take the first path north and into the forest..." What they want to see is: N, NW, NE, NE, N, NE, E, N - something they can understand without thinking too hard.

During initial teaching, I try to encourage them to figure out how to use their abilities on their own, without us telling them "First, NATURE TALISMAN, then NATURE ROOTING..." - Instead, I tell them that in order to use the skills of Nature, they use wield a natural focus, and that they should summon forth their Nature Talisman from within the folds of Nature's embrace, or some such, trying to get them to check the AB lists themselves to find out how the skills work on their own. In the past, many took to this wonderfully - most of the newer novices recently haven't. They either didn't understand what I was trying to say and became frustrated, or they just kept asking me what command they should enter.

If I had been met with that when I first started playing achaea (my first mud), I wouldn't have stuck around. Newbies need to learn how to do stuff, the finer parts of rp should come later.

in addition to my last post, regarding giving syntaxes:

these days I usually talk to them IC via says, and if needed give them syntaxes via tells. That also introduces the newbie to the concept of keeping OOC to tells if it's deemed necessary. Or, if I figure I really have a newbie newbie in front of me, I just drop that and tell them that I usually wouldn't talk about syntaxes like this but since they're new I'll make an exception, and then I just walk them through it, more or less.

In the end, it's all a matter of being flexible and just adjusting to what the newbie already knows.

Flexibility is good!

Not introducing them to RP from the very start, and we end up with novices who want to have relationships with Magnagorans or Glomdoring folk and don't understand why that's against the rules. Leads to more frustration, pain, trouble in the end if we wait.

So we want to destroy the world... sue us

My comment about replacing references to Nazis with Blacktalon wasn't an attempt to liken your guild to any real world organization bent on world domination. I just thought that Delver's description fitted you the best.

Oh and Nyla, I'll leave you to guess who the idiot getting angry at the novice who didn't know how to use GNT was... laugh.gif

If Merloch would've had his way, novice Moondancers would've been told the Tower was in Northern Serenwilde and good luck, left to fend for themselves. The directions as written were a compromise between the typical easy e,n, blah blah and something more IC. When the Moondancers discovered this was a problem for some novices, we stepped up on watching them while they followed the directions and making sure they got help if needed. As far as I know, there hasn't been too many complaints about it since then.

There has been a huge influx of novices, and from watching the Moondancers, they ARE graduating. Suddenly I am seeing several more GR1 members than I have in a long time.

Just for reference, nazism isn't the word for somebody who thinks his way is the right one and no other way is possible.
You could use fanatical or zealot.
Fascism in general (the nazism was a branch of it) has that mind. This way you can also include the communists, the italian fascists, the nazis and the good christians in the crusades. And many others groups.

I always found it best to mix it a little....like *ponder*

Now that you have trained some in Discipline, you will find you have two abilities available to you. FOCUS BODY, which is the only means of curing paralysis, and Clotting, which will allow you to CLOT those nasty wounds that just won't stop bleeding.

Then if I have to explain with less RP and more 'duhism' I go to tells and explain carefully that it is an OOC comment. I've only had one person complain about the roundabout ways of doing things, cause they wanted it in the "okay fight with X do X to powergame oh and this is the l33t stuff". Every other novice I've trained (and gods that's alot LOL) has loved the mix. Least that's what they tell me anyway.
