I was looking through my list of available designs, and I saw something that bothers me a bit.
Let's compare this to the admin-created design:
The admin-created longsword:
A more standard longsword:
And the range of SHORTSWORDS:
Fully fledged two-handed weapons should not be cheaper than a pair of novice weapons.

I can just imagine the fit forgers are going to throw when they see this. *gets popcorn*

Xavius-
Wait, I'm confused here. The admin-created shortsword had steel 4 iron 1 coal 1 and the cartel created one had steel 10 silver 5 leather 2 bluetint 1. So in fact the cartel created a weapon that used more comms to forge for our novices and you're complaining?
Take a look at another cartel created longsword-
You carefully study a forging design.
Item: Longsword Type: Swords Org: Public
Outlay: steel 10 gold 4 leather 1
IMPORTANT: The main noun of this item MUST use this name: LONGSWORD
Appearance:
a leaf bladed longsword
Different weapons require different comms that vary from much more expensive than the originally designed one by the admins to much cheaper. I don't really see what the problem is here.

BLADES 898 isn't the admin design. I cherry-picked the least expensive and most expensive shortswords, just to give everyone an idea of the range.
The issue is that the bottom-end axes are just flat out too cheap. Cut that number in half. Five steel, one disposable comm for the equivalent of a longsword. That's cheap. Too cheap. As cheap as a shortsword, but with real weapon quality. You can't use that 'If you don't like it, don't use it' argument here, either. You have to stay competitive or you lose all your business.
Oh, and Sylphas, I'm a forger. It's about the only way to have open access to forging designs.

Ah. I can't really comment, since I neither make them nor use them, but all I that really seems weird to me is being able to forge 100 blades and only use one set of comms for them. Almost seems like you'd get stuck using the cheapest design, so you can afford better weapons, then the ones you really wanted. I know I wouldn't use a pretty design that cost me tons of gems or something, because I could never afford a half decent blade.

Quit trying to nerf my low production costs.

*throws a hissy fit*
*steals some popcorn*
there you are
Also...
Forging designs have a minimum number of comms. So far, I've never had a problem with the kinds of commodities I've used (and I have experimented quite a bit... the Charites probably hate me ) but only if I used less then a certain number. Which, in a way, makes sense in a guess, because after all you CAN make a certain size and shape of a certain mass of metals, regardless what they cost you.
And, cheap commodities are not necessarily beneficial, because you very soon run out of those. I know I've had quite some trouble getting enough iron for my forging needs for a number of months now. Never really had a problem with steel, except when I couldn't afford it.

Raise 'em. All of 'em. Make them on par with... ARTISAN THRONES! FOR NEWBIE SHORTSWORDS!
Then we'll see who has uber swords.

Nah. Either give forging a serious overhaul, with commodities having an effect on the weapon, way less randomness, and more general utilities patterns, to name a few, or leave it as it is. I'd rather not anyone changes a bit of this and that with forging...
(And give me purchaseable additional submission slots *lobby*)

Richter2005-08-02 20:32:53
Yeah, I always submit iron weapons. The fact that steel is better has no effect on the weapon, and it costs much less to make it out of iron.

This also rather...well... upsets me... that to get the absolute best equipment, you have to choose designs that have low amounts of jewels or suchlike in, and encourages people to be so very frugal with their commodities. It'd be nice if you either got all the commodities back, or none. No middle ground.
Singollo2005-08-02 21:34:34
To not feel bad I occasionally destroy commodities on accident. Feel better now? You better you ingrateful curs who don't rely on forging one bit.
And just so you know, to get the fullplate I have now, I spent over 30000 gold. I've spent at least that much trying to get an artifact sword. There is nothing cheap about forging.

Richter2005-08-02 21:38:22
Unless you have all metal designs with low comms. *twiddle*
Gwylifar2005-08-02 22:00:32
Singollo has a point: the cheapest plate costs way more than great robes, and the cheapest sword costs infinitely more than a cudgel, sickle, athame, or staff.
Unknown2005-08-03 08:38:20
Wish we could get all commodities back when smelting. It just doesn't make sense. Which serious smith would be stupid enough to chuck a sword with a wooden handle into his flames? Whoops, there goes that hilt. Oh well, let's make a dozend.
Unknown2005-08-03 11:27:05
I like it when someone buys few hundred gems for forging...
