What I want to know is, what is so god-awful about winning runner up that people are so upset by it?

I mean, considering how many entries there probably were, winning at all is a major accomplishment. I'm sure there's entries that took someone just as long to do that didn't even win merit. Be happy you won something at all. I am. I know my story isn't just the be-all and end-all in literature. I'm quite pleased with my runner up placing.

And Kaileigh, don't let anyone make you feel bad cause you won first place. Your peice was great and deserved it.
Aleron2005-08-02 23:31:34
Well, then perhaps I shoud spout the fact that I'm a Engish - Creative Writing major, who has been published in various short story and poetry magazines? Does that suddenly make my poem perfectly hunky dory?

Not -everyone- can win. Kaileigh's was the best this time around - that's just the way it is. You got given credits for doing something you're SUPPOSED to enjoy. You should be thanking the Divine for even allowing you to enter - hell, I remember when there wasn't even a contest, but people begged and pleaded for it. And now you're bitching because they like someone else's work better than yours? That's just pathetic. Kinda reminds me of pro-ball players. When was it that you guys replaced the passion for art with your wallet and trophy case?

@ Aleron

What the hell are you talking about? Let's have a look at my first post shall we?

QUOTE
Second place? *sighs* At least I'm getting compensation from Richter. I must have worked on that piece for 3 cumulative days over a 2 weeks... I'm curious to as what standard these pieces are being judged...

Second place always sucks, but the most I said was a f'ing "sigh" dude. Second, I said i was curious to as what standards are set up here.

Uh, cookie.gif

First of all, I brought up my education and experience to show that I KNOW art is judged by standards. I'm telling -YOU-, Aleron, and not Kaileigh (though you need to chill out, because firstly, you've never even come up at all, not even through vague reference). I'm telling you that I -know- there are standards that are there.

Want to know how I know? Experience. I'm not throwing my weight around, don't be daft. rolleyes.gif

You turned a simple defeat into a brawlfest to defend art I spent hour after hour on. Firstly you acuse me of being a sore loser, when I think everyone can see in my first post I wasn't, and then you bash on my art for being "CG" like I merely wiggled my mouse and that popped out.

And titling a work after its subject shouldn't a problem when it is the art that is to be critiqued. Calling it "Before the Glomdoring Forests" doesn't change the art.

EDIT: And to note, apparently you havent' wielded a weapon, his wrist isn't painfully turned down (I can do it without a mace, merely using my own forearm muscle) and I've seen people do it. It indicates a relaxed position and give the mace some weight to it. Don't think I merely DREW these things. I have to think of the little details to make the art more effective.
Richter2005-08-02 23:54:23
Okay, I apologize for letting this go on for this long.

Here's what we're going to do (omg mod abuse!)

We're going to play nice. We're going to stay on-topic (read the first post again in case you forgot what the thread was about).

The ones that didn't win will not spout off like an American Idol reject, because they, unlike the people from the TV show, can submit again next month.

Enough with the ranting, raving, etcetera. Guido's post was about *drumroll* How fast the Divine chose the entries and how good they were.

Don't make me come after your posts with a stick. Stop making people feel bad.

Love,
Richter

dry.gif I don't have a problem with second place either way, 'cause I'm more motivated to beat everyone's pants off next month. Now I have a month to whip up something glorious.

ninja.gif Time to step up the pressure. Hopefully they'll be quick next month too, I thought that was pretty great that I didn't have to wait too long.
Gwylifar2005-08-03 00:07:09
Simple clarification here. I am not asking for the contest to be re-evaluated and do not want it to be. However, if by chance it should be, I would like my piece removed and any honors or prizes I got for it returned. I'm tired of people pretending this is about being a "sore loser" and using that to ignore the question and the matter of principle. All I wanted by entering was to put it where people could see it, and I can do that another way if need be. And in any case, the principle of the rules is far more important than all that.

So, if any admins are reading this, please remove my story from the competition for July and remove whatever I got for it. I transferred the credits so you'll have to take them back from Ysbail, not me.
Unknown2005-08-03 00:37:56
My god you people get over it. If you can't handle a little competition and criticism don't submit your pieces for public scrutiny.
Unknown2005-08-03 00:48:19
wtf.gif

Quidgyboo.

Can you see my ass? No? That's because you won't get off of it.

Pause for a moment, actually READ the posts, pause again for thought, then come back. I think you'll find that I haven't once complained that I got second place at all, and that I'm merely downtrodden for not winning first prize. Of course, last I checked, I'm merely a human growing up in Western Society... so I can't be pinned for that either.

Oh grow up you spoilt brat, you can't get things your way all the time. The winner did a better piece, the end, get over it.
Unknown2005-08-03 00:59:39
What the flying **** is your problem? Do you enjoy being an incredible ass or something, because I sure am getting that impression. In fact, if I recall I think this is the -second- time I've butted heads with you.

Spoiled brat? **** you, straight up. I put a comment up here that I've taken my defeat in step and I'm working to try to kick everyone's ass next month. Get over it? I've been over it asshole, people like you keep pissing me off when I'm trying to move on. Why don't you find someone -else- to rag on.

Shove it.
Alger2005-08-03 01:02:07

I should draw more i've submitted like two for artisnals in a span of a year, heh sad.

That depends, do you enjoy being an idiot?

I don't remember ever speaking to you so you it musn't have been a very interesting argument.

You're being a censor.gif, so I'm having fun ragging on you, why would I move on?

EDIT: Watch your language. ~Shiri~
Shiri2005-08-03 01:08:03
Quit it.
Veonira2005-08-03 03:43:31
Okay, honestly, this thread is kind of disgusting. I think Gwylifar did ask a valid question, and it was a question that other people had, but some of us just didn't want to ask it because we didn't want it to hurt someone's feelings.

Aleron, what I'm about to say is not me "ripping" at your poem, or the fact you won, because I don't care. I think it's a great poem, and I do see how it's Lusternian, and I'm glad you won, congrats. I didn't even expect to win anything, I'm perfectly happy with merit, and I didn't even write my story for bardic. I wrote it for a city contest (hence it being more historical) and figured I may as well submit it. I'm just wondering that, given that this announce post had the specific sentence, "Also, now may be a good time to remind everyone that we judge upon those entries that relate to Lusternia and give extra weight to how uniquely Lusternian an entry is." I want to know how this relates to poetry.

I, too, don't really have a thing for poetry. I like very few poems, and I don't really get "into them" I guess. So what I really want is an answer to this question from the Admins. When you say how uniquely Lusternian an entry is, I'd really like some sort of statement about what that actually means. When I hear that, I assume that it includes direct references to Lusternia and happenings within it. But, and I'm guessing here, I've come to realize after looking at the entries that it's only concerning the fact that a story or piece of artwork was actually just written for Lusternia, not that it is laced with lusternian references.

And by the by, I also have a question about artisinal (please, God, don't rip into me artists. I didn't even SUBMIT for artisinal.)

Why did Sobran win second place in Artisinal? This is an honest question. It is a collage, it is not uniquely his. HELP BARDIC specifically says...

"Artistic/Artisanal entries must
1 - be completely original artistic works, done by you only.
2 - be distinctly Lusternian.*
3 - not be collages.
4 - cover any subject within that framework (history, portrait, map, etc)"

Can an Admin respond to this? If I knew collages/photomerges were allowed, I'd have submit one long ago :/. I'm not saying it should be revoked, if it's allowed by the rules then that's cool. But it'd be nice to know if that's allowed for future reference.
Olan2005-08-03 04:14:40
I remember submitting a poem for an Achaean bardic once. I thought it was a pretty good poem, and I've studied literature a bit. I like poetry, and I like writing it, but I rarely share it. It had to be pretty decent in my eyes to be worth submitting.

I even role played out my inspiration, literally wrote it sitting on the cliffs above Tasur'ke, it drew from the room descriptions, mentioned the city, and had a metaphorical reference to the changing of the two Sea gods, both of whose order I served in. I thought it was good, and Achaean. I even put the name of the city in, just in case the judges hadn't wandered through that part of Tasur'ke lately.

I got told it wasn't Achaean enough to even judge. sad.gif

Don't think I submitted again.

Dear mother of god am I glad I didn't enter this month... This is just rather.. stupid, so I'm not commenting on the rants.

Kaileigh, You're pic is awesome. happy.gif I got to see it ahead of time and I knew you were going to win, so yeah.. I'll just enter my pic the month you get artist's block.

I like the pic of Richter.. it's really nice! sad.gif I wish I could color that good. You can tell (or at least I can...) that it took a long arse time to do. That's one of the reasons I hardly ever enter anymore... I'm lacking in patience and all that when it comes to working with my computer.

Everyone else's drawings were good. They won because they deserved it and I don't think there's anything wrong with getting a merit or 2nd place or whatever it is that's causing so much trouble here.

I'll read the bardics when I'm not half asleep.. I like to read things slowly and doing it at 1 in the morning isn't a good idea. unsure.gif
