You know what makes me sad? Very very sad? I love Square. I love Enix. I have HATED every Squrenix game that I have played. They've all been boring, unimaginative, and uninteresting. I hope against all hope thet FFXII has a storyline of the style I expect from a Square title, and not the boring/uninteresting stuff they've been doing =\\

And Monolith Soft needs to get some game designers to go with their plot writers, dang it! They're games (Xenosaga/Xenosage2) have sucked horribly gameplay-wise, and been very interesting plot-wise. If you don't remember, they are the same team that made Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, and Xenogears - they split off from Square after Square screwed them time and again, especially with Xenogears (cutting all funding when the game was 80% complete to funnel the funds into FFVII, which is why the last bit of Xenogears is narrated).

And the best RPG of all time, gameplaywise, is Nethack biggrin.gif *duck*

Which games? A lot of 'em were in production prior to the merger (I think Star Ocean 3 is one of those.)

And yes, Monolith Soft needs to wake itself up and make a game with great gameplay value and not the 20-hour junk I've been playing. Xenogears made you want to say "When the hell is this ending??" and it had to be shortened due to release schedule (and fund cuts, like you said), and that was only ONE out of six episodes. I'm wondering what the hell is going on with them seriously. I know a game designer/some-position person quit not too long ago, but eh... who knows. Maybe they'll give up and make a great book series.

I'm more interested in Mistwalker (New company. I think the creator of the FF series is doing that one) now unless Xenosaga 3 makes up for the last two games.

Er... But FFX didn't have ATB, and that's still the same genre. Neither did FFX-2, as far as I'm aware, and that's in the same genre, for all its crapness. Neither will FF12, and that's still Final Fantasy.

Though saying "ATB" is a bit of a generalisation. FF6+7's ATB is very different from FF8's ATB, which is different again to FF9's ATB.

In fact, now I think about it, the games don't really have all that much in common at all besides the running-around-as-a-character part that makes it an RPG. In FF8 the other characters in your party followed you around. In FF7 and 9, they appeared when they needed to. FFX used some funky camerawork to make them appear naturally, as if they'd always been there.

And they all had different magic systems. Magicite, Materia, GFs, FF9's rather oldschool approach, the sphere grid. ...dress spheres *choke*

FF12 doesn't even have battle transitions, that's a break and a half from tradition :|

In summary, I've changed my opinion. The Final Fantasy games have very little in common other than gorgeous FMVs (if you count the ones they went back and added when they released the old games) and being made by Square (which equates to a strange obsession with Nordic mythology and a character named Cid o_O). And being RPGs, of course.

The characters following you around or popping out when you needed them wasn't part of the battle system, it was part of the visual effects of how the battle started. ATB was the "you've got a bar this long and can attack when it reaches the end of it and enemies have thier own and will attack you regardless of if you punch in commands" thing.

Xenosaga 2 had the feel of FFX 2 o_O That scared me. Well, not the plot, which was interesting, but the little gameplay it had was FFX 2 style x_x

Sadly, the emphasis seems to have shifted from good gameplay/story to shinier graphics/style in RPGs in general =\\

Really? I didn't play 2 (yet) because I heard it wasn't worth it, especially since they got rid of item shops and all of this other weird junk.

I don't know.. I kind of liked FFX-2 (I didn't have any other games at the time! ninja.gif), but I definitely know what you mean. Nowadays I can't find any games that I'm interested in buying because they focus on pretty-pretty princess instead of in-depth story/gameplay. I'm pretty much waiting for Kingdom Hearts 2/Final Fantasy 12 and trying to force my way through Star Ocean 3 (I really mean force. My characters sometimes sit on the edge of the screen and don't fight at all), but meh.. starting to give up on the RPG genre until I graduate and get experience to become a Producer at one of these companies. (Square is hiring... ninja.gif)

Oh.. forgot about this.

And uh-huh, Shorlen. I figure I've been playing games since I could speak so.. might as well try to make 'em. I lost interest in psychology as a career (Even though it is customer service that pays well tongue.gif) and nothing really has touched me in a way that would make me want to do it as a career so I figure I should take my chances. If not then.. well... I'll still have two degrees to do something with (Doubling in Japanese Lang/Studies and Programming for anyone who didn't read the college thread).

I thought Xenosaga was boring, I never finished it.

Some of you may think this blasphemy or whatever, but I am personally not interested FF12 at all. I can't wait for Radiata Stories, Dragon Quest 8, and Fire Emblem for GC.

I'm looking for more info on that lately. It seems like it'll be a good game. I could NEVER get into Dragon Quest though since I didn't get into the older ones. I think I had bought 6 or 7 (Whichever came out on PS1) and returned it the same day since I was stubborn, but maybe I'll go back and give it a chance.

8 does look good though. I'm personally waiting on games that'll probably never reach U.S. shores, like all of the newer Tales games for PS2. So censor.gif pretty.. wub.gif

Edit: And I don't know if I'm looking forward to FF12, but I'll still play it. It looks nice, I haven't played a decent RPG since I bought Kingdom Hearts in June when it was $20 and.. did I mention needing a decent console RPG? I only own a PS2 if anyone is throwing suggestions around. (God, I started playing Star Ocean 3 in the arena and it froze on me when I got to like.. the 15th ranking. Haven't turned it on since).

KH 2 comes out soon. wub.gif

My last Dragon Quest game was 2, for the Nintendo. 1 is better.

I kinda thought that all FF was conducted within the same universe.
Hence why there are always similar traits within each world (Thinking Goa'uld/Ancient style planet seeding) such as similar monsters, Moogles, Chocobos, Magics, Summons, etc

Also i really want to be a game developer (Ugh i've been crafting a world for ages hehe my main characters are fun)
Suhnaye2005-11-13 14:45:53
I liked Xenosaga 1 and hated 2... In two they went way too much for makin it look pretty and destroyed a lot of the fun of it... Also, I was pissed that they changed how the mechs worked... I loved jumpin into one and tearing the hell out of bad guys just for stress relief! tongue.gif

After reading that quote from the RPGFan FFXII Preview... I'm now looking forward to FFXII... Looks like they're throwing all the good stuff in a bowl and tryin to keep the crap out of it... Whether the story and gameplay will be as good as the battle system, I dunno, I guess we'll see.

It might be possible that the reason they're stalling the release is they want people with newly bought PS3's to buy their game right off the bat?... PS3's supposed to be out in spring sometime isn't it?

I recommend playing Fable: The Lost Chapters for Xbox, Morrowind Game of the Year Edition PC or XBOX, Star Ocean:Till the End of Time for PS2, Growlanser Generations for PS2, Ys: The Ark of Napishtim for PS2, Lunar 1 and Lunar 2 for PS1, Radiata Stories for PS2, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 and 2 for PS2/Xbox, Champions of Norrath 1 and 2 for PS2/Xbox, Jade Empire on XBOX, Tales of Symphonia for GameCube, The Bard's Tale for PS2/XBOX (DO NOT TAKE THIS GAME SERIOUSLY, lord knows the game doesn't), Dark Cloud 2 for PS2(DC1 as well if you really want, but it was crap), Shadow Hearts and Shadow Hearts: Covenant for PS2, The Arc the Lad games for PS2 were entertaining, though nothing like the one for PS1(play that if you can find it), La Pucelle: Tactics for PS2, and I guess my one guilty pleasure of a psuedo-RPG would have to be the Pokemon series. I've played each and everyone of these games as well as own them. These were the ones I pretty much enjoyed the most.

I absolutely adored Star Ocean until the end of it. Then I was just like "WTF man?" doh.gif
