Can anyone suggest some books (or, even better, serieses) to read? Pretty much any fantasy, sci-fi, or humor will do as long as the plot is decent and not retarted. Just... stuff that's good!
Soll2005-08-04 23:33:58
Hmmm...
The Dark Materials trilogy(The Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass), Philip Pullman. I loved all three, couldn't stop reading 'em.

Already read and own them. Those are, indeed, good books though

Darren Shan Series? Eragon(Eldest - Sequel, coming soon)?

It's actually called "His Dark Materials"
I'm not sure what you've already read, so I'll chime in with the standard George RR Martin/Robert Jordan note. Also Terry Pratchett for amazing comedy fantasy. Robin Hobb is also big on my list of writers at the moment. She has ten books out, and all are excellent - nine are in three trilogies, roughly in chronological order and all concerned with events in one world. The tenth is something totally different. Like I said, they're all very good.

I personally enjoyed R.A. Salvatore's series about the dark elf, Drizzt Do'Urden. It starts with the Icewind Dale trilogy, has three books about Drizzt alone before that, and continues on with the whole gang for another, oh, eight or so books. I lost count, but I own them all.
The Dragonlance Chronicles trilogy is great as well. Dragons of *insert season here*. Margaret Weiss and Tracey Hickman, I believe.
Those books contain the characters Richter is most like, Jarlaxle Baenrae from Salvatore's books, and Raistlin Maejere from the other ones.

! You're right! Bah! I can no longer hold the title of "Dark Materials" Lord of Knowledge! Shamed! Shamed, I say! Take my sash from me!
Seriously... I thought I knew like, everything about those books. Foiled by something like -that-. That's not good.

Men. One-track minds, all of them.
I only read one of the Dragonlance books, but it was pretty good. Doesn't four make it a quadrilogy, though?
I'd be interested to know the titles and order of those Drizzt books. Everyone seems to know about them, but I've never read them.

Not quite what my mind's usually thinking about, if you get me.
Not sure where that came from. Oh right! You made it up!
Shamarah2005-08-05 00:12:31
I've read Eragon, read Wheel of Time up to Crossroads of Twilight (which I didn't bother with since everyone says it sucks), I haven't got to read A Storm of Swords yet since it's checked out of the library and I don't want to buy such a huge book but I've read the others in Song of Ice and Fire. I'm also working my way through Discworld, read most of them but still have to get my hands on a few.
Robin Hobb looks really good from a search for her on randomhouse.com, I'll try and pick up a few of hers, as well as Dragonlance. I've tried to get Salvatore's books but my library doesn't have them, guess I'll have to go to the bookstore.
Thanks for the recommendations (though more are by all means welcome! I always tear through books really quickly )

Ditto. I'll be stealing any suggestions I haven't read yet.
Oh oh! I liked Windsinger/Slaves of the Mastery/Firesong(William Nicholson).. () too. They were pretty cool.

Yup, I've read Eragon and I hear the sequel (and movie) are due out some time this year. But, that's just a rumor.
As for series, I've gotten into the Ender Wiggins Saga, but Orson Scott Card. I'm not really an Sci-fi type either. The books are: Ender's Game, Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide and Children of the MInd. That's all I can think of.
I've been reading the new Vampire: the Requiem series, too. But I have to say, I've just been reading to get a better understanding of how to play out my characters. But its an OK series and its already on its third book.

Salvatores books in chronological order (that you should read them in): The Crystal Shard, Streams of Silver, The Halfling's Gem (Icewind Dale Trilogy), Homeland, Exile, Sojourn (The Dark Elf Trilogy), Canticle, In Sylvan Shadows, Night Masks,The Fallen Fortress, The Chaos Curse (Cleric Quintet), The Legacy, Starless Night, Seige of Darkness, Passage to Dawn (The Legacy of the Drow), The Silent Blade, Spine of the World, Servant of the Shard, Sea of Swords (Paths of Darkness), The Thousand orcs, The lone Drow, The Two Swords (Hunter's Blade Trilogy)
Read all of these. They're amazing books.

There's books that come after Windsinger? I'll have to get those, I liked that book.
And I absolutely Orson Scott Card, I've read everything I know of by him except Magic Street and the new shadows book, both of which I need to get.

Also, in addition to those books, R.A. Salvatore's coming out with Promise to the Witch King, a sequal to Servant of the Shard (paths of darkness trilogy) in October. Can't wait!

Oh, has anyone read the series about World of Pern or Dragonriders or Pern books? I can't remember the title of the author, but I hear they are very good books. Also, there's a bunch of MUSHes based off of that series. I bought an audiobook of the very frist book in the series and I just couldn't stand the narrator. After the frist 10 minutes I throw out the CD. I just figured I'd just buy the book instead.
edited after reading Nine Breaker's post: Neil Gaiman's American Gods is really good, I hear.

If you like dark fantasy, or fantasy in general, I highly suggest you getting the Coldfire trilogy by C.S. Friedman. I personally found the series to be unique, fresh and very enjoyable. I highly reccommend this one.
Neverwhere, by Neil Gaiman, is also an excellent book. It's an easy read, but it's a really, good book. Great ideas and imagination all around.

Try "The view from the mirror quartet" by Ian Irvine. Or the Well of Echoes quartet. Same author. Good stuff.
Tsuki2005-08-05 01:35:11
Pern is Anne McCaffrey. She's got a lot of good stuff that's not all connected.
Some others that haven't been mentioned ... David Eddings (Belgariad and Mallorean series (and related), Elenium, Tamuli sets, and The Redemption of Althalus), Kristen Britain (Green Rider and First Rider's Call), Maggie Furey (Aurian books, Shadowleague saga started good but I haven't yet been able to find and read more), Garth Nix (Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen).
Mm. There's others, of course, but just a few is good to start probing around.

See if you can find the old Spelljammer series. It's probably out of print but if you don't mind hunting for it over IRC or something (I'm going to look at getting the couple books I missed from something Eiru showed me) you might find you enjoy it.
A couple of the Ravenloft books are also not cruddy and cliche. Also old and probably out of print, mind.
