Really like the new skill too, as well as what is planned in the future with the libraries. But with the addition of all these really nice new trade skills, the one trade per person limit is getting more and more restricting..

That's a good thing, IMO. More and more people can have functions in the economy, without having everyone being undercut all over the place. It might EVEN lead to shortages of a certain resource (commodities required for a certain trade, or adequate people to supply the produce of said trade) which I think would be interesting.
Veonira2005-08-15 16:00:51
I agree. There should be a way to buy another tradeskill or whatever, like 500 credits to learn a second one. But then you could only learn two maximum.
Ceres2005-08-15 16:01:06
No, it's not interesting.
It's irritating.

This is... sooo... awsome... the coolest skill EVAR. *dies*
Thank you!
Hmm... the ab files for the skills are kind of vague though (or maybe I'm just dense)... are they still being worked on?

The only problem with it I can see, is that, like Artisan, once you have all the books you need, you're set. Demand is going to be huge for a while, then taper off to nearly nothing.

Another point to consider with that is that the larger books aren't really needed. If a journal can store 50 pages, who needs a tome or a manual? Unless they intend to enforce page length, that is...
EDIT: Plus scrolls are like wands. You buy 'em once, then don't buy 'em again, for a really long time, you just get 'em enchanted. This is not exactly a trade skill, it is a skill for a tome at trans, and speaking the languages, with a little trade on the side. Note that I am not complaining because that's more or less what I want out of a tradeskill, but it's my assessment anyway.
Sylphas2005-08-15 16:39:37
Mhmm. Even 50 pages is rather large for most things, I can't think of any reason you'd need 100 or more pages, unless pages became drastically shorter. Especially since the difference between a journal and a tome is about 20k or so. For most things I do, scrolls are going to be fine.
Veonira2005-08-15 16:52:11
I think it's cool there are different types though. I guess it just depends on whether or not you actually care if you have a scroll or a codex or whatever.

I guess that's true. But I don't think wanting a codex over a scroll because a codex is cooler is necessarily going to overcome the 23k odd price gap for a marginal increase in functionality. (Still not complaining! Honest!)
Unknown2005-08-15 16:57:25
Yay for books and libraries!
Corr2005-08-15 16:59:36
The expensive price sounds like they are trying to make books and scrolls exist in a similar ratio as they did back in the old days when the printing press was just invented.
Most people have scrolls, and only the organizations with lots of money could afford real books.
I'm curious about textbooks. Are the guilds going to be able to afford to give out books to every one of their novices?

In real life, there's a massive difference between say, a pamphlet, and a codex. However, in Lusternia, I doubt we're going to have 300 page math textbooks, and massive dictionaries and such. There's simply not enough information in the world to support that large of a non-fiction work. And fictional works, well, if you write several hundred pages and anyone actually wants to read it, that's great, but I'm not sure why you'd put that in a MUD instead of sending it to a publisher.
Veonira2005-08-15 17:06:32
I wouldn't mind paying the gold for say, a codex (I don't know if that's the one I'd choose, but just using it as an example.) for the guild. And I think our guild could actuallly use some journals with lots of pages for some of our paths and their writings.

I think they'll get rid of all the helpscroll libraries safe for HELP, once the whole skill and what's to it is implemented.
