The Canis genus includes wolves, coyotes, dingoes and jackals. And the Grey Wolf is the ancestor of the Domestic Dog. (yes, wikipedia ftw) Translated, Volkh may have had a thing for canines so he could have created the various different types OR wolf could encompass the different animals in the Canis genus

You're applying RL knowledge to Lusternia. The domesticated (italicized for emphasis, not correction) dog only came about because of human intervention a loooong time ago. In Lusternia, there is no human intervention (I'll even be nice and say any intervention in general) - just the Elder Gods and the Great Nature spirits - so the concept of a domestic dog shouldn't even exist in the first place until after the Elder Wars.
