Yeah, I didn't expect it so soon either after December's release and with all the changes going on, and also because in most cases a new story ties into to a previous or ongoing event. (Or is it forshadowing ) Or maybe this one doesn't have any of that and it was just the right time to release it.
I see the lack of gods sharded being a result--the book says that there were dozens of others, not just the ones that remained safe in the basin of life, so I doubt the book would list everyone since dozens were doing it.
One flaw in the explanation I see is the existence of the Daggers of Reincarnation. This allows you to actually change your race! So what happens to the soul. If you reincarnate from Mugwump to Tae'Dae, what happens to the soul involved. (Heck, maybe this will get people to pause more before changing their race...or not...)

Doesn't change much. The Portal is still the "It's magic!" answer to those sort of questions. Along with marking someone out of the portal as an "extraordinary person" it also makes the abilities of their soul much more fluid, not locked into just one role.
I'm mostly excited as the souls sort of continue the entire theme of Lusternia being a game about the first law of thermodynamics. After Yudhe, Dynara, and Magnora you never see anything new created. It's all just transformed energy. Without Dynara or Magnora the ability for energy to be created or destroyed has actually left the first world.

Daggers of reincarnation and the one free reincarnation everyone gets are supposed to act as "revisions" to the Tapestry, since not everyone starts out as the right race. You're just a loboshigaru's soul in a merin's body.

How do you explain the souls bifurcating then? They seem to operate on Spiral Energy by the looks of the last book.

Either it will be explained at a later date, or, magic.
Shiri2011-01-21 16:51:00
Well, I was fine with magic, I'm just not sure how it fits into this weird paradigm of Othero's.

I'm not sure where it doesn't fit in. They're like magic soul cells. Soul mitosis. It's not creating anything, just transforming energy passed down from the splintered divine.

Totally.
At any rate, the canonical explanation of reincarnation seems to be that you're a shard stuck in the wrong body, and you're asking the Fates "wtf fix me nao." Presumably the reason you can reincarnate multiple times in a row is that you're just a ridiculous screwup and the Fates are laughing their mysterious asses off at you.
Eventru2011-01-21 16:55:44
It seems simple to me, regarding reincarnation - perhaps an error simply occurs, and mortals return in the wrong body. So Mojo Jojo goes in as a furrikin, but comes out as a dracnari. No memory, so he doesn't know what's going on - or that he's not what he's supposed to be.
There, simple explanation on Reincarnation!

Idea: As the new soul becomes stronger and stronger then is later crushed under a bridge, the soul's "essence" for lack of a better word cannot fit in a single body/splinters because it wants to and boom, you now have two new reincarnated mortal shards.
Lendren2011-01-21 17:26:43
The idea that souls can be split in half, to explain increasing population, makes me think of the Minbari philosophy from Babylon 5. They believed in reincarnation too, with the souls of each generation born into the next generation. The concern arose that these souls were spread thinner in each generation, so that each generation was less than the one before it -- the leaders, the poets, the scientists in each generation were not as impressive as the previous. Lusternia could run up against the same idea, though for a different reason. (For the Minbari, their total population was pretty steady, but they were losing souls by having them reborn in another race, so they believed. For Lusternia, it's because of the same amount of total soul being spread over a larger number of mortals.)

Why not blame those terribly naughty humans for soul migration?

Can the main site be updated with the new books? >.> I am already behind in reading these

What I personally found interesting (but never really clicked for me) was that it seemed to me the forms sharded Elders could take differed from their original form. I mean, it sounded like to me that Loboshi sharded into a lupine form but maybe didn't look like that herself. So now, if say....Eventru sharded, we wouldn't have glitzy gold bearded people running around but could be some form of tentacular monstrosity that reflects his inner e-soul.
Unless I misunderstood that anyway, but it's an interesting idea nonetheless, I think.

I thought this was obvious, given that Bollikin became all different types of furrikin (certainly, he wasn't some eerie amalgam of turtles, squirrels, foxes, bears, etc etc etc etc etc), and that Dracnoris (who was a Primal God and so decidedly not star-shaped) became the very star-shaped dracnari.
(Though I think what you're more surprised by is that Loboshi may not have been lupine herself!)

You could make it fit either hypothesis if you wanted, the question is why you would think it was evidence in particular for the thermodynamic paradigm. So far as we know the reason they kept forgetting stuff could be the normal way things are forgotten through mortal history IRL, not necessarily soul dilution, so that doesn't say much.

That's precisely what the Minbari did, in fact. If it was good enough for them, it's good enough for us.
(Though their explanation turned out to have a far more Hallifaxianly-interesting explanation.)

I was thinking this too, especially since it seems to be suggesting that maybe Tae didn't look like a bear. Xyl must look like a Lucidian though, he references his crystal skin a lot. Mugwumpois may not have been amphibious, since it took Xyl a while to figure out it was her shards he was seeing.
This sounds like a question for Ask Estarra!
