I hate to say it... well, no, I don't. Any text reference to taint as a skill... ie, survey... is entirely OOC. If your character can't see taint, then no amount of "CHECK SURVEY" will change that "forest" into "tainted forest." Period.

OOCly, sure, we're tainted as heck. But we are roleplaying here.

It's more than a text reference. Every Geomancer knows if they try to taint a shadow forest, nothing in it is going to change.

It's IC.

And it's perspective. OOCly, of COURSE we'll see Tainted Forest. But game mechanics really shouldn't be used like that.

I'd like Crow/Night totems to change SURVEY so they can't see Tainted Forest. It would just say "forest".

That would force every single person in Glomdoring to take on the "THE TAINT IS NOT REAL" thing, which would be horrible. Terrible. Really, really bad.

The terrain is that of a (technically tainted but since Viravain's nucking futs, we're going to say it's not tainted) forest.

Survey is IC.

The text that it returns is not. It's like that thread about the geomancer wasteland "sickening" the land, it's all about perception. If my character cannot see taint, he cannot see it, no matter how much it is referred to. As such, the references are *not* IC, as a character he CANNOT see them.

A lot of things are described to give an OOC feel to things so that we, as players, can understand and somewhat relate to what is going on. That does not mean our characters are forced to see things that way.
