You can use it with full features indefinitely. The only thing you can't do is use the spell checker, and you have to wait the 10 seconds before it'll start.
You're right, it isn't technically free, but it's similar to Lusternia; you don't have to pay if you don't want to.

No, it's not similar to Lusternia at all.
Lusternia, you are permitted to pay without playing.
MUSHclient, you can get away with paying without playing.
You can also probably get away with stealing your neighbors' stuff, and some things from the local supermarket, if you're the sort of person that doesn't mind doing stuff like that.
But the guy who wrote MUSHclient doesn't get paid for his work unless someone pays him. He's nice enough to not put crippling features into his product and people take advantage of his kindness by stealing from him. If you want to be one of those people, go ahead. Just don't do it under some illusion that you're not what you are.

hmm Ethelons system is quite nice. but looks like i'm going to need a bit of money for it to work for me, so not used to carrying around the various cures, i've always been able to cure the afflictions my self... then i was introduced to scalping

Nothing in life is free, stop looking for hand outs and accept that you get what you pay for. My adbvice to you, buy zmud, and but some credits in lusternia. These are both products worth paying for, so please, please stop trying to hitch a free ride

Even I'm not that condescending about money. SOME people can't afford to spend money on Lusternia, SOME people go to college, SOME people have no money due to circumstances beyond their control. Just because you may be one of the people that helps support the game with a monetary contribution does NOT give you the right to look down on others for not purchasing credits/zmud/a system.
People like Ethelon make free systems for people that cannot afford them. Basic Zmud is free, nexus is free, using someone else's Zmud key like I do (yes, I know it's "stealing") is free, etc etc etc. There are ways for people to be able to enjoy this game without spending hundreds of dollars on it.
Kthx. Bai.

Is there a free (even if it's crummy) system floating around for Zmud? I'm absolutely horrible with scripting in Zmud, and find myself so frustrated whenever I try to do anything besides make simple trigs and aliases. Tried the Mushclient one and I found the client very... unpleasant. Maybe I'm just used to Zmud, but yeah... Original question:

Regardless of what answers you get for this, if you have zMUD alias/trigger questions and I'm online, feel free to ask me. I'm not good enough at combat to make a descent system, but I can usually answer questions about it. I know the methodology and technique, I just don't know what's best to do when and such, nor do I have the time to really learn.

Same here. Feel free to ask any questions via a PM.
