The Name has Power...

In some of my paper RPGs, I've noticed that sometimes Deities or powerful beings (even wizards) can hear their names and might react to it if they are said casually. (Use the name of a demon casually, suddenly he appears in front of you).

I suspect Lusternia might have a filter that allows the Immortals to hear when somebody says, tells, or names them on a channel, maybe a macro they can shut on and off...if there isn't I'd be very surprised.

I know there's an ability to detect if somebody scries you. I wonder if there could be a (transcendent) ability like deathsight that allows you to "hear" the message a user sent via tells, says, or channel commands if your name is spoken.

The powerful could then be feared. Image if Daevos or Ibaesha could hear any mention or whisper of their names.

Then you get people shortcutting names by calling them 'The Big D', or 'Chef-Ibby, yo.' Or stuff. Would end up being a roughly useless idea.

However, I still love it! biggrin.gif

In fact Soll, that's my intention. They could RP it like the "Black Lord" or the "Kitchen Witch". I never intended it to be a way for people to spy on combat alerts, but rather it's intent is to not anger a powerful being casually by using his or her name in vain.

If it's a major concern, maybe it can be limited to titans and demigods.

Still love it. Titans/Demigod's would be a nice addition, I think, since they are more powerful/magical than normals, and to have a piece of passive magic working continually underneath whatever else would be quite cool. Good RP aspect for them, too.

Hehe, yeah, I love that idea! wub.gif
I'd pull my next creditbuy a bit forward just to trans that skillset.

And of course it makes those privacy rooms and abilities more relevant.

I hereby grant this idea the Guido Stamp of Approval.

Damn. This idea's dead, now. Might as well delete the thread.

I think the Gods can just see anything, at their discretion, can't they?

I'm sure they can actively spy on people/places/things, channels, etc. But I don't think somebody looks for every occurance of their name in the logs. Considering it took them 30 hours to find the gold bug, it musn't be easy to be "omniscient".

I would suspect they have a conversation filter or something to detect when some are speaking about them, which they choose to turn on/off or respond/ignore as needed.

Unknown2005-08-28 23:28:27
Also, the the gods cannot hear whenever their name is said. Why not? Because if they did, I would have been banned sooooo many times by now. Jack and I used to sit around telling each other how pimp Fain and Raezon are, how we want Viravain to die a horrible death, and some rather unspeakable things about Terentia.
Unknown2005-08-28 23:31:00
How do you know they just have their filters off or choose to ignore you? If they were always responding to statements, they'd never get any coding work done.
Unknown2005-08-28 23:33:09
Actually, the reason I don't think they have one is because they would get spammed a lot, unless they were just sitting around doing nothing and seeing what people had to say about them.

They can check logs of people's messages and tells, though, even if you delete them all. 'Tis how Terentia discovered my betrayal. Either that or stupid Brona forgot to delete his messages... grumble.

Divine can see when they're mentioned. I imagine it's like mobtells, players can be toggled on/off. But I do know Divine were just 'bout always listening to me. tongue.gif

If this ability were implemented I imagine it would be more akin to a sense of 'ears burning' than actually hearing what people are saying in tells or says. If I create someone named 'Mag', suddenly I've got a backdoor into hearing most combat aetherwaves.

So it would be more like, 'Your ears burn as Elryn casually mentions your name.' I can't see how it would be terribly useful other than for additional spam, but in that form I can't see a problem.
Unknown2005-08-29 00:50:34
Or maybe like, a 2-3 word radius of your name.

You hear Daevos tell someone, "...the archway, Kalodan. Come around.."
Unknown2005-08-29 00:54:45
That would work. Then in private rooms or with lowmagic blue you don't hear anything.
Unknown2005-08-29 01:02:33
Precisely.
Cwin2005-08-29 03:27:18
Then it just sounds like a passive Eavesdrop. Not bad for a skill (Notice (word): catch people speaking about a certain word) but doesn't realy show off the 'power of my name' thing.

They don't have to hear the entire message realy. Just a phrase like:

You sense (person) using your Rightious name.

And give it to Demigods. It'll play up the whole 'I'm a God..at least more God than YOU!" without it being too abusive. It'll also mean you could be 'requested' by mearly saying your name.

Cwin says "Kalodan, Kalodan, where is my Kalodan."

Kalodan tells you "You rang?"

..or else scare the living censor.gif out of novices.

Newbie tells Anothernewbie: "Well, there's plenty of people here. Cwin, for example..."

Cwin tells Newbie: "HOW DARE YOU SPEAK MY NAME!

Newbie is slain by a heartattack.

I bet folks would rush to bash just for that ALONE. laugh.gif
