Ok, so whats with all the golden metal and pipes and rivets and spinning cog-wheels? Its all very...technological.
Unknown2005-08-30 06:17:32
hmm, I never really thought about it before, I looks nice. I've spent many a stretch of bored minutes watching the wheels turning, but I geuss it doesn't really have anything to do with the game.
Meh It doesn't have to it looks cool.

I'd bet its tied into the fact that Magnagora/Taint is basically the equivilent of an industrial revolution. Mag being an "engine of transformation".. producing the taint.. its all very Industrial Era Britain, i've always thought. The dense fog in London, for instance, was actually due to the factories and such.. and then you have Magnagora's taint cloud..
That, or it could be equated to a post-apocalyptic US.. delving into atomic power (which is known to mutate things), boom.. atomic cloud.. mutations. yeah.
But due to the gears and such, I like the first comparrision better when I think about it.

Uhm... no, not really.
There's a huge clockwork construction somewhere in avechna's peak (don't recall exactly where) and there's some other clockwork constructions found around the basin. Most date back either to the work of the Elder gods or from the time of the GCE.

Shhh.. I like my Industrial Era view

Something to do with something under the Fulcrux, I think. That's what was mentioned last time this was brought up, anyway. Lots of cogs there.
EDIT: Damn, ninja'd by Kidaen. Hey, I'm lagging due to Bleach downloads!

Clockwork construction in Avechna's Peak? I'll have to go find it. I know that there was some sort of machine the krokani used to hold back the taint - but I think it was also partly magical.
So the Elder Gods made clockwork construtions. Interesting. But I think my question sill stands - why is clockwork the image of Lusternia on the website when, in the actual game, stuff like that is pretty much hidden.
Jairdan2005-08-30 07:20:29
Well, the original concept design of the game hasn't been completed. Maybe they are more important than we currently know?
Yrael2005-08-30 07:27:29
Be interesting; clockwork is always funny stuff. Especially if it'll run without magic. Perhaps we'll see Avechna's Peak become some sort of giant transformer and rape Kethuru after using Avechna to cut loveholes inside?

Mountain Transformer?
Lame! Unless he can turn into three different kinds of truc... mountain.

I should point out that I was always curious as to the technology level of Lusternia. I assume this isn't a strict "Middle Ages" type of environment. After all, they had such things as aether broadcasting, etc. I'm assuming they have flush toilets in the cities, rather than chamber pots, for instance.
After all, everybody who goes to Newton knows about the Great Gizmo, the clockwork portals, etc.
If they ever develop a technology artisan skill in this game, I love for it to combine elements of clockwork stuff with perhaps magical elements, such as crystaline technology or similar elements. While I probably wouldn't want gunpowder, some other elements might be cool.
I'd love to see an engineering skill that was uniquely lusternian.

I always hoped this was the case so that there could be an event someday that was an opposite of the Tainted Fae event that started with asking Maeve if she had some gremlins hiding around the place. But no, it's not an actual engine, unfortunately.
Jitwix2005-08-30 13:49:10
Gah, can't belive I forgot about the Great Gizmo and the portals in Newton. (In my defense I didn't spend a lot of time there.) There's also a room on Ethereal called 'Earthen Gears' if I remember correctly.
Technology in a magic world can be pretty cool if its done right. I know Imperian has engineering, though I haven't spent more than a few hours in that game. Maybe one of the new archetypes are ranged fighters with a choice between longbows, crossbows or primitive firearms.
EDIT: And the wiccans get gremlins to mess up bows and guns so they don't work properly.

Hah! Clockwork must be the new druid skill! Using the conjunction of different numbers on the clock face, a druid can afflict with a variety of debilitating afflictions, depending on what time it is. Plus the mysterious second hand, which has different effects depending on where it is in the cycle, as well as what time the target was born at. And also, there must be a great clock somewhere in the realm, or else how will they know what time it is?
Estarra2005-08-30 19:20:58
Actually that's a rather interesting question. As for the level of "technology", keep in mind that most technology is magic-based so there would be reason for Lusternia to ever evolve into a high industry/high tech society. HOWEVER, if you're talking about magical technology, there's no reason that Lusternia wouldn't develop to spells/devices/etc. that would parallel anything found in a high industry/high tech world. Anyway, if you are talking about the level of "mechanical" knowledge, there are the gnomes and finks building machines to open gates, there are windmills and clocks throughout the land, and there are various other high magic machines here and there (like the machine in the Arysian Isles).
As for the website in particular, I had to look up what I had sent to the web designer to inspire him for the Lusternia site. I had forgotten what I had said and had to laugh as I re-read some of my hare-brained ideas. Anyway, basically I wanted a blend of different "styles" and I was rather pleased with the end result. For kicks, here's part of what I had sent him:

IDEAS FOR WEBSITE THEME
Since Lusternia is unique among the IRE games for its focus on conflict among other planes, I think the design of the webpage should reflect this other planar, or inter-dimensional, theme. By this, I mean magical portals or gateways, somewhat like portals in Stargate. Perhaps opening new pages could mimic the opening of a magical gate. Perhaps the design could look as though it is multi-layered gates on top of each other, for example, the menu bar could appear to be a floating magical portal and clicking the menu items would open new portals in the main frame/window. (By floating, I mean the artistic illusion of floating, not actually a floating window--gods no!)
So as not to look too science fiction-like, I think in general the design should reflect an advanced civilization whose "technology" is based on magic. Perhaps baroque or gothic frames, with thick gold gilt and fancy scrollwork, like an ornate mirror. In any event, by gothic, I do not necessarily mean extremely dark with gargoyles.
If the baroque is too heavyhanded, I'm also rather keen on Celtic designs.
I haven't really given too much thought on art nouveau, but possibly that might also be a good design theme to match with planar travel.
Of course, perhaps ideally the design should be some mixture of gothic, baroque, Celtic and art nouveau to give it a uniquely other-worldly flair.
Some, small slow-moving animated gifs might also give that magical, other planar elegance, like gems encrusted on frames slowly changing color or very occasionally sparkling. I'm no fan of lots of fast flickering gifs, but if its very subtle and occasional, I think that may work well. Again, my preference would be to stay away from flash but am open to the idea.
This may be wishful thinking, but for the background I think it would be neat if it gave the illusion of a darkly-hued, cloudy fractal that slowly -- very slowly! -- swirls, rather like a lava lamp or, ahem, the swirling void of astral plane. Anyway, I *think* this could be achieved by someone adept at creating animated gifs whose borders can seamlessly create patterns.
Again, I don't expect any animation to be fast, annoying or otherwise distracting. Alternatively, if the swirling is too much or unreasonable, perhaps a static grey cloudy background, that occasionally flashes with silver motes. (I have no idea how this would actually look so someone slap me if it's a terrible idea.)

I really hope to one day get my hands on a copy of the original design doc for Lusternia. I think it would be interesting to see what was intended, and how it's changed since then.
It'd be a wonderful read, I'm sure.

That thing is about 100 pages too... it would make many good bedtime stories.

100 pages? =\\ I read the 6th Harry Potter book in about five, maybe six hours. That's like, an ice-breaker.

By pages, they are probably standard sized printer-type pages, not those teeny ones in Harry Potter. Plus, there's no interesting plot to keep you hooked and I can just about guarantee that Estarra has some extravagant words and got extremely verbose with the report.
