Had a little idea for another possible creation
Soul Traps.
This could be an artifact or maybe some sort of expensive artisan item, but I could see it working this way.
* A Gem or some item is created.
* The Gem can be used against someone in combat. The gem could also be set as a trap, hidden on a floor or something. User walks into the room, it takes affect, and it alerts the person.
* The Gem sucks the victim into a prison. They can't see, but they can hear everything in the room. They can't communicate except to the owner of the soul trap.
* Corporeal and ghosts disappear with the soul. Dreamweavers souls get sucked in but their body's remain where they were.
* A soul trap would last either until the user frees them or one lusterian day.
* The wielder of the soul trap can drain mana, ego, endurance, willpower, or power to replace his or her own.
* To prevent abuse, a soul trap could be used only once a lusternian month. Or, perhaps they are only one-use items that have to be set for a particular victim. Such as "Create Soultrap for Yrael", then placing it on the shop floor.
Why do I think this might be a good idea? Well, think about this. Right now, AFAIK, nobody has a good way to do something like a kidnapping or imprisonment raid. IIRC, you can't drag or carry a prone, unconcious or paralyzed body (or can you). The soul trap idea would allow you to do this. Then maybe when the hour's up, put them in a locked room somewhere. Now you could have ransoms or imprisonment for a trial.

You people just want to capture the number one thief in the land, Yrael
Unknown2005-08-30 20:53:22
Just using him as an example. That's all.

I like the idea, nice job.

Reminds me of ghostbusters.

That would be freaking funny as heck!
You could then use your trapped soul in battle, feedign of their health, willpower, mana and so on.. I suggest though that once you drain their health completely or some other stat that the gem breaks and they become free.. but severely weakened.

I was thinking more of the Genie in the bottle, or the bound demons.
Which reminds me of something else. You could choose to free a victim without draining him, but perhaps freeing him would compel the victim to be unable to attack the person who imprisoned him for 1 lusternian month. (I was thinking more you could command the soul you bound, but that wouldn't really be possible, so that would be the next best effect).

A couple weeks ago I made a thread for ideas like this. I only mention it because it had some of my ideas as well.
I like this idea, but judging from the response to my suggestions, people would never go for something that lasted an hour.
I still think it would be really cool to be able to kidnap people or remove them the hostilities for an extended period of time. The only problem I can really see is that this gives someone a full hour during which they have no hope of escape. If it only lasted 7 minutes or so, then you could still put them into a locked room, but they would have some hope of escape.

How about if the person using the gem is killed another could free him? Or the gem would automatically break if the gem forger was killed.
Or--how about if the gem has a value or "health points", and doing a focus spirit (or maybe even focus mind) might allow one to free himself if he has enough power?
Or--how about psionic beings can still engage in combat even if they aren't in a body. Oops, you imprisoned a transcendent telekinetic!

I'd say this would require the captured person to be of low health or mana or some sort of condition like that. It'd be a realy cheep thing to have someone at full everything just walking around and bam, they're fully stuck in some gem of this sort.
And and hour is quite a long time. People hate it enough to be peaced for a couple hours, but at least they can still do other things. This would be an even worse form than being peaced, because you can't do didly. So deffinately make it only last for a shorter time, and make there some way for the trapped person to escape or be freed(someone else gets the gem and breaks it open?).
Other than that...cool.

Hey it worked on Fistandauntilus.

If it lasted only a few minutes (5 - 10 tops), then it wouldn't be bad, particularly if it had a couple of restraints.
1) The target had to be low on health, mana, ego, Power, Willpower, Endurance, -whatever-. Something so it's not just an unstoppable insta-zap for ten minutes.
2) The gem couldn't be taken "across areas." If you used this thing in Stewartsville, the gem had to remain in Stewartsville. This is to prevent someone from being trapped somewhere (Say, a random highway), then pulled into Celest and killed in enemy territory.
If such a thing were made, it should be an item made...possibly requiring several trade skills. A high level jeweler to make the storage gem, a bookbinder to make a scroll that activates the item, and an enchanter to enchant the items so they'll actually work, for example.
It's not something that should come quickly or cheaply, in order to prevent abuses, while still being functional.

Hmm... Anyone played Morrowind?

This sounds too much like a griefing tool unless there is a severe condition on when it will work, as mentioned previously.

Everyone uses me as an example. Gwylifar used me as an example when he was manipulating bladders.

Are there any draining skills already in the game? As I read the frist post I was thinking about something similar. Maybe instead the gem could constanty suck a portion of points (health, mana, or a combo of both) and then after a certain number of rounds, user could use that for himself - unless the victim could shatter the gem in time and regain his strength.
EDIT: I forgot to say this. You come up with some nice ideas, Phred. ::nods::

Somebody's been playing far too much Warcraft III. That's all I have to say, coupled with a resounding,
"DEAR GOD NOOOOO!! NOT THE LEG! NOT THE LEG!"
Unknown2005-08-31 02:50:05
Damn it, now I need to get 16 levels of sorceror or wizard and a lot of supervaluable gems... 1000 gold per Hit Die of the imprisoned creature... that's gonna suck when everyone's such a high level. Oh well, at least there's no experience cost for casting this.
