Just to point this out - traditionally, books were made out of things besides paper.
parch·ment ( P ) Pronunciation Key (pärchmnt)
n.
1. The skin of a sheep or goat prepared as a material on which to write or paint.
2. A written text or drawing on a sheet of this material.
3. Paper made in imitation of this material.
vel·lum ( P ) Pronunciation Key (vlm)
n.
1. A fine parchment made from calfskin, lambskin, or kidskin and used for the pages and binding of books.
2. A work written or printed on this parchment.
3. A heavy off-white fine-quality paper resembling this parchment.
Neither of these require wood - bookbinders, design things that don't use paper, and thus don't require wood! Leather, sheep, and cow are commodities too.

Woodless divine made out of books!

Well, I sent this to Nejii:
QUOTE
a leafy pamphlet of ethereal vellum
Unfurled upon the floor, a pamphlet begs to be read.
Stylized leaves flow about the corners of this pamphlet to curl along the fringes with a verdant sheen. The vellum, carefully cured and treated with a powder wrought of finely crushed moonstones, sparkles in the available light, a small mimicry of the silver misted ethereal forests.
leather 1 greentint 1 moonstone 1

We'll see if it's approved.

Vellum can refer to paper treated in such a way as to look like actual vellum, from what I understand.

Cant you design books that dont use paper... like with silk or cloth..
Shamarah2005-09-08 21:52:45
I thought this topic said "wordless books" at first.

Pages made of silk or cloth aren't going to hold ink well.

Hmm, I was under the impression it didn't last terribly long with medieval inks on cloth.
Unknown2005-09-08 23:39:24
It'll bleed through the pages.

Magic ink
Unknown2005-09-09 00:37:15
Only bookbinders use magic ink.
Let's um.. just stick with wood pages. Leather to an extent, but.. wood.

Wood pages didn't exist for a very long time - before that, various skins were used. Why can't we use skins if we can use wood? I'm trying to look for ways to help out with the wood shortage - I don't see how this is a bad one.
Unknown2005-09-09 00:51:02
Leather's a skin.
I don't see the problem with other skins as pages, but this just covers up the initial issue of there not being enough wood (Unless the Druids begin a harvest plan).
I could scribble a few cloth-page designs for my cartel since you asked though.

Are reeds a commodity? You could make papyrus, if so. But I don't think they are...
