Tailoring Trade skill

Anyone have any info on tailoring. I have the first few abilities but haven't
really used them yet. I am assuming you need a needle and some cloth but
there doesn't seem to be any help files on tailoring. Or none that I could
find. Any pointers, suggestions, information would be appreciated.

No flames or idiots please, if you want to be an idiot go do it in someone
else's thread.

It works the way many tradeskills work, doesn't it? As in, you look up the pattern you want to make, gather the commodities listed in the pattern, go to the tailor's workshop room, and execute the commands given you in the AB lists. Not being an active tailor, I can't give more info than this, but that should be how it works.

Uh... you asked for information on tailoring, it's not like you insulted someone's mother.

That said, you could ask a tailor in-game (I'd suggest Bau or Veonira), and anyone in either the Merchant's Guild or the Fates' Thread has the entire skillset in clanhelp tailoring.

How helpful. I'm sure she meant one of the following:

I'm a trans tailor and...
1. I'd love to help you on the forums.
2. I'd love to help you in game.
3. I'll send you the skills list.
4. I want to join Richter's cartels.
5. I'm available for an in-depth consultation of the nature of tailoring.
6. I'm posting for the sake of posting.
7. I'm so much better than you, because I put 300cr into a skillset.

Yes... one of those...

You'd be surprised at what they do in other forums. Aside from the player-to-player hate we occasionally get, this forum is pretty nice.

Everyone has to remember that the new ads are drawing people to the game forums too. ninja.gif

Edit: Err.. anyway. Hopefully someone with tailoring experience will come around. I'm clueless so all I can say is...

You might want to check AB TAILORING and then TAILORING ALL to see what you can make so far.
Acrune2005-09-09 20:36:07
If you go the the tailoring room, and do whatever command you're supposed to do to craft the clothing item, and it might say something like 'You need a needle to do that'. Just a guess though.

OMGWTFBBQLYSOL. STOP TALKING ABOUT MY MOTHER, RICHTER.

Cloth can be bought at commodity stores in each city. You don't need a needle - they're at the sowing stations in various cities and communes. smile.gif

AB TAILORING will show you what categories of things you've learned to sew.

TAILORING (category) will bring up a list of design sketches

TAILORING (category) (sketch number) will bring up the specified tailoring sketch you want to look at. The sketch shows what the item looks like in your inventory or on a person, what it looks like when dropped on the floor, and what it looks like when examined closely. It also shows what body parts the item covers, and what layer (underwear, normal, overwear) the item goes on. You can't wear two things in the same place, obviously.

The sketch also has a list of comms, or commodities, required for making the item. The *marjority* of these commodities can be purchased in 'comm shops' which are present in each city/commune and each village. You might want to shop around to find the best prices. Dairuchi and Angkrag have the best price for silk, being silk producing villages, Paavik usually has very cheap cloth, etc. Tints are made with skills in the ARTS skillset - you can usually buy them from another player or find them in city/commune shops. Lastly, some items ask for rather odd things, like the snakeskin pants which have 'SNAKE 1' in the commodity list. This means you need to have the corpse of a snake to sew the pants. There is also a shawl that requires a rose - you can purchase these from players with flowergardens (and actually, rosehips (an herb) work too for that design, though that might be a bug).

Once you gather the required materials, you need to go to a tailoring workshop. There is one such workshop in every city and commune - ask your city/commune if you aren't sure where it is or can't find it. Once there, SEW (sketch number) to sew the item.

Remember to keep all commodities in your RIFT (a skill 25 lessons into the PLANAR skillset) when you don't need them, or they will fall from your inventory/backpack/etc when you quit the game or die.

Thanks to all who answered. I got the answer I needed. A couple of things.

Richter said: Uh... you asked for information on tailoring, it's not like you insulted someone's mother.

Yeah I know it was a pretty basic question but as someone pointed out you would be surprised what kind of responses that simple question would have gotten from some forums for other games I have played. Seriously...in one other game I played for about a week, I asked a similar question, merely asking to be directed to the correct help files...my god you would have thought I had murdered someone's mother. So thanks to Richter and all the others for being polite and helping out as much as they could.

It was Shorlen who managed to figure out what it was I actually needed to know since I couldn't word it properly in my question...not knowing myself what I was missing from the help files.

It was TAILORING (category) (sketch number) that I needed to know. Thanks Shorlen for that info.

And finally, I still have a lot to learn in the game. Merchant's guild??? Cartel???
Not a clue what any of those are or how they work. But I will figure it out and if I can't figure it out on my own I know I can come here and ask for help and will ACTUALLY get help, not just smartass comments.

Thanks again all who answered. Anyone out there who has the time/energy/will to do it should think about writing a short but to the point help file on how to use and market your tradeskills. I do know about the market channel but I think most newbies in game will be looking for a store that will take their creations. A how to make and market your tradeskill items post would go over very well I think and would definitely be appreciated by all.

One final time, thanks again.

A cartel is a private clan thingy that gives you more designs for a certain trade (ie. tailoring, forging, etc). The Merchant's Guild is Richter's big collection of cartels (I think he has 3?)
Unknown2005-09-09 21:47:39
Ooooh Richter sounds like the person to know huh. So does he like chocolate? a case of 24 (canadian beer = real beer). Heheheeh...Once I figure stuff out and get comfortable with myself in the game I will contact Richter I believe. The most trouble I am having right now...and the reason I am so quiet in game...is the whole
rp thing. I love rp but have not fully immersed myself yet. And I read a bunch of notes in my clan that were...well just hateful...regarding other cities/communes, and at this point I am still leaving the door open to leave. I want to see how much of that is real and how much is game.

Cartels are how you get designs. Designs are not to be confused with patterns however.

A pattern is something like, shirt, pants, pack.

A design is something like a green shirt, a rugged pair of pants, or a flowery backpack.

Cartels submit designs to be approved by the Charites, an administrator character some or all of the gods have access to, that serves no roleplaying function. The Charites approve our designs, which have been submitted as either public (anyone can use them) or private (you have to be a member of a certain cartel to use them).

Public cartels are owned by your city or commune, each place has one of each. A trademaster is elected and they have quite a few design "slots" for submissions each year (I don't know the specific number). They have no channel.

Private cartels are owned by a person, they are an upgrade from a clan, and cost one million gold total. It has two private slots and one public. Private cartels may have dues, and they can have whomever they want in them, just like a clan. They have their own messageboard and channel.

The Merchant's Guild is an organization I created dedicated too all things merchant-ish. Only people who have transcended their trade (learned all the skills) are allowed in. We have about 40 people, and a 12 or so room tradehall.

Seven, including the Merchant's Guild, which is technically a forging cartel.
Shamarah2005-09-09 21:56:39
Holy crap! When did you buy all those?

A bit ago. I picked them up every once in a while, and bought artisan and bookbinding cartels as soon as the skill came out. Check out CARTELS sometime, the private cartels are arranged in the order they were bought.

It's all ingame. The various cities communes do often hate each other because of idealogical differences and taintedness differences. But the point is everything like that is ingame. We're RP encouraged, you see.

My favourite cartel is Gods-R-Us.
