My response was aimed at Verithrax who seems to think that everyone else has skill in debating and I just have dumb luck. Heh.

It's very demoralising, but due to laetitia balance only being roughly as fast as a merian's eq more than one chanter makes very little difference, and more than two chanters makes absolutely no difference.

Ok, then the issue is purely offensive debating.

I mean, Marsu didn't even wait for me to mis-hit and debate back. Look at how easy it would be for someone to employ -that- tactic.

Actually, I'd say it's more +10%/+2%/-20%. Regardless of if he sips for 5k ego per bromide and sparkles for half that, with under 4k max ego, you should have won that, if wins counted the same for him as losses did for you, which they should.

On some other post about influencing on the forums, one of the gods said that the DRAW debate finish doesn't help or hinder your win/loss, so basically a DRAW counts for nothing towards wining. It's not a partial win, it's not a partial loss, it's nothing. So counting your draws as part of winning is inacurate.

Being the attacker in a debate is far more dangerous and harder to win that it is being a defender. That's why most smart defenders don't bother attacking back. Defenders seem to have an initial advantage over attackers in debating.

Even then, 14 wins vs 9 losses, and the defender having less max ego?

I think the whole system needs an overhaul, but I doubt the gods have time for it yet.

Although in this case it sounds like there was a bug of some kind.

Defence strength goes up, but I don't think attack strength does.

If it does, defence strength is like, +60% per miss, and attack strength is +10% per hit.

This needs to be looked at, if you ask me.

Marsu seems to be the best opponent in debating I've come across.

This time: 7 wins, 12 draws vs 7 losses. Marsu is the same Mugwump as in the previous log.

It just seems to me that offensive debating is near-useless if the person knows what they are doing. Since debating has two-way attacks, the damage from offensive debating should be firmly in the attackers favour. Wins should be far more damaging to the victim than losses are to the attacker. Otherwise you have the situation where those who use influence have almost nothing to fear from debaters unless they try to burn them out. Which is never necessary anyway.

Another log that demonstrates the power of debating. Once again, Shayle did nothing other than sip, I attacked. 6 wins & 3 draws vs 6 losses. At any time she could have walked away.

Though this one is not as conclusive as the previous, it is again indicative of the futile nature of debating. I might try a few debates where I sit and rotate mindsets randomly to get a copy of the reverse experience.

Incidentally, is it just me who finds offensive debating frustrating and pointless?

Nope. I decided offensive debating was poo unless my enemy wasn't paying attention and I could slam them with about 5 wins instantly. Much easier and lazier to do the defensive.

I think it all needs a look over, really. Maybe just fixed where the two debaters auto-clash and changing your mode of attack/defense combinations make it a win or lose (If they're not going to do a complete overhaul). Would make things fair at at least.. and make it a joint effort.

I got pretty annoyed in Delport. Not having a city rank all I could do was debate people I got a few but there was one that just sat there and took it and I lost. And was snooty about winning without actually doing anything.

That was spammy as heck. I couldn't see what was going on so just kept influencing and hoping I didn't get shattered. I had to stop a couple times and manually switch mindsets to make people back off for a moment, but ya. I pretty much shattered or chased off anyone that tried to debate me there. As I said before high charisma + high sip + sparkleberry is easily a match for chanters.

And you can have a look at the zmud debating system I use if you want, but it's very clunky and only works the default line width. I'm not much of a whiz in that regard, unfortunately.



I use the variable baleqtask to store a todo list for when balance and equilibrium come back. You might want to change that to something more appropriate for your own system.

I'm sure someone else has a better system, if you're looking for something useful.
