I just received a message saying my rolepoints were deducted -5 for speaking french on public channels. As far as I am concerned on my character I don't speak french I just speak bits and pieces of lingo used in Delport.
I find it quite odd that I cannot roleplay my character and I am just now being punished for over 25 years of strict adherance that I am from delport and I speak differently than most people.
I have moved away from total lines in which I speak some weird language in game. However saying I speak french does not mean I do IC. What are you going to do when someone starts talking in latin? Punish them for talkin in latin within rituals? That is really farfetched to me at least. We might as well tell me to rename all my shop bins so they don't use culturally inspired names for things even though I put in quotes what is in the bin for people who aren't framiliar with a thing.
Why is it bad roleplaying when I have added more depth to a game and expanded on the basis of Delport. I thought the administration was trying to encourage roleplay here and this is not encouraging in the least bit for me.
Estarra said the people in Delport do not speak a full language it is just a dialect of lingo and participles which I understand and I know I have tried to keep consistent on it. But why bog down my roleplay when I am simply building onto it. Delportese wasn't a word until I started speaking what they were speaking so I think the administration should relook on this subject on using out of game languages mixed in with 'common' english language.
Like I said I make sure people can understand my intent if I say something they don't know. Such as a nod or yes, a wave goodbye and so forth this does not take away from the experience it adds to it. If I put french recipes will I be negated more rolepoints for calling lamb mutton? What about people's warcrys and mottos in foreign languages?
Lastly, I don't speak french I know more italian than french. I use world.altavista.com. Please do not send me tells in full french because I usually don't know what your saying.

This does seem a bit over the top if you acted as you say you did.
Malicia2005-09-13 03:02:26
I admire your rp.. The whole Delportese thing is pretty cool. I'm not sure why you'd be punished for that. Grumpy admin, probably.

Qale has always been delportian.. Why did they choose now to punish him..

Yet French in Delport is fine? It's just like with silly names...
Vesar2005-09-13 03:08:36
No kidding. He's always done it, and I know Estarra mentioned that it was fine (as it exists as a dialect of Delport).
Deducting rolepoints for that is BS.

Another stupid loss of rolepoints. Join the club. There is already quite a list of Aquamancers who've lost rolepoints for dumb reasons.

(Serenwilde): Shriztika says, "Saluti Serenwilde, come siete tutti?"
Whatever the hell that was (she claimed "Delportian") is not acceptable. What Qaletaqa does is.

I think a -5 is meant as a gentle guide, since it doesn't do much except bruse your ego.
Maybe we need a little expansion to the help file about Rolepoints, just so we don't offend.
For instance. Saturday I had a little trouble with taking Pilgrims to Avechna's peak. They changed the code so I had to say the word Avechna. I thought it was a bug, and bugged it, until a Mugwump shouted "Don't just promise to lead me to any ol' peak". I actually thought that was cool. ;-) I then took a few of them to the peak. Because I felt embarrased, I did an OCC via a tell to the Mugwump. Then I got this message.
"Your rolepoints have been altered -5 points for Tully tells a mugwump pilgrim#3410, "OOC Triggers always make me confused sometimes."
Now, I think that was a little unfair, because that was private, and I wasn't gonna Issue or Bug it, but I did want to apologize to the admin who possesed the Mugwump for my stupidity. (Although, for all I know, a seperate admin might have punished me).
I guess the only offensive thing I did was ruin a god's immersion--hey, they need their fun too.
But lesson learned. :-)

Soon everyone will be afraid to talk at all.
Unknown2005-09-13 03:16:36
Do the Delportians actually speak any french?
Unknown2005-09-13 03:16:52
Eh? I can understand them taking points if you use a lot of french, but if you're only using that which is also used in Delport there's no way they can hurt you for it because they are established IC words.

Yes, this is an example of how I do not roleplay my character. I keep to singular phrases and participles and or nouns it isn't like that at all. People should be able to understand what your saying without asking you. I find personal expressions to be fine too.
Would you rather hear sh** or d*** or would you rather like to hear someone say Merde :@ Mon dieu :| etc with emoticons. As long as the emotion is vivid it speaks louder than words could ever do. And this is what I try to deliver when I roleplay. I keep it to a cross-cultural dialect.

I'm afraid to speak on the guild aether sometimes. Everytime I say something weird Lacostian always pops up and comments on it. He scares me..

You greet Beauregard Dubaise with a sincere smile.
Beauregard Dubaise exclaims, "Have you seen moonhart wood? Ooo-la-la, but it is
fine!"
You greet Percy Legrand with a sincere smile.
Percy Legrand says, "It is my duty, monsieur, to watch the animals and buy
healthy ones."
Etc.
Edit: As a sidenote, the French that I learned how to speak from my different classes (though I don't claim to be fluent at -all- in it. ) has pronounced "Ooh-la-la-" as a more "Oh-la-la" sort of deal.
