Only that much from a customer, Brenon? I make 100 gold per piece of clothing. 1k per greatrobes, and 100 per mending of clothing. People mend much more often than they buy new greatrobes.
Sylphas2005-09-17 19:40:13
Unless you forget, have your robes decay, and then have to run around naked because you don't have any money.
Bau2005-09-17 19:50:32
You running around nakey and broke doesn't make me business.
And, well... you don't anyway

What if C/GHELP files were converted into Aetherscrolls? That's been the main RP excuse for them since the beginning, you'd simply have all the GHELP files made by bookbinders as tangible, magical Aetherscrolls to be put in the secretary office, any changes would be made by secs (or higher) picking them up and editing them on a desk, but then people could do GHELP WHATEVER, and something like "A wavering aetherscroll appears in your hands, and disappears as you finish reading." displays. They would have to be taken to a bookbinder and touched up every once in a while, but anyone not a member of the guild/city they belong to would be incapable of reading them anyway.

That's entirely your choice, Bau. You have NO sense of business, if you ask me. I am working to make tailoring profitable and a viable way of making money for people who don't buy tons of credits, in the Serenwilde at least. Trans Tailoring costs about 1.2 million gold. If you refuse to make more than 100 gold per article of clothing, that's 12,000 pieces of clothing you need to sell just to break even. Selling four a day, that's 3,000 OOC days. Right. You're not going to turn a profit that way, and there is NO need to charge so little, except to butcher the trade as a viable way of making money. If that's your goal, that's fine - just pointing out that it's your choice to do so. I make 500-1,500 gold per article of clothing, depending on how expensive it is to make, about 400 gold per backpack, and 4,000 to 16,000 per greatrobes, based on how good the enchanting is. Stuff still sells, and the trade is suddenly profitable, breaking even after only 200 or so OOC days, rather than 3,000.

That's ridiculous. Haven't you ever thought that perhaps I sell hundreds of items of clothing through my shop? I've sold 20 sets of greatrobes in the past day. That's 20k. Some of us have better things to do than stockpile gold, and I tell you now, my clothing for a few hundred up to 1500 gold per sells a LOT.
Those credits weren't all bought in-game, they were occasionally bought out-of-game and a fair few of them were from the free credits at the end of beta. Sure I could charge 1k for tailoring a pair of boxers. But that is just ridiculous. Clothing has competition in both armour AND greatrobes.

I made a -crapload- of money running Moonlace, and I didn't actually have a set profit. I sold all pieces of the same type for the same price. Some things I'd only make 10%, some i'd make 200% on, though I based things on an average of 60-70% profit for the price I charged. Its a nifty tactic, and it made me about 10-20k an irl day without a problem at all... I made well over a million gold in my time as TM.
Bau2005-09-18 09:04:23
I make a lot of gold in between shop robbings and clan buying and all that stuff. I price them all differently because it's always nice to see that some things are worth different amounts. Sure, people will often buy the cheaper ones first, but sometimes they won't, and it all sells sooner or later anyway.
There's no need to be ridiculously greedy with profits. Your strategy sounds fine to me, though Jairdan. but you never heard me say that

I actually did it because I got tired of working out individual prices for each item based on current commodity value So I said screw it, all shirts are the same price!! and, it actually ended up working well, because alot of the cheaper things to make were really popular. That, and I didn't think little things should make such a huge difference on what people had to pay, like, certain comms made some things outrageous if I marked them up, so they wouldn't be bought at all.. but I went into tailoring because I liked the clothing aspect, so, not selling my clothing would defeat the purpose
The thing that sort of surprised me, is that the jester hats that I always carried like NEVER sold Hats don't sell much in general though.. the black berrets don't do too badly though.. gloves don't sell much either. At least they didn't.

I don't bother with hats. Occasionally I'll throw in a few aprons and a chef's hat or two. Some gloves or maybe a shawl. But normally I just keep to the everyday clothing, a few formal things and the cloaks/coats/packs.

so... anyone actually interested in the original topic?
i'm apparently too stupid to bring anything to lusternia so perhaps this entire thread should be deleted

Calm down, dear, the is pretty normal. It's not a slight against you.
I like having the GHELP/CHELPs. Aetolia is hell without them.
Libraries/books are good for especially long files, such as the five GHELPS I presently have on the Tongue oF Crow.

Witch's hats seem to sell for me, suprisingly.
Regarding the original topic, when Libraries are introduced, many files from GHELP and CHELP will certainly be moved there. Over half the Moondancer GHELPs can be, I know. However, the fact remains that you can't readily access those books, so rules should still be in G/CHELP, as well as things novices need, and affliction/curing scrolls.
Right now, it is impractical for someone to carry around a personal library of copies of every single scroll/book they need - that's silly, if you're going to ask people to carry all those around with them, why not keep them as G/CHELPs? It makes more money for Bookbinders, but at the cost of being obtrusively annoying, having one's inventory/backpack/manse full of books. Also, books cannot be referenced by title - you'd have to page through every single one in order to find the one you're looking for.

*motions to an earlier suggestion*
i wasn't suggesting that you would be carrying around loads of books, but that one or two book with what you need for your current ranking within commune/city and guild.hi
With the library file now up perhaps there could be a new requirement be you pay for a personal copy. *Shrugs*
