Names

The point was, however, that normal names are disallowed.

Name: Vincint
Guide: Too much like final fantasy!

Name: Matemeo
Guide: Too close to Redwall!

Name: Robhert
Guide: Too much like the Author of the Wheel of Time!

Name: Davide
Guide: Too much like the statue!

Those kind of responses. Normal names, that could have any number of objections applied to them, because they're so widely used.

Bau was the High Priestess of Chailidocean, the capital city of the civilization of Atlantis in a series called the Dark Age trilogy (more specifically, from the book An Echo in Time, book two in the series). Bau also being the incarnation of the soul mate of Marduk, one of the Nefilim who created and once ruled humanity.

But given that Traci Harding is an Australian author, few Australians I know have ever heard of her AND read past the first book, let alone Americans, so I'm pretty safe with it. wink.gif

book stuff

Heh. I'm American... and I have a favorite Australian author! Hell, she's one of my favorites period, too. I'm head-over-heels in love with The Wayfarer Redemption series, and only recently got my hands on fourth book. Of course, she's the only Australian author I've read, being from America... which could have something to do with that.

Sara Douglass is also, to this day, one of the only authors that has ever made me cry rivers. She's just so good at making characters you can connect with and love, and then she goes and rips your heart to shreds with what she does to them in the plot. I can remember crying for three hours at the end of the second book, and crying a lot at various points of the third book, including the end. It makes me sad just remembering. crying.gif

Anyway, I wub.gif Sara Douglass!

Note to self: create a character named after someone from the books later and see if it's caught. ninja.gif

See.. Now everyone doesn't know about all these books. Anisu got in a tizzy over Rinswind earlier and I had never heard of it.

Nikua already did that with the Gladheon family.

Try Traci Harding if you can get hold of her.

And also, read the new Sara Douglass quartet, the Troy Game. Only the first three are out yet, though. dry.gif Still waiting for the fourth, which will be a while yet as the third only came out late last year or early this year.

If they going to steal a name from a good book they shouldn't mutilate it. It's Rinsewind, the mage that lives on a disk, that rests on the back of 4 elephants, that stand on a turtles back, that is swimming trough space.

It's spelled with a C, not an S mellow.gif

Hurrah for Rincewind, the man so strange that even Death can't figure out his hourglass.

Oh man, Rincewind...*has the urge to make a character named "Theluggage"*

Roark2005-09-17 17:43:47
Try not drive people away by being too much of a name snob. For example, except for books like Harry Potter or Tolkien now with the movie popularity, most people have not read your favourite novel and may not take special notice of names like Jerle, Flick, or Brona. (Heck, "Roark" is from a book, though probably nearly no one will make the connection.) The same goes for words from foreign languages (meaning non-English). Names that are obviously intended to be stupid like Qqqqqqqqq, Sjdfsakda, Snugglybunnydudez, or Faelinghater, then yeah, screw those. The same goes for obviously pop-culture names like Frodo, Hitler, or Christ. But if you have to think even for a moment if it is appropriate then probably the worst you should do is explain to them what the issue is an just encourage them to change their name.
Unknown2005-09-17 17:52:07
Heh, The Fountainhead was on TV a few nights ago. It was a really wierd experience hearing 'Roark' every few minutes.
Trasse2005-09-17 20:36:24
Haha, whenever I hear Roark I think about that old show Fantasy Island...

Gladheon isn't from the Wayfarer Redemption. blink.gif Not even the same author. huh.gif

But I have read the books it's from. Karigan Gladheon was the heroine from Green Rider and First Rider's Call by Kristen Britain. Good couple of books... I really need to find the first one and reread it again. Can't wait to see if she writes more. Karigan's adventures can't be over YET... she still has to kick the evil bad guy's arse instead of messing with time! ohmy.gif

I've seen the first two books of the Troy Game at my bookstore, actually. Debated getting it, not really sure, but they sound interesting. I'm not positive but I could probably look into finding some Traci Harding there, or even going elsewhere if that fails.

I think I read too much period. Just recently finished a trilogy called the Hythrun Chronicles by Jennifer Fallon that was pretty awesome. The lead character, R'shiel, is one of the best anti-heros EVAR. Even though her birth was arranged for the express purpose of being the weapon to kill a god, it's interesting to see how she fights her destiny (and the machinations of the gods) and how it all changes her. It's also fun to see how she tips the balance of the pantheon in the process! wub.gif

I should stop blathering now... talk about a hijack. ninja.gif

I think I read some Traci Harding not long ago....did she write, what was it, "Ancient future" or something like that?
Bau2005-09-18 08:22:28
The Ancient Future Trilogy - The Ancient Future: the Dark Age, An Echo in Time, Masters of Reality. And also the Celestial Triad, the names of which I can't recall right now except the Cosmic Logos (I think).
Alger2005-09-18 11:44:54
this one made me laugh

(Grunts): Wiseguy says, "IM DONE READING."
Bau2005-09-18 11:51:16
You mean you missed him kicking the beggar and dying, and then trying to kick Ethelon and punch Shaylen?
