I thought there'd already be a thread up on libraries!
Well, I know it can be confusing, so post questions here if anything isn't clear.
Comments welcome too!

Estarra. Run away with me.

Are the Elder war histories going to go into the libraries automatically?

I posted it in the envoy thread, even though it isn't really an envoy change.
My comment there... are we not supposed to advance novices any more? If they're worth more if they don't graduate...
Xavius2005-09-19 00:26:56
Is critiquing only to be used for the big, ugly things like layout and OOC writing, or could it also be applied to the IC validity or consistency of the work itself?

2) Cultural Activity--This score is calculated by the aggregate of the
novice and member scores of guilds within a particular commune or city.
Novice scores count for TWICE the weight of member scores. This should
underscore the importance of recruiting novices and making them feel
welcome within cities and communes. Guild Administers, Secretaries and
Undersecretaries should take note, as well as Ambassadors.

Does this mean we shouldn't advance novices any more?

Oh, hrm, well the way it's set up is that the first library to archive it and publish it will actually get credit for publishing it.
Unknown2005-09-19 00:31:32
Oh, and do we really need a librarian position? I figure the Culture Minister and his/her aides could handle things. They do very little as it is, and it would make perfect sense. The Ministry of Culture has no influence on the culture score... eh.
Unknown2005-09-19 00:34:17
I'm kinda with Guido, maybe, though the cities/communes would need to look at the suitability of their current Ministers.

Guilds never were "supposed to advance" one way or the other. It's completely up to their RP.
If I were in charge of a guild, I'd still want to advance (i.e., reward) novices who go over and beyond the call of duty. But there's incentive for me not to frivolously advance novices.
Likewise, even though holding a novice back might increase my culture score, I would realize that this would more likely drive my novice to a competing guild rather than inspiring him or her to happily remain a novice forever in my guild.
So, bottom line, it's up to guilds.

Normally I would say this one reason this is so good is because it allows organizations with less good fighters to still remain on par with or even surpass more combat-oriented cities.
But Magnagora has the best writers, too. So HAH!
(Kidding, of course. I think the communes have good writers too. Celest, however, is illiterate)

It's almost amusing in a sad way how terrible the grammar and spelling is in the Library related helpfiles.
Shamarah2005-09-19 01:21:12
One question about criticising - the help file seems to say that it is mostly just for bad grammar and OOC. Does this mean we can't criticise for simply bad or inaccurate content? Because that seems like it'd be the most important part - I can't imagine many books with atrocious grammar/spelling will make it past the Librarian, so critiquing based on content would seem to be the best way to damage another library and hurt the book in general... right? Can we do this?

The files contradict one another. Read the HELP LIBRARIAN scroll, it says that critiquing is based on the work's content more than anything.

Whats "inaccurate content?"
Everyone has their own view of the world. A city/commune exists partly because the people in it share a similiar world view. Why shouldn't Magnagora write up their own achievements with a positive slant on the Taint? Why shouldn't Glomdoring write up their own existance sans any influence on the Taint? etc.
Shamarah2005-09-19 01:33:59
Saying something that's completely untrue or based on false premises. Like that Balach is a desert, as a random example.

And to reply to myself, any Divine Sanctioning of the "True content" of an event that took place may lend credence to that city/communes path being the "Right" history. I'd hate for that to suddenly happen.
Xavius2005-09-19 01:35:11
But most things are common to all organizations. The Elder Gods, biodiversity in the Basin, structure of the planes, and the like. If it's a work of fiction, there can be stories that are simply bad. Shallow plot, unresolved plot, flat characters, using Guido and Annabelle in anything except slapstick comedy, things like that.
