It will probably take some time to streighten everything out, like celest's library has a 100gp checkout fee, which most likely won't work (no, really?). And of course there will always be people complaining the system isn't good enough, a lot of things were concidered but we were severely restricted in that we had to base our library system on the Achaea book code.
And to those who complain: If you don't like it, go play something else.
I suppose there will always be people of the variety where if you give them a porsche, they'll claim to have wanted a Lotus instead.

Someone in one of the guilds handed my novice a book about stuff. I kinda looked at the screen funny for a bit, put it in my pack and consequently forgot about it. (Sorry.)
GHELP/CHELPs are kinda like the IC equivalent of the Internet - everything's at the tip of your fingers (though you'll find a lot less irrelevant stuff in the HELPs )
I still use the library, but I infinitely prefer the internet.

For once, I agree with Bau Books/libraries are lovely and wonderful and awesome, but G/CHELP scrolls are SO much easier and less cumbersome to use.
To read a bit of information from a G/CHELP:
GHELP INDEX to find the scroll's title.
GHELP TITLE to read the scroll.
To read a bit of information from a book in the library:
Go to the library.
Find the book in the catalog.
Check out the book.
Find the book's number in your inventory.
Read that specific book.
Find yo've read the wrong book.
Try another book.
Go through the table of contents.
Find the page number of the information you're looking for.
Read that page.
Return the book.
If this is what people think we should ask our novices to go through to find out the initial skills they should learn, that's silly. That belongs in a GHELP. If this is what people thinkg we should go through to find out what cures an affliction we are dying of, that's silly. That belongs in a GHELP.
Now, a treatsie on the ways New Celest has created the illusion of the Taint to justify the collapse of the Celestian Empire and shift the blame from themselves, written by a Glomdorian scholar - that does NOT belong in anyone's G/CHELP scrolls. That beongs in a library.
Some things belong in libraries, some things do not, if you ask me.
G/CHELPs should never be removed - they serve a purpose.

Shorlen agrees with me?! Not only has Nil frozen over, the Cowboys have won the grand finals!

Hey, cool. Perhaps Lusternia can now break out some philosophers!

I haven't read this thread past this point... But this was seriously insulting to me... How is it that there being libraries now means theres going to be more philosophers? There have been philosophers in Lusternia for ages, there just aren't a lot of them.
EDIT: And now that I've finished reading the thread, I must say that I think G/C Help files should be restricted to important information, as well as lists of book titles which hold relevant information. the Help scrolls have always been severely OOC in most ways, how can a person wave a hand or close ones eyes and suddenly see a huge scroll with all kinds of info... Having certain important things is a neccissary (misspelled I know) evil, but its acctually very easy to set up a book with a proper table of contents, and index, and have it cover any and all information that help scrolls would. Further, it would be purely IC, which as far as I'm concerned is a HUGE thing, and I libraries.
Even though it pretty much hurts me as a rogue because I know eventually someone is going to publish stuff that I've had written... Or it will be incredibly difficult for rogue writers to get their philosophies published because of their likely antithema belief structure tward the various societys. There needs to be a central library of some kind for completely nonbiased works, or for Rogue works who do not wish to further any of the various societys. I think such a thing would fit perfectly into the world and would further the RP.
Acrune2005-09-20 14:26:10
I thought about how it would be if the help files were in the library, but I decided that I'm willing to sacrifice a little rp considering the huge inconvenience it would be if I had to run to the library every time I wanted to look something up. Plus, a lot of help files contain ooc information, which wouldn't be good in an IC library.

What's wrong with a 100gp checkout fee?
Bau2005-09-20 15:16:13
Aether scrolls.
Shall we move help files to libraries too? All the HELP scrolls, and the HELP scrolls, and while we're at it, let's just ASSUME they're OOC because you can't see them.
We DID explain it reasonably in IC terms a while back on the boards.

Ya, i thought about confusing it would be if the helpfile on libraries was a book, in a library... I don't think they will ever get rid of chelp's and ghelp's for certain things are best left in that format, as certain things are best in projects as well. Where as a lot of IC information would be really nice in books, and we have them YA!!!!
Tsuki2005-09-20 15:37:59
100 gp is two pixies ... we just need to be able to adjust the length of the checkout period to where we want it
Unknown2005-09-20 16:43:35
My apologies, the fee was 1000 when I last checked it, not 100.
At least, I think it was...

Was gonna say, "damn, that's cheap".
It's probably 1000, as Magnagora's is.

Unknown2005-09-20 20:14:43
And you expect people to takeout books at that price?
Ialie2005-09-20 20:15:41
Only cost 100 gold in Serenwilde. They are books that are going to be returned. No need to put such a high price on them.
Nokraenom2005-09-20 21:09:04
It's actually 100 gold in Magnagora. I made a slight typo in my post.
Ialie2005-09-20 21:14:02
Wow all three of us agreed on something! Woot for cheap education!
Unknown2005-09-20 23:09:31
Heh good good, the fee should be nominal. 100 works, 1000 sucks poop.

I'm afraid you will have to come to Magnagora for that.
Niara2005-09-21 13:04:59
After having a look at CULTURE I noticed that no scholars went to Magnagora so far. Your city must be very scary or expensive or your library is hiding or they got the wrong directions. I mean even a few found their way to Glomdoring and that is quite a feat.
Bau2005-09-21 13:12:16
Yeah... I still have to flow/teleport nexus when I go wandering in that forest. *shifty*
