Since it was swamped in the other Rants! thread made by Shiro, I decided to make a poll here. Recently, we've had situations where people would take dropped equipment from their enemies and not return them. Should we have mutual respect towards one another and return lost items/equipment or be ruthless barbarians and smite our enemies to the ground?
I said mutual respect because there is already plenty of hatred even without people stealing from each other. Victims also get frustrated and cranky. (See Ixion's log on the Rants! thread made by Shiro.)

Mutual respect. I'm not sure why anyone would vote for the other. The problem is deciding where to draw the line.

It really depends on whether you treat this is a game to roleplay in or as another world.
By that I mean, are you willing to overlook parts of your role so that you don't piss others off too much, or will you stick to your chosen character as totally as possibe.
I'm on the fence on this one.

All the items I've found I have returned, though I've been tempted to do otherwise Isn't this world all about screwing each other over in order to be the most powerful anyway? Vestiphobia was just always one of those skills I've never understood.
Stangmar2005-09-26 02:44:13
reminds me of the time a long long time ago where i trapped Ordos and phantomed him in hopes of him getting vestiphobia so that i could take all his clothing. Instead he just died and i ended up getting jumped.

I'm all for do as do does. If they've been known to return items, or never had the chance. Feel free, here's your stuff back. If they've been known to destroy items, heck, I'd probably go target them specifically and give them a taste of their own medicine.

I can understand hating your enemies, but knowing how much effort is required for something like weapons and destroying/permanently removing them from their owners is harsh.
If you must, mail it back anonymously.
RP is all well and good, but unless we have soulless players, you really shouldn't approve of that.

Bau2005-09-26 02:51:15
Even if they've done it before, where does it end if you do it in return? Sure, if you've tried it once and they've said a big you, feel free to go soulless on them.
But otherwise... meh.
But otherwise... meh.

I find it's better to mail back gold, even. I think I mailed Murphy back 10k, and Chade back 30k, when they were thick and dropped them somehow. (Or someone sneakily pooka'd it out, but I doubt that.) It's not like it has to be OOC, either. I remember Gwylifar teaching Nejii a bit about why battlefield honour exists and so on a while back (even if he thinks it's still mostly an excuse to complain about being teamed), so it's not like you can't find IC justification not to be an asshole and rob people of their OOC effort.
Ixion2005-09-26 07:18:29
I voted for angel.
A few thousand or even a hundred thousand gold is -nothing- compared to forgings that take hours upon hours to make. Shiro said it well that many forgers put part of their soul into the forging, only to see some griefer steal it. Needless to say that's retarded.
You can still hate your enemies and piss them off while doing it with some class. e.g. Ixion steals scholars from people because it's part of his job to get more power for Magnagora. However, the stark difference lies in that he always reimburses the person for them, so that the person hasn't just wasted their time for nothing.

You can give back weapon and do it with good RP, like when i lost my sword to Alger. He sad that i will get it back if we will duel. So we did. I get back sword and he did get some exp for killing me, heh.

What if I'm playing a cleptomaniac, what's my excuse for giving up my addiction?

That kick in the head aimed your way.

I've always returned anything I found.. except that one time when we found 200k on Celestia after the Mags died.. -that- gold I kept to build up our shrines again that were defiled. Only fair if you ask me.

LoL.
No seriously, I understand keeping the items suck, but to devalue someone's role because they keep an item is a little wron. If anything, they just play their role better than you do and will not come up with silly excuses, even if it does mean it makes the diddums' cry (not you specifically, Bau, just you in the general sense of the word).

I sort of agree with that. If I lose my swords in battle, ask the guy to return them, he laughs at me and sells/smelts them, I'm not going to be very forgiving should the same thing happen to him. It's human nature.
If someone constantly screws you over, you'd turn the other cheek? Be realistic. I'm not talking about Lusternia but period. If I'm getting screwed over, I'll get angry. I'm not going to be like, 'Aww, that's okay. Here, let me cook you dinner, even though you spit in my face earlier.'
I voted for a mutual thingy though. In game, it'd be nice to know that no matter what, if anyone loses a weapon in battle, no matter what situation or how angry we/you are, items will be returned. Returning gold is pretty much up to the individual. Losing gold could have been avoided, for the most part. Hard to prevent dropping weapons.
Unknown2005-09-26 13:12:24
I Voted Mutual. I believe even amongst enemies there can be some kind of respect. Also if someone has spent hours upon hours making something, it is just wrong for some greiving asshole to come along and destroy it.

I ever tell you how much I You? *laugh* Best attitude ever in my opinion. Long as you're honourable, I don't care WHO my character is. I'll do my best to return stuff.
You're a dick? Say byebye to your toys, they're mine now. *shrug* YOU make the choices on what happens to your stuff with what YOU do. Don't wanna be screwed? Keep them pants on and give back the toys *sparkle*
Singollo2005-09-26 14:56:32
Can't I be demon with mutual respect?
Shamarah2005-09-26 20:37:50
It depends.
If, say... Veonira dropped her great robes, I'd return them without a second thought.
But if Yrael dropped his great robes and asked for them back, I'd laugh in his face.
But there's also a sort of middle ground. I picked up one of Shiro's flails the other day on Celestia, and (unnamed person) got the other. (unnamed person) decided to drop it in the Pool and destroy it. I decided, instead, to make Shiro an offer regarding the return of his flail. He refused. Not entirely sure what I'm going to do with it now...
