Better off getting a PS3, really. Not that I'll be able to for a while.

PS3's production costs are higher than the XBOX though, but it might add to the system's life. Microsoft is being SMART and marketing to the Japanese this time around so it may have some interesting games in the future, but I still stand by my claims that it's a waste to buy until January or so.  ninja.gif

From what I read, the Japanese market has not been into Xbox at all, so it looks like Sony may still win out when it comes to Japanese games.

On another note, I just borrowed Morrowind for Xbox and I can't even seem to engage myself to get past the initial player setup. I am enjoying this MUD more right now. I'll still give Morrowind a go at some point but still lots to do on Lusternia. :-)

QUOTE(Aleathiel @ Nov 15 2005, 11:53 PM)
"I can see you're not a serious gamer." What the HECK is that supposed to mean? Is that some sort of not-so-veiled insult? What do I need to do to "qualify" to be a so-called "serious gamer"?? Play video games 10 hours a day until my fingers bleed?

No, not an insult. As a mod, the gods really don't like when I insult people, it kind of takes away from the point of the position. I was just saying that because of your (what I perceived to be) outrageous statements, I determined that you were perhaps not a "serious gamer", one that is informed about the industry, and can make posts and give opinions that actually have some basis in fact. Sure you can say the kinds of things you said, I could also say "Video games make kids kill people" or "the dreamcast was a success", but I'd still be incorrect. I consider myself a serious gamer, even though sometimes my consoles don't get played for a few days.

Honey, I've been playing video games since...oh gee, 1980. I remember playing the original Bard's Tale on an 8088 computer. (I'm 35 BTW.) I still OWN my Sega Genesis, it works, and I still play it on occasion since it's fun.

So, since you were playing video games since before I was born (I'm 20 now), you should understand the leaps and bounds that the industry has made, and the costs associated with such things. Remember how we could get tape players at $20, and Ipods released at $300? I don't have to give you a history lesson hopefully, because you were around then. I suppose one just has to understand the market for games.

There is such a vast array of video games that I can play at any time in any particular format. PC games, console games, Xbox, Playstation, games on my cellphone for pete's sake.

Yes.

Just because I don't want to dole out $400 freakin' dollars for an XBOX doesn't mean I am NOT A "SERIOUS" GAMER. What that means is I have PLENTY of game-play left in the platforms I already have. (Including Xbox, PC, handheld devices, and oh yeah, my Sega Genesis.)

You not spending money for a new Xbox didn't make you such in my mind, it was the uninformed statements. And sure, you have plenty of things left to play, I still play my NES, super NES, N64, etc. It doesn't change the fact that I'm always looking towards the future as well.

You'd think by posting my concerns over the 360, which has yet to be actually out in use, I am some sort of video game traitor. Yeesh. All I'm saying is, I want to wait and see what sort of bugs this thing has and wait for the price to come down.

Don't take it completely the wrong way, I'm not saying you're a traitor or an idiot, I'm just saying your previous points were just silly. I can go back and look at them again, but I thought they weren't very well informed.

Besides, one of my best friends and gaming buddy is buying it, so I'll just go over and play it his place. As for being all sad and jealous that I won't have one??? Ummm no.

Sweet, go play at his house. If you can get use out of it, you don't really need to buy one. It's not like I work for Microsoft, and I'm saying you need to get one.

Oh boo hoo, sure I'm going to be crying when I get home and don't have a 360 here....ummm....NOT....because hell, I still have to get past the newbie level in Lusternia for one thing. I have other games to play! Lusternia and Lusternia alone could take up all of my free time. Really.

I'm really not sure what you're trying to say. Where did I say you were going to be sorry for not getting one?

BUT I JUST THOUGHT OF SOMETHING!! OH NO!!! OHMYGOD...THERE AREN'T ANY "COOL" GRAPHICS ON LUSTERNIA!!! I GUESS THAT MEANS I AM NOT A "SERIOUS" GAMER!!! WAAAAHHH!!!

Now you're being childish. I said I figured you weren't a serious gamer because the points you were making in your post were retarded. Do you -realize- that by insinuating I said you weren't a gamer because you play Lusternia is ludicrous? I've been playing since before it opened to the public boyo. So, talking to a serious Lusternia player, what does "AREN'T ANY "COOL" GRAPHICS ON LUSTERNIA!!! I GUESS THAT MEANS I AM NOT A "SERIOUS" GAMER!!! WAAAAHHH!!!" mean?

Excuse me for being so freakin' sarcastic, but c'mon. We're talking MICROSOFT here. These are the people that built in a damn exploding cable into the original Xbox, OK? (Yes, I was one of theose who had to go and order my new powerplug from them...)

*gasp* Cord problems? Did you know the slim PS2 just had a cord recall because it causes fires? I had to go replace my cord! And to think, Sony has been making PS2's for years now, shouldn't they have been able to forsee this? OMG! PS3 is going to suck! ...that's following -your- logic, of course. Excuse me for being so freakin' sarcastic, but c'mon. We're talking about SONY here. These are the people that built in a damn cord that catches fire and could make your house burn down, OK? Get informed, sheesh. That's why I said you don't appear to be a serious gamer, because that's like saying company A's products suck because of this thing, but company B is wonderful, even though the same thing happened, you just didn't know about it or overlooked it.

I'll believe the hype when I see it. But don't insult me just because I'm not all gaga-eyed and I have better things to do than stand in line at midnight or drop $400 on yet another console system, when I have PLENTY of games I'm playing already and already don't have time to finish.

Cool, sweet for you. I'm just saying don't bash it until you try it. Did everyone believe the hype around PS2? Nope. Did it rock? Yep. Could it pull a Dreamcast? Maybe, but not likely.

I had more time for these things when I was in college. Now I am in the real world, busting my ass to make a living and I've got only so much time in my day to play. That's the breaks, I suppose. But don't harsh on me because of it. It's not necessarily a badge of honor to be playing video games all the time anyway!

I work 8-12 hours a day, with a commute. Don't pull an "I'm an adult" on me, because I'm not a snot-nosed 14 year-old gamer that doesn't have a brain.

So I would prefer if we keep to the subject - Xbox 360 vs. Lusternia - and not get all personal and judgmental on people for having an opinion on the consoles.

Uninformed opinions, but so be it.

PS. Quite a few people are ticked off at Microsoft already since the list of "backwards compatible" games is missing some very important titles while including some schlock like Barbie's playhouse or some such nonsense. Like I said, I am waiting until this thing comes out and the bugs are worked through before spending a dime on it.

Man, I'm soooo pissed at Nintendo for not making my N64 backwards compatible with Super NES.

In closing, I'm willing to pay for a new Xbox. Honors me sometime, I have some disposeable income. I'm not trying to flame you or anything, but some of the things you've said (most recently, the cord issue) are just uninformed. It's like saying "Celestians suck because they raid Magnagora" when Magnagorans do the exact same thing. Not only do they do the same thing, there are more factors than just the basic one to consider sometimes.

I'm willing to buy an Xbox because I think it will be fun, plain and simple. If you don't want to get one, no one's going to think badly of you. wacko.gif

Re: "uninformed statements." I CLEARLY stated at the beginning of my post that I had a bad "gut" feeling about the Xbox. My statements were not facts, but *concerns* I had over possible bugs or problems the system might have. I said I just wanted to wait and see what happened when the dust settled on it.

In response, you are chiding me for being "uninformed" and making "outrageous claims." There's nothing uninformed about having a *concern* such as...will the detachable hard drive prove to be stable or end up causing other problems? Will the software mods required to make old games backwards compatible crash the system? Will the wireless controllers work just as fast and reliably as wired ones?

These are legitimate concerns...and after all (exploding power cords on both sides of the table notwithstanding) the fact is, it is Microsoft and Microsoft alone that puts out buggy PC operating systems with major security holes that need to be patched and updated on a regular basis...

The 360 is a new system...and as consoles get more computer-like and more complicated, the more likelihood there will be for system crashes and other problems.

Having played video games for a quarter of a century now (YIKES!!!! This is making me feel wayyy old!!) I can absolutely wait a few months or even longer before upgrading my system. Call me an old fart if you will. I just don't get all geeked up on every new toy anymore.

The only thing that's going to truly get me super geeked at this point will be full on virtual reality....I am sure it will happen in my lifetime so when that hits, you'll bet I'll be there.

Otherwise...more first person shooters with more "movie-like" graphics are curiosities, but not the sort of thing that will make me want to plunk down $400.

I already did that credit card thing in my 20s and now in my mid-30s I am dearly paying for my past credit card excess. When I buy something, I pay with cash on hand now. It needs to be really worth it! doh.gif

I am so liking this free MUD thing. Great for debt repair. :-)

Honestly, I haven't really been paying attention to the particulars of the 360. Mostly, I just can't get myself to feel that it'll be as good as the hype it has now. It's too early for it to have what I believe is called INNOVATION. Granted, several of the games look pretty sharp and flashy, but almost everything is the same as it was on the XBOX. Gamplay is almost completely unaltered, and it's being released too early from a practical standpoint. It's the first time a console has outpaced the games it plays; almost every other console preceding it has been created because the games are too advanced for it. Now, the games are going to have to stretch to fill that gap so they'll look good when people review any specs they have. For instance, one game--HUXLEY, an MMOFPS (Massive Multiplayer Online First-Person Shooter, for those of you who don't know)-- is a game that acts as a big repetition of an old concept. The only reason it's any better than an XBOX game is because there can be up to 5000 players in a single fight (unless I misunderstood what they said at a tech demo for it) plus a good number of AI creatures as well. Granted, that on it's own is impressive, but it's still just a "bigger is better" approach to a game concept that's been around since DOOM: if it moves, kill it. If it gives you something, kill it faster and take whatever it has. Even though there are a few twists to it, it's pretty much been done before. I can't really comment on any of the other games the system has, because quite honestly I haven't bothered to remember much, only that they each seem to take elelments from existing games. Any other games that seem to be unique--like Peter Jackson's King Kong, for instance--will be available on any other system as well. Even if that game doesn't appeal to you, you have to admit it's at least a little fresh.
Compared to the things I've seen on the PS3, heard about the PS3, and instinctively like about the PS3's potential, the 360 just doesn't seem any good (well, ok, maybe a little good). Though several thousand (possibly millions) of people may disagree with me, I'm going to go ahead and say that Killzone 2 for PS3 will make Halo 3 look like the remains of someone decimated by a Warthog. In fact, all the games I've seen for the PS3 (with the exception of a few underachievers) have ingame graphics that look as though they're fully rendered CG movies (hopefully, Sony hasn't been altering the images.) Also, from what I've gathered, many of the games have unique features to them that have rarely been tapped into. They haven't been templated; everything looks fresh, improved, or reformed to resemble something more original. Another bonus the PS3 might have (or already does; I haven't been following this for a while) is that Ubisoft--one of the best game developers I know of-- are rumoured to have agreed to work exclusively for Sony now. I'm not sure if this is going to happen (or already has, I've been in the dark for a while) but if it does, the 360 will have a definate lack of possibilities. Ubi is also one of the few developers who won't mess up a series. Remember when Atari got it's hands on Driv3r? That was a bad day. Or when EA Games got a hold of the Command and Conquer series? (Maybe you don't care about that series, but I did) It was another bad day. A large number of developers for Microsoft, or those that span across all platforms, produce a lot of filler--shallow games with hype before their release.
If you try to tell me that "Oh, well, at least the 360's sleeker and smaller than the XBOX, and looks better," you're wrong. The box might be sleeker, but now you need more room for the external power supply box. It also didn't get any smaller: it has the same footprint size as the XBOX. Only now, it doesn't look like something made out of black lego. The power brick has filled that role.
And (almost) finally, does anyone else realize that in terms of raw processing power, the PS3 can out-do the 360 anyway with it's 16 Cell Precessors? The total computing power it has is about 25.6 Teraflops per second. From this, they can get 120 frames per second (a good framerate by today's standards is 60fps). Essentially, our current games are powerpoint presentations in comparison.
And now, in summary: PS3 looks like it'll be better than the 360, Microsoft has been way to early in releasing this thing with hype that has some people going nuts, and though both of these systems seem to have plenty of eye-candy, Lusternia is still better and more advanced for originality. So there. That's what I have to say.

PS If you reply to this with a whole lot of criticism and expect a reply from me about this, and I don't seem to have a response, it's probably because I forgot I posted this. Also, don't blame me if the information I've researched so far is inaccurate, because what I'm getting this stuff from is entirely non-biased and I didn't know about any contradictions to what I've restated here.

Shorter paragraphs, pleeeease? That makes my eyes hurt...

And yeah, I don't even own a credit card. I figure that if I don't have the cash for it, I don't deserve it. This, of course, doesn't apply to large purchases like a car or house, and I might get a credit card just to get credit established, but my Xbox is already paid off right now.

And four more days!
Richter2005-11-21 19:54:22
*squeal* 12 more hours!

Who's with me? Anyone up for Lusternian PD: 0 games?
