Hello, all. Being new to Lusternia, I'd be highly interested if I could find out what kinds of slang, colloquialisms, etc. are common and/or acceptable in this amazing world. Is there an overall standard of speech common to all locales and races? Does it depend on locale or race? Or is it primarily an individual thing? Thanks! (Oh, and on a side note...should I be staying IC in this forum?)
Thaemorn2005-10-09 19:13:04
First up - forums are totally OOC
The standard of speech is generally pretty high, as in - no abbreviations, or on channels, omg's and wtf's, u's instead of you's.
What people do in TELLS is individual business, but the above-mentioned stuff is heavily discouraged in any public communication.
As for specific slangs and terms.. I can't actually think of any, but I'm sure there are.
Glad you're enjoying Lusternia so far, and welcome.

Forums are ooc, game is all ic. Slang is usually fine (I hear aussie slang from time to time) but remember not all of us will get it, as we're from around the world.
And please, please, do not use internet slang or abbv.

Got it. So I can pretty much talk the same way I do in real life...so long as I don't mention any RL stuff. Right?
EDIT: Nice sig, Richter. I gotta remember that.

When I was talking about smilie's on channels, I meant things with semicolons and brackets and that sort of thing. Hehe.
Hope this was sort of the answer you were after...
If not, just let us know.

That's pretty much it!
Hmm... Here's some useful stuff for staying IC:
Miswoven = bugged
Weaves = RL days. It ticks over everyday at 0:00 GMT
Insanity = sometimes used to remain in-character while dealing with newbies going OOC
I'm sure there are others.

Circle of Experience, Circles = your level.
Experience = exp (subtle difference)
Hunting, Bashing = killing NPCs for exp.
"What Circle of Experience have you reached"
"I am at the 23rd Circle"
"Good, you should go out and hunt a little more then"
"Yes, I do need more experience"
Of course, you don't have to be so proper:
"I gotta hunt more or, UGGG, I'm going to SCREAM!"
Also: Nil tends to be the replacement for 'Hell'
"Stupid cow, I'll sell you to Nil!"

Nil -has- to be a replacement for Hell as Hell doesn't exist. I think someone had rolepoints taken off for saying hell once.

See HELP ELDERLANGUAGE in game if you are concerned about language in the realm. That tends to be a good starting point to getting a personal vocabulary and dialect going.

Every second sentence from me.

While it is commonly used, many people are urked when people call people from certain places an abbreviation of their proper name.
For example:
Mag = commonly the term for Magnagoran. Magnagoran is a much better term. This is perhaps the only term that actually is used like this.
Also, for Serenwilde - there is a rather common term that everyone uses, 'Seren'. This means the people of Serenwilde.
Bashing is used? Eww, bashing is so Achaea. As is using experience - I mean using it here in there, but I have never actually heard anyone use it like a common term.
Also, I would suggest that since Nil is used for Hell, Celestia would be used for Heaven. Although - Serenwilde and Glomdoring both would deny that.

Oddly enough, Celestia realy can't be marked as a heaven like how Nil = hell. Nil is..well, ugly, nasty, and liable to hurt you at a moment (at least as far as the average person can understand it), thus "being sent to Nil" means "being sent to a pit where Demon lords can torture you".
Celestia, though, isn't seen as a 'paradise' by anyone not Celest (I'm not even sure Celest sees it that way). The only way you can link Celestia as 'a good place to be' is if you link the beings with Cristian angels and arch-angels: an OOC linking.
As for bashing, I MIGHT be thinking Achaea, sorry. Experience, I've heard it used, sort of like how you can go climb a mountain "for the experience". Level and exp is along side Quit/Log in for the most difficult thing to convert to Roleplay.
Oh yah, another one. You (that is, the player) = your Soul. I don't particularly like it, but it's the best explaination for things like when you as a player are too tired to play properly.
"Ugg, sorry about that, I can feel my Soul weakening a little" or some such.
What I'd like to see is a way to speak about HP/MP/Ego effectively without resolting to "I lost 1000 hp"

Grr, I so dislike when someone says something like that.
"My soul this", "my soul that".
It's annoying hearing it over and over again.

Make it simple, talk as you normally would, spell it out.
Don't try to find away to talk about RL things, this includes but not limited to:
Health as numbers, say damn that hurt, DO NOT say that did 800 damage.
Misweave... no don't ever use this I personnally will deduct rolepoints for it. There is no reason to ever discuss bugs IC.
You the player, common use is soul. Again, don't do it there is no need for it.

So you have deducted like 500 rolepoints from me from what I talk about on the AoH clan?
Acrune2005-10-10 13:59:46
Rolepoints are a bitch, gotta watch yourself like a hawk. If the wrong person is in the wrong mood, you lose points for saying 'level' on a channel that one other player and apparently an admin are listening to.

We don't watch clans really, as they can be OOC if the owner wishes it to be.

OH...
well, I learned something new. Forget everything I stated. I know I will.

I think you are wrong here. Straight from the Portal of Fate we are taught that the goings on in the world are woven by the Fates. Therefore, a problem in the world would be a miswoven thread, hence a Misweave. It is far easier to explain a skill not working, or an issue with something as a misweave than anything else. It is summed up right there in an IC way, and everyone knows exactly what is going on without any serious side stepping.
To say we shouldn't discuss bugs IC, is only slightly correct. We shouldn't be discussing them in an OOC fashion. However to say, "Please refrain from doing that because there seems to be a misweave involving that currently", is an IC way to let everyone know that something is screwed up.
Hajamin2005-10-10 14:41:18
Bugs are NOT IC, never have been, never will be. Do not try to find a way to claim that they are, they are not. Misweave is just as OOC as saying bug. You cannot determine if something is or is not a bug, that is My job. If you think it is, you bug it. If it's major enough that we need people to stop doing it WE will announce it, not you.
