Scent is a mass scry that doesn't use bal or eq and doesn't trigger Aethersight.

It does require you to have balance, though.

He's making a cop out argument. If scent took two second of balance, would it make a difference? I mean seriously, change it take balance... god forbid I lose balance for 2 seconds.

It's not a cop-out argument, Narsrim. Quidgyboo is simply looking at part of my argument rather than the whole thing. The rest of it points out that there is no counter to Scent accessible to anyone without Totems.
Unknown2005-10-11 10:01:05
Well no not really, the balance doesn't matter to me. It's not like I'm going to be interested in scenting anyone while I'm getting smacked around.

There is also no way to cure ectoplasm witout a city-based enchantment (well, I guess you could run to water and scrub, which takes 8 seconds of balance, but that isn't very realistic). Is that wrong too?
Gregori2005-10-11 10:07:08
Again though, another fact constantly ignored. Scan does the same exact thing minus room names. Does it really matter if I know what room you are in as opposed to I only know if you are in the area? If I know you are there no matter what I can react to it, and guess what. Scan has no defense period.

Since obviously everyone loves to bitch and moan about how overpowered *instert organization name here*'s skills are, i propose we activate plan C.
Plan C consists of the following, nerfing every skill until they're all degenerated to the effectivness of Newbie kick and newbie punch, and named appropriatly, forcing everyone to reincarnate into *race* so we have no racial overpoweredness, and then everyone will be happy, since we'd all have basically the same skills.
No obviously this isn't a serious post, but hey, if this continues i'm sure we'll get there before we have our 2 year anniversary.

Correct, knowing the exact room a person is in is far superior to just knowing the person is in general area. It is like the difference between: I can sense we have enemies in this 10-block radius and our enemies are at 175 Thugs Lane in Apt 2B, hiding in the 3rd bedroom to the right.

Scent has its uses in limited range, and Farscout has its uses in broader range. They both haver thier pros and cons, but to put this thread back where it started. The main complaint was that Gems of Cloaking do not stop scent. Gem's of Cloaking do not stop Farscout, Demesne watch, Demesne sense, Scan, Scent, Scry, Window... Period.
If there is to be a universal defense that stops scent. Then I expect those people calling for such to also pose a universal defense that stops all those other abilities.
Otherwise all you are saying is "I should be able to use my skills against you, but it is unfair for you to use your skills against me." In affect whining for the sake of whining.

actually gregori theres no way for me to catch a groundhogging seren You burrow - I dig - by the time I regain balance you would have burrowed again or moved. Its happen numerous times before.

Get a Taint Wyrm

oh yeah wait let me look for that in tracking I THINK I HAVE THAT...
or maybe my dog can do it if I train it hard enough... MAYBE!
"common doggie go dig for the smelly seren... common boy..."

I would rather see Scent actually provide you with a scent and not a name. The more experienced players will be able spot people they know by their scent.
This scent could be some ID number, or it could be a few descriptive words. A woodland smell would denote someone from the Serenwilde. A strong musky scent might denote a Tae'Dae.

My Envoy suggestion will be that using a Cleanse enchantment make you invisible to Scent for one Lusternian day.

Mind telling me how one application of a bath is going to keep you from smelling for an entire day? It doesn't really work like that...
One minute, MAYBE. A full day is insanity.

Somebody close this thread? Nobody is listening to anyone and they are all arguing right past eachother.
I'll sum it up like this... Skill X is too strong becuase of Y... Yeah? But you can have access to B!

You get on forums and post about abilities that you don't understand. You make statements like this: "Scent is the only ability that locates a target that has no defense." This is WRONG. There are other abilities that do. You simply just don't know about them - however, your ignorance is not justification that your arguments "make sense," when most of the time, you seem to piece together what an ability does from what is posted on forums instead of actually looking into it. Do your damn homework if you are going to comment.
Narsrim2005-10-11 17:17:13
And I have no idea why everyone seems to be fixating on "counter" when there is no counter to scry. If you want "detection" when someone uses scent, someone should clarify.
Aethersight doesn't block scry/farscout/window. Why should something therefore block scent?

It's really about usefulness of Gem of Cloaking.
Seems like the whole argument about scent comes from frustration because the gem is not as useful as some of you think it should.
Scent doesn't look overpowered from the looks of it (I don't have it but it's been described well through these 8 pages. ). The only thing I can come up with is that it should take balance. Scan doesn't but it doesn't tell the locations as well. Observe, for example, does.
