If you are ever thinking of purchasing wireless network equipment for your home, office or wherever you play Lusternia or generally use the internet. DO NOT DO IT.

Just a friendly warning! I'm serious too, wires are your friends, wireless sucks.

Why?

because this happens a lot....

The reconnections are were my wireless decided to disconnect and this apparently happens to a lot of people that have heard me complain about it.

With a heavy overhand stroke, Lyco slams an unadorned darksteel rapier down
upon you. You are hacked in the chest for a small surface wound.
Hmmmm. Why must everything be so difficult to figure out?

With a focused look, Xenthos strikes at you with a baleful rapier of darkened

fails to strike you.

That's a configuration or reception problem, not a problem with wireless networks in general.

If it's a configuration problem, the computer with the router will also drop connection intermittently, corrected by disconnecting and reconnecting the router and modem. Uninstall, actually sit down and read the directions, read the addendum to see if there are any quirks for your ISP, then try again.

If it's a reception problem, you should either a) get a range extender, or cool.gif get a new desk (if it's a desktop computer). You'd be suprised at how quickly you get beyond the 40' range of the standard router. Also, keep in mind that said 40' assumes you're in an open studio, and doesn't account for interference from household wiring, solid walls, or various appliances.
Marsu2005-10-21 22:45:49
I'm annoyed, I reserve the right to complain about wireless in general tongue.gif

I'm assuming its a general problem with wireless because a lot of people agree with me as well but you're probably right.

I've spoken with the manufacturers about it to no avail. I'll actually just go back to USB when I can be bothered going for a long enough wire.

Thanks for the advice though.
Tias2005-10-22 03:50:53
I had to fix this problem before. Try uninstalling your drivers for the wireless then reinstall them. It worked for me with no trouble after.
Unknown2005-10-22 06:52:11
Um.. what kind of wireless hardware are you using?
Sylphas2005-10-22 09:14:37
My wireless is totally fine.
Unknown2005-10-22 09:37:48
Yeah, I'm not sure what he was using. If it's built-in then the only thing I can say is to get some REAL hardware that compatible with your router, but even that isn't necessary these days. Either he's getting extremely bad reception, his desktop connection decided to reset after so many hours of being up, or I'm just not sure (I actually had one more thing, but I.. forgot. It's late).

If you're really concerned you can always set up a more secure link with your router using 16 or 32 character codes to ensure you don't get any random interference.

Edit: Meh. I think it's actually called 64-bit or 128-bit encryption. It's still A-F letters and a set amount of characters. I think 16? A little MAC filtering would help too in terms of security, but that's a bit too extreme.
Acrune2005-10-23 02:41:30
Mine used to do that every hour or so... but then it fixed itself and only does it once or twice a month, which is acceptable I suppose, and probably happens with wires as well.

Encryption will actually worsen the effects of interference.

Really? ninja.gif That's.. odd. I don't use it anyway..
Unknown2005-10-23 04:49:03
Well I've just gotten a new laptop and set up the wireless router, no problems so far. I've also activated the encryption to stop others from using my net, no problems with this either.
Eyod2005-10-23 07:03:17
My wireless router does that if it begins to over heat as does my card, but it doesn't happen till several hours of play so thats alright
Stangmar2005-10-24 04:21:28
hmm, if your router is at a lower point then your comp, then expect that to happen a lot, and to have a weak signal(ie, router in basement, compy upstairs, like mine)
Sylphas2005-10-25 07:17:53
Um... why? The only thing I can think of that would affect it any more than normal is like, gravity, and gravity only affects matter. What am I missing?
Acrune2005-10-25 14:00:36
Gravity affect everything. Thats why black holes are black. They suck in all the light cuz of the weird callapsed star gravity. At least that what I've heard, I've never really paid attention in school happy.gif
Sylphas2005-10-25 18:33:23
Ok, let me rephrase: On Earth, gravity can be pretty much discounted unless you're a physicist doing special calculations. Yes, the sun will bend light around it, yes, black holes and such do that. However, Earth isn't even nearly as massive, and over the short distance a wireless router will send that signal, it should make no difference.
Stangmar2005-10-26 00:27:06
Well, alls i know is, i get a crappy signal on my laptop if i'm above it, but if i'm on the same floor, but farther away, i get a better signal.
Unknown2005-10-26 00:34:12

212255

That's just because the signal has to go through the floor and everything else, not just walls, I assume.

Although, perhaps you're right and the signal transmits more along horizontal waves, not so much vertical, though I did assume it was more of a sphere-like radius. Either way, you can get a booster to improve the transmission.

EDIT: If you do decide to boost the signal I would advise you to encrypt it, too, through your router settings. I know when I came home and turned this laptop on I could see someone elses unsecure network, and if I was a bad person I could have very easily connected to it.
Iridiel2005-10-26 11:19:50
Just check at a building, walls are usually much thiner (unless is a main wall) than the several layers of metal and stone and parket that would make your average ceiling.

Yes, my wireless drove me insane a while ago where it would just die and......lag insanely. But somehow it fixed itself and is perfect now which is good because my internet provider didn't know what to do and I sure as heck didn't either...
