How is downtime handled on Lusternia in-character? That is, the time your character is logged off. I’ve seen various ways of dealing with it, from “my character was sleeping” (cheesy) to “my character left the realms for a while” (so-so, but acceptable).

I prefer the following approach. It is assumed your character is up and about when logged off, but they are dealing with banal, everyday things. We roleplay the highlights of our character’s lives, leaving the tedious parts behind the scenes. For example, my character is an Ur’Guard. I assume that when I am not logged on, he is busy with day-to-day military life- he’s busy with drills, PT, patrolling, local security, and weapon maintenance, not to mention the obligatory dog-and-pony-shows (read: inspections) for the brass. Some may reply, “We play adventurers and heroes, every day for them is exciting!” Ask anyone who was in the military or law enforcement- most of it is boring, hard work punctuated by brief moments of excitement and action.

Sounds about right to me. My character spends his downtime studying his latest interest, whether that be stargazing, history, geography, or culture. I figure it's a decent reason for me to go out my way to do the same thing, thus explaining how my character knows things he didn't remember after stepping through the portal.

To each their own though, I suppose.

Most often, Tsuki is resting. It's easiest to say that, especially when I am in dire need of rest as well and Tsuki starts doing odd things (LOVE instead of LOSE a few days ago, various typos making her tongue twist, etc.). Sometimes she's retreated to focus on certain matters, which usually happens when I just need to do other things and will most likely return in a few hours. I'm thinking that when I visit home over Thanksgiving, Tsuki will probably be undertaking a journey for 3-4 months and be mostly out-of-touch (though I can always pester my brother to let me keep an eye on messages, at least, and hop on if there's something urgent).

Whenever I start getting GNT and Newbie mixed up it means Joli needs a nap. That's so embarressing..

Peeka is is usually sleeping in her tree, or cleaning her house, doing laundry (how exactly that is done in Lusternia, I have no clue.) and other chores that are boring and exist farrr into the background.

Well since leaving tends to be a sort of OOC necessity, I've always just considered it to be bad ettiquette to ask where someone's going when they say they're leaving and QQ.

Since it will never come up in game... does it matter? For me it's just part of the suspension of disbelief inherent in a MUD

Kymir either goes up to Nil to pray and languish and whatnot, or just plays it off as travelling somewhere for a brief increment of time (say, going on a pilgrimage to the Skarch). After all, the Basin's supposed to be a hell of a lot bigger than we picture it to be from an OOC perspective. Each room could easily equal, say, a mile of RL turf.
