My boss and I were discussing my reasonings as to why I would never vote an atheist into any public office or support one. Pagan, wiccan, I dont care.. just believe in something.
Just thought I would get everyones thoughts on it.

Suhnaye2005-10-24 21:06:20
I believe in something! I just don't know what it is! I once thought I was athiest, but that don't work, cuz I do believe in god, or somethin like god, or some higher existance or something like that... But I'm drunk, so I think I'd better be goin *Waves*
Narsrim2005-10-24 21:07:45

They are all forms of spirituality though.. By spirituality I dont mean you have to believe in a higher power..
Cwin2005-10-24 21:16:02
That include the belief in yourself as the final power?
(no, I don't follow that. I'm typical Christian *ducks*)

oh. but confusianism and buddhism are both aethiests(well, many of them. i practice theravada buddhism, rather bad at it though. i'm also aetheist i guess)
Cwin2005-10-24 21:27:01
I think it's 'aetheism' as in believes in nothing 'spiritual'. No god, or gods, or 'all encompasing force' or anything that can be argued against by saying "I can't see it, feel it, or touch it, thus it's all your imagination"

well, that leave confusianism out, except for that they believe in anscestor spirits, but that's a very small part of it.
and have you ever heard the "null theory"? where "if something can't be disproven, it is untrue/discarded/wronge/no use"

Personally I'd rather have someone in office that is doing things because they are the best thing to do, not because they think that their god wishes them to do it, or forbids them to do something else.
blind faith+politics=spanish inquisition
The mix is still around today, and still causing problems.
Nyla2005-10-24 22:09:43
When I say athesists(I know I am probably not spelling that right) I am referring to those without any spirituality not those who do not believe in God or gods.

No, agnostic is someone who just doesn't have an opinion.
QUOTE(Urban dictionary)
Someone who doesn't feel that their is enough evidence to prove or disprove god.
One who believes that it is impossible to prove whether a supreme being (or a 'God') exists or not. An individualist who has finally realised that the statement 'Billions of mindless drones can't be wrong' is bull.

<------- agnostic determinist.
Unknown2005-10-25 02:56:07
I'm still wondering why though. Regardless of faith, anyone can have dreams, goals, desires, and a strong drive. Not only that, but a faithless person might be more open to others than the "God bless America and only America" group (Since Nyla's from the US). On the other hand, if they were openly atheist then this might cause a rift in those that have faith, but I think that's the ignorant way of taking things.

That's not exactly the definition used in the philosophy/theology community.
Unknown2005-10-25 07:14:27
How do you define 'spiritual'?
Someone who tries to get the most out of every day, and always treats other people with kindness doesn't necessarily have to make assumptions about the creation and existence of the universe.
There is no need for 'belief'.

Any no belief implies you'll try to get the most of each day and treat people with kindness, Avaer
I just need to look at some of our spanish important priests.

that definition makes it seem like being an "individualist" is a good thing...
after all, the good of the whole above the good of oneself.
(although again i must state that i'm anti-christian)
