Alright, after Ecology has been released for a bit I noticed the big difference between Serenwilde and Glomdoring in the familiar department.
Serenwilde has: Badger, Fox, and Owl. None of which were found in the Serenwilde forest before or the rest of Lusternia as far as I know.
Glomdoring has: Spider, Viper, and Bat. All of which were found in the Glomdoring before.
Now this might be seen as an advantage or disadvantage. Such as Serenwilde having unique familiars has the problem of Trackers being able to Seek them out easily whereas Glomdoring's familiars have many other animals of the same type that aren't loyal to an Ecologist. However, since Glomdoring's animals look like others of the same type they are often killed by newbies and novices. You might say "Well you should teach your novices what to not attack and write posts about it etc." Guess what, Glomdoring does. There's been around 4-5 posts on the subject and I'm pretty sure they have help files as well. So I was wondering if this whole deal is intentional or if whoever was coming up with the familiars lost all their creativity. ( No offense)
Granted, if new familiars are released I'd be fine with it being the same as the existing ones just a different name and description. I was going to look at different types of the familiars that would fit instead, but I'm to arachnophobic to look at pictures of different spiders.

Wouldn't this be a reason to keep your familiar somewhere safe say... a manse where a novice can't go?
Genos2005-10-25 20:13:38
That's not the point. The point is that there's a difference in the familiars and I was wondering why it was this way.

I would assume it was just how it ended up. The designer wanted to make Serenwilde have natural creatures that would be logical to Serenwilde forest and the same for Glomdoring. Whereas the point you have made were likely not considered, it isn't something that is truly that big of a deal to fix if it concerns you.
Nyla2005-10-25 20:19:26
Everyone was told to keep them in the guildhall.. if they dont and they get killed its their fault.
Xenthos2005-10-25 20:22:20
Why don't you have to declare to kill familiars? You have to declare to break a meld, don't you? And you can get a much deeper bond to a familiar than a demesne.
Narsrim2005-10-25 20:24:14
Good point. I never realized that.
Genos2005-10-25 20:30:37
It's not a big deal at all but I was thinking about it earlier and it just kind of bugged me. I guess I was wondering if other people thought it was kind of weird as well.

Its like forging, except you can do *something* to protect against it.
Munsia2005-10-25 22:04:00
such a nulled point that has no reason in this thread
Cairam2005-10-25 22:13:09
Imagine if Serenwilde's familiars did look like Serenwilde creatures. They'd have bunnies, frogs and squirrels. Oooh, big scary animals!
Estarra2005-10-25 22:45:10
That's actually an "oops" because I meant to release owls, badgers and foxes in Serenwilde. Sometimes there's so much going on that it is hard to keep track of what you want to do!
Vix2005-10-26 00:12:59
Heh, no one bashes Serenwilde creatures anyways because they're generally not that great. *eye Glomdoring's free bashing ground*

Hmm, you have to remember not everyone has a manse or something close to that.
Anyway, there are still some non-novices who kill familiars, mostly by accident. I agree with Xenthos that having to declare a familiar is a good way to stop this.

I'll do it for you if you just cause the ones I make reset

Random idea - if you use a corpse that is the same animal as a familiar, you get that type of familiar?
Owl corpse -> owl familiar, for example.
Just out of randomness.... I don't even have ecology.

It would be fun if we had a broader range of familiars.
Ferrets, weasels, martins, raccoons. squirrels, rabbits, hares, otters, minxs, wolverines, shews, groundhogs, monkeys, tapir, aardvarks, lemmings, humminghirds, red panda's beavers, bob cats ,lynxs, turtoises, possoms, porcupines, hedgehogs, echidnas, skunk black and or white swan, chipmunk,

or not..
Ialie2005-10-26 02:30:52
Why not?
Munsia2005-10-26 02:40:42
because for as useless as the bonds are without being deepbonded (although I love using my undeepbonded pet for scouting out village guards) they dont need sooooo many designs
