This is the key thing. How are we supposed to take the word of another organisation over any of our own members if they catch someone overlinking? It just won't work.
I am just of the opinion that it's fine as is. You can still bash there, just with difficulty. So it doesn't need Divine fixing. But even if it was bad this way, players couldn't fix it, it just can't happen.

Perhaps it had something to do with shards of the seal of life being stuck inside the nodes?

It is a combination of both. The only scary part to Astral in the past was that you could get swarmed. The individual creatures are not that powerful, but deadly in high numbers. Now, there are no high numbers and just a few critters scattered here and there.
The Tosha Pits are by far 10x nastier than the Astral Plane. Given the reputation built up about the Astral Plane in the histories, you'd think it was a bad place, but not really.

The Astral plane consists of more than those annoying goats.

I hear that some want the plane as tough as it was during the Kethuru event...well, personally that would be sweet for Niara as noone except for the titans and a very selected few would hunt there anymore. But you forget something. No matter how challenging fights with mobs are you still need countless of them when you reach high levels. And when you really intend to make it to titan then such challenges would get rather annoying. Take for example the manifestations of dreaming. They are a challenge, at least for 99% of the playerbase. While I enjoy hunting a few per day I would be seriously annoyed if the whole astral plane would be like that. Don't get me wrong, I love hunting them but only because they are few. I really don't like it when you always await the next attack and know that you could just be dead.
The astral plane has become rather harmless, indeed, but then this is only true for chars that are beyond 60th level and only because a bunch of players screwed up the plane. As long as certain players want to keep the plane dead nothing will change and there is nothing the rest of the players can do about it.

Astral plane has never been scary, its always been a pansy land.
If you control how many mobs come out, then there is no real danger of getting swarmed.
And there is no doubt that if you declare something to be impossible that you will never be able to solve that problem.

There was always the danger of a group arriving on the sphere while you were linking, spawning a lot more evil creatures than you expected.

well you dont really control what happens: i linked once, unlinked turned round to find 15 eagles with no one else i could see even on astral anywhere all the sphere links were cut off and i just had to run around in circles till i died...if theyd been separate i might have lived but theyd all grouped up doesnt sound like pansy land to me but then again i think that was just a wierd bug or someone with a cubix and gem who doesnt like me *peer*

Fun I was up on astral trying to kill the scorpions playing hit and run when someone linked the cancer node and they all jumped me right after I had run from the scorpions..
I saw a person there but he claimed it was actually me that linked the node.
So either he lied to cover his bum or their was a third shooter on the grassy knoll :x

Actually Niara, during the ubermob bug on Astral (where certain mobs would spawn that were upto L200) a LOT of people enjoyed and relished the challenge of it - well at least the people I know of in Magnagora that bashed up there at the time).

Hypothetical situation--maybe the ghosts of the Nine are passing judgement on Viravain. Maybe Viravain gets punished and might end up trapped on the Astral Plane.

Was that an accomplishment? I used to bash Leo by myself when they were just standard weaklings and I was a frail level 50 elfen. Who had to run away every two seconds.
