Actually the best way to clean a keyboard is to put it in the dishwasher.

What, Hajamin is crazy you say?  Anyone that is certified in repair(like I am, both civilian and military) can tell you keyboards are designed to be able to handle water.  Just let it air dry COMPLETELY before using it again.  I clean mine this way every couple month, as I live at it so it gets pretty dirty.

Dishwasher works to ya, but not everyone has a dishwasher although everyone should have a shower. *grin* Which is why I suggested that one.

Keep a can of compressed air around. They sell for about 8.00 for 2 cans. Use that weekly to just blow the grit out of the keys and every now and then give your keyboard a bath.

Why is that people who works in computers are the ones who use drastic measures with their equipment, while everybody else just treats it as if it deserved being sitting on a feather cushion?

Personally, I don't dare put it on the dishwasher. Not yet. But I can use that to threaten the thing... After all, my router went back to good working after being told he would spend all the night out in the rain (worst rains in barcelona for the past 10 or 15 years smile.gif )

Because we know what it can and can't handle, and everyone else is paranoid.

Doesn't that depend on your keyboard. Some dishwashers combined with some keyboards would melt the plastic.

Melt? You realize how insanely hot your dishwasher would have to get to do that?
Corr2005-10-31 19:08:18
I have seen quite a few things melt in a dishwasher. It all depends on how cheap your plastic is.

And I don't mean melt, as in turn into liquid. I mean melt as in become disfigured.

Tried and true method that myself and older computer builders have used for years. Hook up secondary keyboard, pull keys off primary keyboard, put keys in a bucket of soapy water, put keyboard in shower, spray down with hot water until clean, let dry for 24 hours.

Now I bet you will hear gasps of shock and astonishment from new age kids who think "OMG you can't put water on a keyboard." but quite frankly this method has been used for years and years.

If you have one of those multimedia keyboards though, just buy a new one.

I have no shower. My dad broke it and never fixed it.

If I put the keyboard in the dishwasher, my dad would give me a nice cussing for it. But... anyway.. do you just stick it in there or take the keys out first?

And what have you been doing at the computer that gets it dirty that fast? You don't spill coffee on it, do you?

I know it can't handle being vomited on or being beaten against a garbage dumpster. (That was so much fun and our teacher actually let us do it!) ninja.gif

My brother took it apart and tried to clean every bit of the nastyness out of it, but when he put it back together it didn't work anymore.. Maybe he just didn't let it dry, but I am so not touching that keyboard after seeing what he did to it..

ohm.. what do you do if the key only works when you manually capitilize it? (like shift+c, not putting caps lock on) I keep having problems with the 'm' key and it's peeving me off.
Hajamin2005-10-31 22:33:07
Just put the whole thing in the dishwasher, leave all the keys on.

Maybe once I have my own place and computer, but right now my dad would murder me even if it did work. I'll need to jot that down somewhere so I'll remember. They should really teach this kinda stuff in my computer systems class.

Many basic repair classes will teach it, at one point it was even on the A+ exam.

Psh If i can sterilize a keyboard it certainly won't meld in a dishwasher.

By the way anyone know a way to clean optical mice?
Iridiel2005-11-02 09:48:04
Clean both the mouse lens and the surface you're using it against with that alcohol thing you use to clean glasses or crystals. I usually treat them as I do with my glasses (no, no dishwasher smile.gif )

What about optical wireless keyboards? That doesn't quite seem dishwasher safe?
Anisu2005-11-04 18:51:42
I don't know what an optical keyboard is but a wireless keyboard greatly depends on the type, the cheaper designs will have no backup batteries, but the better quality ones have a battery you can't remove and can't be put in a dishwasher. circuits under power + water = bad
