Ok, so I just played a skirmish on hard level and I was able to defeat my opponent with less than 20 armies. All I used was one cannon and 10 indians. This was playing as the spanish, and I didn't even build an artilery, either got the cannon from my upgrade leader or in one of my shipments. I can't remember.

Really with games like Rome: Total War around, there is no excuse for supposedly leading RTS franchises like Age of Empires still being the ridiculous, rush-loving tactically retarded monstrosities that they are. When it's a strategy game, the strategy should be the most important thing, not gimmicks and graphics.

If you want a strategy game and arn't looking for graphics but strategies get Starcraft:Brood War
It's all about strategy, there are so many ways to micro manage in that game it's not even funny, with the correct units used in the correct ways against the correct enemies you can destroy far larger forces. The whole game is like a massive rock-paper-sissors match.
