Um.. they can't? Splendor robes maybe if you get lucky.. but then how many tailors are there that can wear a set. sad.gif We need more tailors!!

You take that much out from me saying you charge a bit steeper and Shorlen doesn't charge excessively? unsure.gif

I find it in the combination of what you said here and your declaring my prices to replace/rejuvenate your cloaks outrageous in-game... AND in the number of other people who keep taking offense that I don't run my business as a public charity.

e.g.: People come to me asking about custom designs, and when I tell them the price, the most common response is, "But you don't have to pay anything to submit designs that aren't for your private use!"

Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong. I paid through the nose for those design slots. 1,000,000 gold per cartel. Plus the customer is generally asking me to flesh out a bare bones idea into a full design, then provide it to every tailor in the game as a public service. In response to which request, I happily show them the door.

And it's not really about the money. I turn away sales all the time, and have only started any sort of advertising in the last couple of months. It's about the respect -- about acknowledging that I worked hard to get where I am, and you're NOT inherently entitled to a piece of my prosperity.

I'm particularly adamant and passionate about this issue because I've spent about 90% of my professional life in various creative fields, and I'm sick to death of people who think artists -- no matter how skilled -- should feel priviliged to donate their time and efforts to whomever asks.

It took me far too long to shake off that whole guilt-trip and start telling people eager to take advantage of me exactly how much I didn't need them.

You should be a politician, really.

Heh, try being a forger, its retarded how many people get offended when you ask for a little pocket change for your hours upon hours of forging time. I meanm its seriously like " JEEZUS, I PROVIDED THE COMS, WTF MORE COULD YOU WANT?!#!"
Aiakon2005-11-21 15:47:05
I don't mind paying for anyone's services, but getting asked for a tip afterwards does kinda irritate me. Just sorta feels dishonest.

No one should ask for a tip. Tips are a customer's way of saying "Great job!" It's a thank you for excellent customer service. If someone has to ask for a tip, they probably don't deserve one.
Terenas2005-11-21 16:00:34
The real kicker is that you can put 2 elemental protection on top of that, plus wear a coat and a cloak for 4 elemental protections total. Not to mention greatrobes are dirt cheap compared to fieldplate and can be mended indefinitely if their months get low.

Yea, i started to tell people how much i want for my work. If they dont like it, they are free to go to someone else i will be have time to go kill some gorgogs and get much more gold then what i could charge for work.

People dont be afraid to say that you want payment for your work.
Aiakon2005-11-21 16:34:44
Agreed.

I get far more money from bashing than I do for enchanting, and I'm only level 77. I've had the experience of being called back from the middle of a profitable bash to have someone demanding a mere 10 charges on a ring and then hear them complaining that I charge 35 gold per, and it would have been cheaper to use a cube.

*changes thread to rant about cubes*
Kaileigh2005-11-21 19:53:10
I don't ask to be paid if the people have the comms. Then again it only takes me a few seconds to make something.
Anumi2005-11-21 20:44:53
Plus the X lessons/credits it took to learn the tradeskill, the missed opportunity cost by taking that tradeskill rather than putting into something else, and the time you could have spent on bashing/influencing/city or guild matters/RP that you spend trucking down to the enchantment room/alembic/forge and back.
Aiakon2005-11-22 15:34:39
Exactly.

It's all very noble doing it for free... but ultimately it just screws those of us who are trying to make it personally worthwhile.

Normal greatrobes: 30-65 in a stat possible, total stats: 80-110. I've never seen anything better than 108 (Kalo's robes).

Splendor greatrobes: 60-75 in a stat possible, total stats: about 135. I haven't seen many splendor robes, mine being 66/70.
Unknown2005-11-23 00:21:44
Umm, mine's 60/51. That's 111 right here. Not splendor.
Ashteru2005-11-23 00:25:29
...Mine is 56/49 and I thought that THAT was sweet....105 only, but still...
Kaileigh2005-11-23 00:39:36
My old ones were. 50/52

I have base price for each robe that is over the cost of the items. If the bring me the stuff I usually do it free.

Cause.. well you guys know where my credits came from it wasn't hours and hours of bashing. Trying to get rid of tht naugty Rumor that I am a bad person by charity.. Don't know if it's working though.

I can see where like Enchanting. Watching others do that. It's boring. I have the attention span of a goldfish I couldn't do that. I'd assume the Forging is similarly annoying. And can be screwed up. But tailoring takes 5 seconds and I'm pretty sure there's not chance of like ripping it in the process and losing everything.

Most of my profits come from my shop I get robe requests in spurts.

I need silk ;.;

Iridiel2005-11-23 12:48:13
In used to make things for free to guildmates or just friends, because it didn't take me any time.

Anybody else, I computed the comms price and added a % depending on the thing. If somebody brought me the comms, then they only paid said % that was based on the prices I knew, don't care how much did the comms cost them.

I consider bad RP doing things for free to complete strangers I have no relation with, it just didn't fit my character. Same as I don't hug random strangers, etc...
