My idea is that the bonus for learning be increased not in general but for guild undersecretaries and secretaries.

Too abusable still, people would become undersecs and secs just for those reasons.

And that's why they are an appointed position? If someone is doing a crappy job, fire em!
Soll2005-12-02 17:22:04
Certainly not 1 in 5, that's just too extreme. 1 in 20 would be good, 1 in 30 would be what I think is best. Noticeable, but not just an easy way to trans a skill. 1 in 5 would create way too many 'learning' alts. You learn to help the novices, anything on the side is a bonus, and a bonus to be thankful of.
Unknown2005-12-02 17:29:36
I just wouldn't like to see people fight over a newbie.
"Ok, I'll teach you."
Secretary jumps in.
"Stop! Stop! I will teach him, you have no right, I am a Secretary here!"
Last time I created an alt, guild official was threatening me with prolonging my probation time if I don't come and learn skills from him -right now-.

What? What moronic guild leader was that?
Shorlen2005-12-02 17:38:05
How about 1 in 5 or 1 in 15, with a cap on how much benefit you can get from learning in a single skill?
Ashteru2005-12-02 18:38:26
Or maybe make it one in five and you can't rise a skilllevel with teaching, so you'd still need to get at least -some- credits.
Mirk2005-12-02 22:16:02
1 in 30 wouldn't be bad in my opinion, at least compared to what it is now. One quick question though, how do people who create an alt to learn from themselves not get caught for playing two characters at once? I understand that maybe if they get someone else to help it may work, but if it were at a ratio of 30:1, they would only be able to gain 5.5 lessons of someone new, and in that case, it would take hours, days possibly, to trans a skill at the time it takes to teach a new player. But to prevent that, maybe set a cap on how much someone can teach per rl day (maybe a max amount of teaching 1500, which would allow someone to gain only 50 lessons in one given day, although that may be a little high or low, not sure).
Vix2005-12-02 22:34:38
They get a friend to be the learning alt instead of themselves. A cap does sound good though. Oh, and making Secs and Undersecs fight for teaching is good!
Aiwendil2005-12-03 08:06:10
Imagine all the novices being ripped apart by people who want to teach them...not because they care, but for the stupid bonus. We'd end up having people force novices to learn from them, then flee before the novice asks more about them.
@Mirk: Obviously that's against the rules. But some people don't care.
Based on what Mirk said, I do think a cap is useful if they raise the bonus. I never knew of the bonus before, so any change wouldn't have much objection from me.

Well at least they check that (or they do for Achaea...). Kind of speaking from expierience, but I only aroused suspicion because I was playing off the same network as someone else who was playing.

One in every five or fifteen would be too much, I think. One lesson for every thirty seems like a good amount.
Unknown2005-12-03 22:43:48
I agree.

As an incentive? It takes quite a lot of time to teach. More so with frustratingly inexperienced/obnoxious novices.

That would be the point.
The teaching bonus is just that, a bonus. We don't have to give you anything for teaching, but it's a nice addition. I'm really not sure where you got this 100:1 thing, as I don't even know how much it is, but I do know it doesn't calculate exactly into a lesson to lesson ratio.

I'd heard from Achaea that it was 1.5 lessons gained for every 100 taught.

Personally, I do it because I know I am helping my commune and the novices that I teach. Teaching bonuses should not be an incentive, they should be a small thank-you for the time and effort you put in. It's nice if people who teach are given some sort of reward, but it should not be so much that people teach because they want this reward. It's a bonus, like Hajamin said, not a motivator.

You're not helping too much, because they can learn just as well from a numer of denizens. The only good it does, besides the bonus, is that novices can ask you about their new skills.
