So yeah.. my really cool deal on my website is about to run out in 2 months (I was paying $10 for the entire year) so I need to find a new place, or decide if I want to keep my websites with dreamhost. (it will cost $120 next year) I need to be able to do secure transactions on the site... Anyone know of good reputable hosting companies? The cheaper the better, because although I want to be able to secure online transactions, I don't plan to actually make any money from the site. (But I like that level of security)

My search on the net gave me a funny feeling that many sites advertise to eachother creating a false sense of whats good out there.

nobody knows anything about this? Or a reputable place to find out info?

How sad... nobody knows -anything- about webhosting? why is this such a hard subject to get info on?

Because usually if it's free and good people won't share so it stays like that, or usually people use non-free hostings.
Also, the bit about secure transactions, probably in verisign you'll find a directory of hostings that allow that, mostly dependant on yout certificade I think.

http://www.1337.as is a pretty good Australian webhosting company, dunno if thats okay for you though.

If its free, I wouldn't trust it.

What is the Verisign directory?

Interesting, the Australian site costs the same as the U.S one I was looking at, only the value of the money is different... hmm I wonder.

Verisign is a provider of certificates that usually informs you where can those certificates be installed (to allow for secure transaction and https:// adresses).
www.verisign.com if I am not mistaken.
