Alright, I admit it, I love the books... And I love the first and second movies, but three and now four have been dissapointing to me.
Three's alright once I managed to get over the shock of the new Dumbledore and everything... But now in four... Dumbledore is completely wrong. He's panicky, worried, etc... He practically interrogates Harry threateningly at one point... Something I don't think Dumbledore in the book would EVER do. Also, the movie left out a ton of stuff... I understand the book was way too long to fit into one movie, so they should have made it two or three movies, rather than one. Instead of turning it into a hack job. Winky, Dobby... The world cup was horribly under-done (A part I was seriously looking forward to... ) The whole business of Rita Skeeter was under-played, and no detail was really filled in, which will screw them in five. All in all, I think the only good parts were the three tri-wizard challenges (Though the maze was way off from the book, it was still cool), and the yule ball was pretty cool. The SERIOUSLY needed to do the bouncing ferret part better... It was hilarious, but it could have had people rolling in their seats, which it didn't.
Dissapointing really... It could have been MUCH better than it was. I was worried when I saw the trailer, looked like they were rushing its release. They should have taken more time on it.

In the 4th Book, Dumbledore -is- panicky.
Ashteru2005-11-20 19:05:39
Nah, Snape is. Dumbledore is just a bit less relaxed then usual.
...at least I heard that from a friend, never read HP. Never.

Snape and the Bulgarian guy are freaked out because Voldy is coming back. Dumbledore is just getting weirded out by -everything-, and starting to realize that he's just an old, powerful man.

The movies had been getting progressively better, but #4 is a bit of a letdown. The parts they did were excellent, but so much was cut out in favour of action that it felt disjointed and wouldn't make any sense to someone who hadn't read the books.

Thank god someone else agrees with me. I concur entirely with all your points.
Dumbledore's just wrong in quite a few places, IMO, and it hit me full-on just after Harry had been through Dumbledore's memories in the pensieve. I can kinda understand missing out bits of the book, because it was massive, but they left out way too much. Four chapters missing from the beginning. No house-elf Liberation Front. No trip to Hogsmeade to talk to Sirius. No use of the map to discern between Mad-eye and Crouch. Krum wasn't attacked. Rita Skeeter's parts were too little, and she wasn't captured at the end.
Could've been so so much better. But alas.

QUOTE
Professor Dumbledore was now looking down at Harry, who looked right back at him, trying to discern the expression of the eyes behind the half-moon spectacles.
"Did you put your name into the Goblet of Fire, Harry?" he asked calmly.
"No," said Harry. He was very aware of everybody watching him closely. Snape made a soft noise of impatient disbelief in the shadows.
"Did you ask an older student to put it into the Goblet of Fire for you?" said Professor Dumbledore, ignoreing Snape.
"No," said Harry vehemently.

At no point, in ANY of the books has Dumbledore ever been panicky. He is always calm, collected, and in control. As any very powerfull wizard would be, when few in the world remotely approach them in power. Most important to remember, Harry's like a son to Dumbledore, and its very doubtfull Dumbledore would every rail Harry the way he did in the movie.
The closest to panicky he's ever been is in the sixth book... And on the chance that some haven't read it, I won't go into detail.

There were parts that I missed. I wanted to see Winky the house elf, and Dobby, again. I wanted to see Hermione get her letters, and being told that she's a "scarlet woman" for her "affair" with Harry and Viktor Krum.
But, I thought this movie was better than the third one. I thought the Horntail scene was pretty cool, although Charlie Weasley was supposed to be there, and I wanted to see him. And Mrs. Weasley, too.
And at the end, when Harry brought back Cedric's body, and everyone was crying... I cried a little, too. -sniff-
Oh yeah, we were supposed to see that Rita was an unregistered animagi! They cut that out completely.

Aye, and thats kind of an integral part of books five. So I don't know what the heck they're going to do to pull it off. If they cut out Harry's interview in five, they may as well not make the movie, cuz thats a catalyst for most of the events that come after it...
Nyla2005-11-20 20:20:14
I think the movie was great.. I got what I needed out of it (Since I dont read the books).. and I had to hit my friend cause the bastard didnt tell me someone was gonna die.. and it made me cry

Best of the four so far, but I'm a little biased I think, because I enjoyed the fourth book the most. I think one of the things that helped me is that I haven't read the book in a year or so (even though my girlfriend decided to point out the inconsistancies in the middle of the movie).
I think that no movies so far have captured the true essence of a book before. Man, if you want to talk about inconsistencies, have a conversation with Hajamin about Lord of the Rings. *shudder*

Direction, acting, character and cinematography wise this was the best movie by far. However, it is blatantly obvious that the movie was limited by budget and audiance concerns (lack of several important characters, advertisement and story elements) and it could have benefitted from 45 or so minutes and a good chunk of money for production.
Raezon2005-11-20 20:49:58
It's sad that there's any budgeting limitations because the movie is a guaranteed cash cow. All they have to do is release the DVD a little earlier and they'll recoup production costs in a heartbeat. The only problem of course is the agreements they have with theatres, keeping the DVD off the shelves while it's in theatres and a little bit after so people don't just skip the theatre experience considering 75% of the population would prefer just to grab the DVD if they had a choice for their first viewing experience. Albeit, the producing company should just be like... look, we're releasing the dvd early... you don't like it, no problem, we just won't send the movie to you at all.
Revan2005-11-20 21:12:41
Well, considering that Rowling is alive and overseeing the movie productions, I'm surprised she let any of the important stuff get cut out.. though she might have said "Meh, it's ok, we'll do it LoTR style with the special editions"
Kaileigh2005-11-20 22:01:05
I like this one better than the others. And I saw the others several times each in the theatre. While stuff was missing I didn't really realized it because the rest was pretty cool. Then again I haven't read the book since it came out.
Where as in the others I had fits over what was wrong or missing because it seemed important.
Although I'm still annoyed at the cat's eyes being red. You can make the cat's eyes read but Daniel's eyes are blue and poor him he can't wear contacts? THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE GREEN *twitch*
Oh and Fluer wasn't nearly pretty enough to be particially inhuman.

I actually didn't like two too...it was just...boring, and it didn't feel right, too many things left out. But I am like that, I wish every film would have everything in it the book has.
Unknown2005-11-21 01:54:05
I'm goin' to watch it tonight.. Hope it's better than you've all made it out to be.
