1 < 2 < 3 in movies. Seeing 4 soon.
Anumi2005-11-21 02:46:04
I dunno. As a huge HP fan, I really liked the latest movie (just saw it today). I didn't care for the third one, thought it was too rushed but this one was good. Though I agree with Dumbledore acting really weirdly in those seens where he's aggressive toward harry -- really wrong. Other than that, I think the movie was great, did what it needed to do to get the story in without making a 5-hour film.
I would've loved to see the 5-hour film, mind you, but I suppose they can't really make it that way...

I think that no movies so far have captured the true essence of a book before. Man, if you want to talk about inconsistencies, have a conversation with Hajamin about Lord of the Rings. *shudder*

Oh god.. I read the first 2 books and they cut out SO MUCH. The people that made it had to be mental to leave out soooo much important and cool stuff. It makes babies cry!

Yeah.. I wanted to smack whoever did that. You don't play techno punk crap music at a BALL. The man was singing about orcs for pete's sake.
Overall.. I liked it. I swear.. I almost died during the class where Snape kept hitting them. I have a teacher that does that.. I wanna do that when I'm a teacher. I Snape.
And I found a new celebrity to stalk.. well two of them.. I'm going to find out where the weasly twins live and go visit them..
None of the girls look liked Veelas. I really wanted.. uber pretty veelas with glittery faces and a ton of pretty clothes ectera ectera.

Lawnmower man and Minority Report are two movies that I know of that were just as good, if not better than the original books.

there was a Lawnmower man book?
Kharvik2005-11-21 06:38:49
Yeah, it's a Stephen King book I believe.
As for HP I thought they did a good job on the movie considering they only had 2 and a half hours to fit that massive book in. I wish they showed more of the monsters in the maze though.

Was three hours.. I think.
And yeah the movie itself (if you don't know the book and have no clue how odd Dumbledore and co acted and don't know what was left out etc.) might have been good.. but I think the techno stuff at the ball is just unforgiveable.

Aw, I liked the Weird Sisters! They did their slow music, and then they break out into fast music. It's like that in book four, too.
I liked the lead singers jacket, it made me think of Crow's cloak.

If you think that music was bad, be thankful you don't live in Australia - we have a trio of "sisters" that puts them to shame - The Kransky Sisters from In Siberia Tonight on SBS are pure evil.

Saw it. Horrible. They cut out Doby entirely, and gave what parts he had to Nevil. Mad-Eye was the only truely entertaining part, however, and they cut out his training of Harry to resist the Imperius curse.

I'm going to have to disagree with the vast majority of the people posting here that the 4th book was a horrible adaptation and movie. I agree that a lot of stuff was left out of the movie that was in the book, but the bulk of the movie IS what was important to the book.
Steve Kloves did a fabulous job adapting a very difficult and beloved book from print to screen and I applaud his efforts. I go into these movies knowing that "hey...stuff is going to be left out" and watching them for their cinematic purposes.
This was a fabulous movie that was full of real emotion I don't think anyone should deny or ignore. I'm 26 years old and bawled when Cedric was killed, absolutely bawled. I didn't cry reading this in the book because it felt so detached and elongated, here it was just "WAM BAM DEAD!" and just heart wrenching to watch.
I know it's a movie, but having been a fan of these books since the very first one was first published in the US(yes, I have all 1st edition hardbacks), I have to admit these movies are getting much better, if not harder to adapt to screen.
My ONLY complaint with this movie is the teeth. *shudder* Super powerful wizards and they can't conjure themselves a nice set of pearly whites...and Dumbledore needs a manicure. Kudos to Hagrid for grabbing Madam Maxime's butt and I <3 Moaning Myrtle for the adorable pervert that she is.

English people are meant to have bad teeth. It's just how it is.

It was a bit obvious that moaning Myrtle was just tinkered with a bit. She was obviously leaning on him.. and yes it did enter my mind, "Elcyrion is translucent.. Myrtle is translucent.. but you can tell she is touching Harry.. why can't I do that and not fall through?" >_<
Yup, I'm strange.

Since always? Do you not watch Family Guy or The Simpsons? Besides, you're not English you're like...Italian or something? I dunno I remember you said you had some sort of not-Englishness.

I'm English, but with Spanish ancestry and I used to live in Italy.

That one guy had.... HORRIBLE teeth.. it was painful to look at them.
Penelope2005-11-22 07:07:07
Everyone had horrible teeth. Karakaroff, Neville, Ron, Dumbledore, etc..I'm just suggesting hey...there was the one time in one of the books where Hermione got hit with a jinx that made her teeth huge, so I don't see why they can make their teeth all pretty and such.

Films made from books *includes graphic novels and short stories* that are arguably better than the books themselves :
Battle Royale
Trainspotting (the book is brilliant, if you can read and understand a typed impersonation of a Scottish accent)
Blade Runner (based on 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep')
Constantine
Exit Wounds
Eyes Wide Shut
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (Not better, but equal with the book in my esteem - Depp manages to somehow become Hunter S Thompson with a strange accuracy, while looking completely different, something I also saw Joaquin Phoenix do while playing Johnny Cash in Walk the Line)
Fight Club
Forrest Gump
Full Metal Jacket
And so on, and so on.
The thing is, with books like LOTR or even (and I don't see it to anywhere near the extent) Harry Potter, you've sat down and imagined the whole thing in a way that's perfect for you, simply from reading the writer's words. Thus, anything in a film version is going to be different to your perfect vision of the book. What you see in a film is the director's vision.

Trainspotting (the book) showed me how much I knew about drugs and how little about english.
I am supposed to meet a scotish this weekend (among other assorted british) and I am scared just thinking about the accent.
