Japanese is fun - initially. Advanced Japanese grammar is just annoying.

yup, you see how bad i speak chinese? well, only started learning about three weeks ago, so i think i'm doing pretty good for now, but i think i've got english and spanish fairly well, and chinese seems to be easier to learn than those two were. sorry for my extremely bad chinese, then.

Its acctually fairly easy to learn how to write or read new languages now days... Or at least to translate languages... Much harder to learn the grammar and speak it propperly... Reading something you can read it over a dozen times untill it seems to fit right. But go to a place where everyone speaks a different language than you and its rough to understand anything anyone says... Spoken words usually sound a good bit different from person to person, so a foriegn person new to the language is really outa their element.

I've tried learning Japanese and Chinese (Chinese only lately)... Not too good with either of them, though I think thats mostly because I get confused way too easily with unfamiliar things and then get flustered and then give up...

So many people speak Chinese wow! I'm still learning Chinese (Lady Viravain is impressive... be my Laoxi ma?)

i tried to learn it once(or was it khmer?) and couldn't get past the alphabet, too complex. 6 tone symbols!? and to me they all look the same...

Thai and khmer are so close, in north east thai they speak Isaan which is a mix of thai,laos,khmer,and bali it is so pretty!

As for Japanese, eh - It's relatively easy to learn how to speak, writing it is another story. It's easier than chinese, for sure, not being a tone language. It used to be fun to try and learn Japanese on my own, and I had considered taking it more seriously in a class. But now, I see all these scary Otaku-ish anime freaks walking into the classroom wearing cat ears and Naruto headbands or Dragonball shirts, and I'm so glad I didn't. The teacher looks grumpy about it, especially when they keep saying the same 'Datta yo' and 'Baka' and 'Kamehameha!' phrases when he's trying to teach.

But wait, the truth is now revealed! Narsrim is an anime freak...wether it is tentacles or not that attracts him, the Haven does not want to know.

Who isn't attracted by th....I mean, I'll go over there in the corner and be silent.

Japanese is actually very difficult to learn how to speak in my opinion. When almost ANYTHING is assumed as understood in Japanese, it may be left out of the conversation. It becomes very tricky.

Conversational Japanese is also very bleh to learn because all of the verbs change form (in a very non-systematic way unlike when writing because everything is highly systematic).

And like Chinese, Japanese has HUGE dialect variations. Unlike English, these reach extreme points.

For example, we all know what "sushi" is. In one dialect, anything that begins with "su" is changed to "shi" (I believe this is in Northern Japan). As a result, "sushi" is now "shishi." This irks the crap out of me.

What you all think of as "The Official Thai Language" is "Central Thai Dialect". Everyone in the country speaks thai, ie central thai, some also speak north thai or isan or south thai...

Well, I have trouble understanding people from other places of spain, specially when they get together and accent gets the worse of them.

But that's nothing compared to south american spanish. We have so many different words (or the same word has totally different meanings) that it gives place to some fun misunderstandings (specially since that happens a lot with dirty words). Curiously enough, we're supposed to be the standard spanish (Spain), even if it's the one with less speakers

What I said: "I understand Chinese, so I know what you are saying. Sorry. (for Hmm, I didn't do it either) Anyway, my Chinese is... very poor. You had better not ask me. However, if you want my help, I will still help you."

Viravain: "They don't understand - Please say it again, in English. Are you Chinese (as in, Chinese from China aka Chinaman). Or are you not a Chinese but are a student?"

I didn't understand the last line she said, except it was about being sorry for having lousy Chinese (along those lines) and needed to practise more.

At the moment, tsaephai's Chinese (or Mandarin to be more formal) is MUCH better than Viravain's (OMG I just insulted a Divine! *hides*). For example, Viravain messed up the order of some words (is that under "grammar"?). She got some vocab wrong as well.

eg. "Ni dei duo lianxi!", which I guess is supposed to mean "you ought to practise more", should be "Ni gai duo lian xi".

eg2. "Duibuqi, wo shi bu Laoshi, wo shi xuesheng ye." Literal translation, "*garbled*, I am no *garbled*, I am student also." I guess she wanted it to mean, "Sorry, I am not a teacher, I am also a student." It should have been written as, "Dui bu qi, wo bu shi lao shi, wo ye shi xue sheng." Note that when trying to turn "am" into "am not", you put "bu" (no) in front of "shi" (yes). "Ye" (also) should be straight after "wo" (I).

eg3. You're not supposed to join any of the words together. Like "Yingguohua", which should be "Ying guo hua", three seperate words for three seperate sounds. She intended it to mean "English", but the literal translation is "language of England". She could have used "ying wen", which sounds more casual (and less sniding).

In answer to Viravain's questions: I'm not from China. I'm Singaporean Chinese. That means, I'm a Chinese from Singapore, which is not in China, South America, the Bermuda Triangle or wherever some people think it's located. There's a place called Singapore in America I think, but it's not a prominent place. I saw it in the newspaper years back. I could cough up a whole lot of links about Singapore if you want to know more about it.
