Okay,
Who's excited about seeing what will hopefully be the first movie in a long-running series! It's a great book and we have the WETA people working on the special effects!
After all, Estarra named Aslarans after Aslan, the Noble Lion Savior of this fantasy series. So I expect at least one person on this forum will be coming to see this.

Yes, they are great books... which is why I won't watch the movie. Making movies from books is something that should never be done, they ALWAYS destroy the book.
Unknown2005-12-07 01:06:49
Aww..c'mon...it doesn't always kill the books. Harry Potter's done pretty good so far. I'm wanting to see the Chronicles of Narnia, but I'm going to be a bit against it because the first one/series was good.

Bah they do not. It's a different medium, that's all, and it has to be adapted to that.
But yes, I am very excited about this .
Shamarah2005-12-07 02:02:07
Yeah, I hope the movie's good. I love those books.

What's "pretty good"? Complete and total disregard for the book, butchering the plot, butchering character relations, complete and total removal of characters, irrelevant of the irreversable damage to the plot of future books?
If so, yea, they've done fantastic.
Unknown2005-12-07 02:18:04
I'm extremely excited about it! None of the theatres in town are doing the midnight release thing for it though, which makes me sad. I'll have to wait until I get off work on Friday to see it.
Richter2005-12-07 02:22:03
I can't wait, the Chronicles of Narnia (and LotR) is what got me into fantasy, I read them all in third grade or so.
Iridiel2005-12-07 13:27:18
Haven't read them, so I'll probably go see the film, then if I get the ebook take a look at it. Sounds a biiit too childish for me to like it, but well, I read anything with letters after all.

But films aren't books. They don't work the same, I can guarantee you right now a complete word for word perfect copy of a Harry Potter book to screen would be just about the worst film ever made. Its the same reason the LOTR films are NOTHING like the books.
I actually hate - with a passion - the Harry Potter books, I can't stand the writing style it makes me cringe. The films however, I enjoy greatly. Treat the films as what they are, stand alone projects about things similar to things that may or may not have happened in the books. Why would you want to pay to go and watch exactly what you read in a book anyway.
Also, is anyone else always wound up when people think that The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is the first Narnia book?

Well heck, people had to explain for 25 years or so that Star Wars: A New Hope wasn't the first one (though I'm not sure if the first Narnia book was written first, I think C.S. Lewis did something similar, and went back and did the prequel). They'll figure it out though, if they look.
*starts reading Chronicles of Narnia.*
*reads about the creation of Narnia in The Magician's Nephew*
*mind explodes*

Order they were published -
1. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950)
2. Prince Caspian (1951)
3. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952)
4. The Silver Chair (1953)
5. The Horse and His Boy (1954)
6. The Magicians Nephew (1955)
7. The Last Battle (1956)
Order of the stories chronologically -
1. The Magicians Nephew
2. The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
3. The Horse and His Boy
4. Prince Caspian
5. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
6. The Silver Chair
7. The Last Battle
The original set published in the US was order by publishing date, but Lewis' grandson said to a British publisher that they should actually be numbered in order of the story as was Lewis' preference.

I agree that movies can't be compared to books as they are totally different mediums. Books are much more immersive both in the time it takes to read them and the experience of getting into the minds of the characters. Movies, on the other hand, have to tell the whole story in about 2 hours and cannot delve as deeply into the character psyche as books no matter how good the actor. So really it is best to try and not compare a movie to a book as its like comparing apples to oranges.
Anyway, I ADORE the Chronicles of Narnia. They are comfort reading to me--like eating comfort foods makes you feel secure, so too are these books to me. Ever since I was 10 years old and up into my 20's, I'd read them whenever I was blue. I must have read the series dozens of times.
And I'm definitely excited about the movie! I've seen the cartoon, the PBS series and the play, and enjoyed them no matter how awful they were. So there's no way I'll miss this blockbuster!

I dunno, Sin City was a pretty awesome adaption IMHO, and there have been a few others that were just as good as the book versions too.
Marcalo2005-12-08 02:40:17
Sin City was so wicked. I have never read the Cronicals book, but i am looking forward to the movie, i might even pick up the book after i see the movie and check it out.
Suhnaye2005-12-08 03:20:46
I'll likely be going to the opening... I loved the books, I just hope they don't slaughter it.

But you know they will, Hollywood is good at that. After the first 10 minutes of the LOTR movie I will never again watch a movie based off a book that I enjoy. If it can't be done right, it shouldn't be done. Some books(most) just can't be turned into a movie and shouldn't be. The great works of fantasy(LORT and Narnia) just cannot be turned into movies. This is why the Tolkien estate has said they will never endorse a movie based on Tolkien's writings.
Shiri2005-12-08 03:54:11
I really despised the LOTR books actually, the movies were a lot less awful.
Guess I'm just too modern, hmm. I agree that the Harry Potter books have kind of been messed up in the movies, but it's not too bad.

I believe there was also a Chronicle of Narnia series on the disney Channel.
Everytime I see goatboy in SNL I think of Chronicles of Narnia.
At the same time, I've never read the books. I'm surprised more of you arn't bashing it based on its "christianness" (as they appear to be doing on tv and radio)

Well, we could, but then we would look silly when we laughed at people who complain that Harry Potter is too pro-atheist or pro-pagan.
