Last night, I decided to play a bit on a new character that I made. Now, I have no plans to play this character for any real length of time, but it was a nice change. I'd forgotten how fun Newton was.
I ran around newton, killing finks and gnomes (in one hit, nerf aquamancer blast!), trying to figure out those blasted quests (the hints were great though, they weren't there when I was a newbie). Within a half hour or so, I'd gained six levels, and enough gold to buy some whimpy health and mana potions from Bob. They were both overpriced and low on sips, but what a relief it finally was to get one of each!
A thousand gold once again seemed like a large amount, and ten thousand seemed years away (as opposed to Richter, who comes back to 15k in his stockroom quite frequently).
I remembered how fun it was to simply talk to someone, as opposed to being a hermit. Even the most minor roleplay was fun and exciting, and everything seemed new again.
It felt like I could take on players, using my meager new skills (I was kind of a C-list fighter in Aetolia, tons of spars, was never spectacular, but was capable with what I had), and I wasn't overwhelmed with tons of skills that I'd never really learned how to use.
I've gotta tell you, being a novice is fun. Now, I got no help whatsoever from the guild (I was on a bit late though), but I knew my way around of course, and knew where to get things. I liked how no one freaks out when you walk through a city you don't belong to, and if you go into Magnagora, they just ask you nicely to leave (as opposed to Serenwilders or Celestians tweaking every time I shop in the city/commune). I didn't have to worry about politics, and the high powered people went off and fought each other (it was quite interesting watching Amaru, especially since he was still coloured in red ).
I think that anyone who has not played a new character in a while should definately try it, and gain a different perspective on the game. After all, it's kind of boring only sticking to one character, and even though I intend to do just that, so I can make it a completely awesome character, it's nice to have a break every once in a while.

Agreed. Because many of us started during Beta, we didn't get to experience joining an already established organization. I remember being the first Geo Secretary and having to write the Geomancer structure as admin, wasn't as fun as actually advancing through it.
Actually progressing through ranks is quite enjoyable.

I've never had to progress through the ranks in lusternia...
Until now! It's actually challenging, better than writing them, like you said.

I can't stand making alts. I have too much fun with Ialie. I hate being a newbie again.

What if your character is utterly boring because you did pretty much everything and there is nothing new to try anymore?

Some people have a hard time getting enough credits to advance their main, let alone their alt. I'd consider it a waste of my time personally to create alts that can't get anywhere when my main character doesn't even have a single Trans skill to play with. It wouldn't be 'fun' it would a waste of time.
Richter2005-12-12 22:42:43
I'm not putting a single credit into him, I'm going old school.
Old school being me being a poor nobody!

Not everything you can do resolves around 20 trans skills and 500 artifacts.
Diamondais2005-12-12 22:46:08
Making alts is a good way to meet other people, try different roleplays and the such. Yeah, theyre a waste of time, but then again, technically so is playing Lusternia in the first place.
When youre bored, and you cant do anything as your main, try an alt. They arent generally restricted from doing much, technically.

I never said that did I?
I'm just saying it's a leisure that can be afforded to some, money-wise or time-wise. If you can afford more time/money to spend on your alts, great, but I'm just giving another PoV on Richter's suggestion.

I'm an altaholic, on every game I play I've hardly ever had a main character. It's harder on IRE games to make alts due to credits and the amount of time needed to be spent on each character but I can't help myself. Even in WoW, I have nine characters. However, once the expansion comes out I'll have 11 altogether. I need therapy or something...
Richter2005-12-12 23:04:58
There's someone I know with about five alts in every IRE game, each one has $100-$1000+ on them likely. *falls over*
Ashteru2005-12-12 23:15:11
And people that squall you around. *sniffs and rubs his arm*
Acrune2005-12-13 02:29:31
Yep, it was fun having a paladin alt. Until I figured out how much gold I'd need to get armor, and bashing was so slowww. Then I got bored with it
Unknown2005-12-13 03:28:59
I made a few alts just to check out the RP in the others areas. I can honestly say that I feel like Glom has spoiled me when it comes to role play. I'm warming up to Mag's and I didn't stick around Celest long enough to pick up anything - its not the there wasn't anything going on. I just forgot my character's name.
But all and all, its fun being a newbie again. My only complaint is that I can't figure out the Newton's quests. It's driving me frickin' crazy.

I used to have an alt in Magnagora. I enjoyed playing her, but I geuss I'm just used to playing Marina.
Kaileigh2005-12-13 22:11:31
I had one of each. I still have a Seren and Glom.
My Seren is therapy. No responsibility. No real skills. Just amusement.

Arix2005-12-13 22:32:42
I always forget who my alts are. is there a way to find out what characters are registered under your name?
Shaeden2005-12-13 23:10:37
Yeah, I started a GLom Alt. Pretty fun, Nice RP there. I'm hanging out in Glom and It's like "Whoa! This guy's wasted me before." but of course the meager fight Shaeden woulda put up, my alt can probably already waste him, 20 levels lower
Diamondais2005-12-13 23:17:23
Dont know how you can find out your alt names, but a good idea would be to message your main from your alt. Message could be complete nonsense or a 'just so I dont forget'.
