The law against theft is an IC LAW.

(My OOC feelings about theft is that it sucks. I know it happens occasionally. I'm glad it doesn't happen much. I'd much rather focus on other aspects of the game.

But my OOC feelings aside---)

The law against theft in the Shadowdancers is an IC LAW following IC LOGIC of which Pawzik has very little knowledge.

I dare you steal a warriors sword. A sword he has spent hours to forge and put great amounts of money into it. I dare you steal it and not give it back. I doubt your character would be able to set foot outside of your city or commune without getting stripped completely of your items over and over again.

To who? Based on what? What experience is there to back this up?

You're applying an OOC standard if you say theft is worse than death. The equivalent of killing someone in the OOC world is driving them to suicide here, which is actually against game policies. Next on the list would be theft. A single death for doing something stupid ranks fifth or sixth at best.

Alright, I play Achaea, I have a more notorius thief there maybe this leads to my what you may perceived as 'warped' perception on theft, but I happen to take pride in what I do. I've stolen from many people, and noone goes as far as to say 'It's OOC griefing, ban it!'.
Diamondais2005-12-14 02:54:22
Most of us have played Achaea, we know what its like. Stealing there doesnt make it right here, the playerbase generally doesnt like it. Thus, they get nasty about it. If its a law in your guild, heed it or risk the punishments they will hand out.

I will obey it ICly of course, I don't want to get kicked out of the guild, but I just think it's a bit off.
Xavius2005-12-14 03:00:56
In Achaea, 90% of PK revolved around theft and insults. In Lusternia, we kill each other plenty without needing petty reasons to do so. In response to this, we have several good sportsmanship guidelines that we follow so that we don't drive the players behind the characters to despair. Theft is one big one, constantly doing quests that negatively impact an entire organization is another, just things like that. You can stir up plenty of trouble here without resorting to theft.

Its based off the opinions of those in charge and the collective opinion of most of the players. There are some who do it yes, but a lot of them get killed many repeatedly for doing so by many different people. As someone said, you wouldnt be able to leave your Commune safely if you stole something of high value.
Xavius2005-12-14 03:11:57
Alright, I think poor Pawzik gets the point. It's time to introduce the girl to one more Lusternian tradition before we move on, though.

S'why I can't fight this topic much IC. Anyways, I just wanted opionons. And since you all think theft is some horrible punishment I know now.

'Cause you joined Glomdoring. I didn't learn that quick enough, and got some well deserve stern talking to. Like it or not, that's the law. Want to argue, join Elcyrion's order. Want to steal/be greedy I'd suggest go indy (independent) and talk to Fain's order. Want to follow orders, stay in Glom. esp. Shadowdancers.

Edit: Ack, didn't read Xavius' comment. Still want my 2c

I have a feeling that arguing about why stealing should be fun to do wouldn't be... the type of argument wanted in the order.
Unknown2005-12-14 03:21:50
Fain loved Yrael, if I remember correctly. One of his main tenants is greed, so I imagine his order would welcome a good thief, as long as that thief didn't steal from any of them.

Anyway, IC theft is usually overreacted towards. "That guy's sword got disarmed, and you picked it up? Want to keep it? Alright, prepare to be enemied to a city and three guilds, robbed of everything you own, and sent back to Newton."

The Nihlists have a special list of 'super enemies' who none of the guild laws apply to; that is, unlimited theft and murder of them with no reprecussions from the Nihilists as long as it is within the game's rules. Quite fun stuff.

First, be nice to the new person. Don't give her the "TAKE IT IN GAME!" Explain gently why you feel that way.

Most of us oocly don't like theft in-game. It's one of those things that just doesn't make sense always in game, like how we can carry ten kegs. I've seen enemies give dropped weapons back to someone else, just because most of us hate theft.

Think of it this way. I can steal from just about anyone I want out of the game. Because I have the skill doesn't mean I use it. If I steal from a friend, the rest of the friends (and possibly the police) will get involved. So I just don't do it. smile.gif

Just want to put my two cents in,
Stealing in other games may not seem that wrong, but here, it can mean hours upon hours of hard work gone in one second, that hurts the player more than the character, not to mention alot of people spend credits to have thier wepons forged for them, so that can mean OOC dollars(well I did anyways, stupid me), personally I just see stealing like this:
hmm, I am to lazy to do anything, I will just go take it from someone else who has put there hard word and long hours, and possibly money into it.

I dont see a problem with thieving. There are skills around that seem almost designed for such a thing. It's easy enough to protect against and adds for some thieving roleplay.. not everyone is full of love and good morals you know. Yeah being robbed would really suck, but once again you have triggers to help protect against that and if that's not enough you always have selfishness.

Actually it all died down when that guy tried to rob My Order's shop. After that was reported to the Moondancers it seemed to be the last straw... and that guy went poof.

My only problem with thieving comes from the limitless nature of it. You can easily 'steal' experience from other players by killing them, but you can't time it right, or use any particular strategy that allows you to steal more than at most around 50%. A loss for the character/player, but manageable because you can be assured that there is a limit to that loss.

There is no such limit with thievery of character possessions or gold. I almost get the sense that leprechaun was coded in such a way to address this, but it didn't quite work out the way it was supposed to. If you catch someone at the right time, with the right tactics, you can literally steal every single non-artifact/cursed possession they have on them. If you get into a shop stockroom, you can take every single one of the 200+ items that might be there.

Or the thousands like I have sometimes *shudder*
