What would you consider the best rpg? Either be online, text or console-based?

Mine would be any of the Final fantasy series.
Shiri2005-12-23 04:01:59
Chrono Trigger.

Unless you count Lusternia.

Failing either of those, FF6, or FF7.
Verithrax2005-12-23 04:49:11
Text RPG: Tough one. Lusternia is a good contender and probably wins, although I like OtherSpace a lot too.

Console RPG: Chrono Trigger, definitely.

Computer RPG: Neverwinter Nights. D&D is a horrible game system for tabletop gaming, but it fits perfectly with a computer game.

Tabletop RPG: Probably GURPS, Fudge, or Risus.

By far, Chrono Trigger.

If not that, FF6.

FFX is decently close, cause it's all pretty.

Heck no. NWN pales in comparison to BG2 and ToB, definitely.

And while I've only ever done D&D, everyone seems to refer to GURPS as Satan's incarnation in tabletop form. o_o

Not sure how you can compare the two really. I love BG2/ToB because of its huge plot and incredible re-playability and strategies. I like NWN because it allows a lot of customization but the plot isn't as lengthty or immersive. Though both are awesome IMHO.

Well, they're both PC RPGs, that made them liable to comparison in my book, heh. But yes, I loved the whole epic-ness of BG2. And the three factors you mentioned. NWN didn't have anything of that, and I don't think what it gained in the transition was worth it. The plot kind of stunk for one thing, but I can deal with a bad plot if the game's good (re: Devil May Cry series). NWN was okay, but I don't know. I guess the multiplayer was better, but I couldn't find any good mods really.

And my creativity stinks so I could probably never make the most of the customisation.

What I think of as best console rpg, Secret of Mana for the snes. Haven't played it for a while though. And yeah, I love BG2 and ToB.

Secret of mana was the bomb too.

Although I can never make up my mind if I like it or SD3 better.

I'd say umm Lusternia/Chrono Trigger.

though if the harry potter games were rpgs i think they'd be up there (that'd be a great story to convert) but alas they sold the rights to EA and now we have games which really could be about anything. (Ugh the first one felt like it was taking place over two days a week absolute max)

Avalon-Rpg.com.

I caused so much stir in that game. Its the only game that I actually ever played an evil character in, and where people were afraid of me. ^.^ *sighs* Memories, from the corner of my eye...*sings*

KoToR I and II, Jade Empire. Greatest games yet.

Before them I was very partial to the Fallout series, and Neverwinter Nights. Suffice to say that I acknowledge the masterful creations Bioware, Interplay and such manage.

Lionhead is awesome too, though. Especially with Fable (lost chapters also) and of course Black and White I & II.

Simon the Sorcerers I and II
So cute!

Asmoth2005-12-23 09:36:30
You're all wrong! LEGEND OF ZELDA BIOOTCHES!

Don't tell me you didn't wanna stab Gannon in the eye when he killed your uncle on the SNES all those years ago!

That wasn't really an RPG.

And CT still kicks its arse.
Leonias2005-12-23 10:27:52
I'm going to have to concur with Asmoth on this one:
I did indeed want to shank Gannon in the eye for killing my uncle.

However,

I also had a crush on Zelda.

PC: Planescape: Torment, Fallout 2
Consoles: Final Fantasy 7, Chrono Cross.
Shamarah2005-12-23 12:43:09
I agree with pretty much everything said so far, and also I'd add Morrowind and Wizardry 8.
