Torment: Planescape, Good call. Forgot that one.

For MUDs, I've really only played IRE ones. I tried GSIII and GS4/Dragonrealms a few times in the last decade.
System Shock, Deus Ex and the Thief series are not "classic" RPGs, but they are really the best I've seen for overall entertainment.
Tabletop--Hmm. GURPS is okay but hit and miss sometimes. I normally follow writers rather than game systems. I love most of what Gygax creates (although I have to disclaim my total objectivity as I do occasional sidebars for his most recent work), as well as Ed Greenwood's creations. Monte Cook does good with the "new school" stuff. Most of this is D&D.
I also loved the original Marvel Superheroes game system--it was fun.

Text RPG: Tough one. Lusternia is a good contender and probably wins, although I like OtherSpace a lot too.
Console RPG: Chrono Trigger, definitely.
Computer RPG: Neverwinter Nights. D&D is a horrible game system for tabletop gaming, but it fits perfectly with a computer game.
Tabletop RPG: Probably GURPS, Fudge, or Risus.

KoToR I and II, Jade Empire. Greatest games yet.
Before them I was very partial to the Fallout series, and Neverwinter Nights. Suffice to say that I acknowledge the masterful creations Bioware, Interplay and such manage.
Lionhead is awesome too, though. Especially with Fable (lost chapters also) and of course Black and White I & II.

Jade Empire was a bit too easy.. Beat that within a few days. Regardless of the difficulty.

Computer: Everything by Bioware/Black Island is extremely good, no doubt about that. Same for Phred's propositions of SS, Deus Ex and Thief.
But the best, in my opinion, is hands down a game that looks BG (first!) look young - Betrayal at Krondor.
Console: I won't be original and say FF 6. 7 and CT were very close though.
Tabletop: ranting time! I have yet to read 7th Sea and Exalted, I have heard they are very good but I won't comment before getting my hands on the rulebooks. Legend of the Five Rings is very good, and Earthdawn is the ultimate in GOOD heroic fantasy. But my favourite system is much better than both of these.
Fading Suns. Beautiful world. Beautiful mechanics. Forget DnD with its d10 HP/level, FS has a way more realistic/gritty system while still retaining its very film-like look. I especially like the rules about using (my own translation, don't kill me if it sounds different in English) feats of concentration/passion. Ah, and the fact that you can create a character you like from the start, without any house rules from the GM that will make you start with a 10 level warrior who has 10 times HP of a 1 level one. No more playing a rookie who wants to be a good pilot/soldier/whomever in the future - you can be a good whomever here. Did I mention about realistic HP already?

Exalted seems like a mix of Final Fantasy 7 and Bleach. I'd go with the whole World of Darkness (old) being the most interesting. I've read a LOT of their books and many of them were great. I never actually played (for real) but I know it's not easy to run it.
Anumi2005-12-23 19:31:39
Console for me is FF6 (if I'm remembering right that this was the one released as FF3 in the US) alllll the way. No contest.
If we're counting more "Adventure" games, Legend of Zelda (A Link to the Past at the top of the list) is way at the top. I know there's a way to work the Metroid series in there, too but it's a bit more action-y. I would have Metroid Prime's babies.
I don't do computer RPGs aside from MUDs and WoW.
Tabletop, I always had a lot of fun playing Shadowrun and Earthdawn. Exalted looks like a really fun game but I've only read it, never had a chance to play.

Console: FFV-IX,FF Tactics, Chrono Trigger, Atelier Iris, 7th Saga, Uncharted Waters,Shadowrun
Tabletop:World of Darkness,Cthulhu, Mage, Exalted, Shadowrun (3rd Ed. and 4th Ed.)&th Sea(forgot about that one. Porte mages are fun to play)
anything that isn't primarily hack and slash. (D&D....grrrr)
PC: Might and Magic VII, Heroes of Might and Magic I and II, Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Ancient Domains of Mystery(ANSI graphics and random dungeons)

Knights of the Old Republic I (II was a tiny bit disapointing compared to I)
Morrowind (Oblivion looks really nice. Hitting people in armor with a sword actually results in bludgeoning! Yay for realism!)
Fable
Tabletop D&D when you have a good group of people. Someone tried to get me into RIFTs, but I just didn't much care for it.
Final Fantasy II. Much for Rydia

Ancient Domains of Mystery is a fun little game you can download for free.(I forget from where) Even though it uses ANSI graphics, the dungeons are all random and there are about 20 classes and 10 races to pick from. Good game to have when you want to kill time
Unknown2005-12-24 00:50:29
No, no, no - that's FF IV, not II. II is the one with level-less advance system.
And Arix - the website you mean is www.adom.de . ADOM is really fun, but after finishing it 2 times (normal ending first, then avatar) it gets a bit boring, unless you try a challenge game. I heard its creator is working on other, even more complicated game. Yes, still in ANSI, but this time with more realistic HP/level system and even more options. I think it's called Jade.

That reminds me... You people all suck, because none of you mentioned Nethack.

I haven't actually beaten it. I just play it when I'm watching late-night TV.

Fallout series,
Planescape:torment
NWN (way better than baldurs gate 1 or 2, I have all 3 and played BG1 all the way through once, 2 for about an hour before getting fed up with the similarities in the engine to BG1, and NWN, along with the expansions, I have played wayyyy too many times. Especially the HotU expansion.)
Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption (<3 this game, annoyed 'cos I lost my install disc so can't replay it. And waiting for sunday to get my new gfx card so I can play bloodlines)
System shock
KotoR
There's probably more, but I can't be bothered to dig them up.

I actually liked FF2, but it was freaking hard.
At least, I thought it was. >_> FF4 by contrast was easy enough, but I just never liked it as much as everyone else seemed to. I can't hold interest in it.
EDIT: And BG2 is similar in engine to BG1, but -man- it's a whole different game, you have no idea.
And I never actually played SS1, couldn't get it to run.
Laysus2005-12-24 01:14:37
If I'm bored of a game in half an hour, it's a bad sign.
Bored to the point where I have had no desire to go back to it and try again.

BG2 is really great. If you actually finished BG1 but are saying you can't get to 2... something's wrong with you as it's a lot, lot better (and longer).
Laysus2005-12-24 01:18:55
Note: I disliked it heavily because the engine really pissed me off. With the lack of changes that I saw, I looked at it, thought back to how slow BG1 was and how that really got me fed up with it in places, and thought "screw this" and put it back on my shelf, where it has remained since.

Exactly. I really didn't like BG1 that much, I only played it through so I could understand all the story for 2.
