If you're not planning on runes, a greatsword is fine for going for wounds. The reason you may hear otherwise is simply because they don't temper well at all, and you have to turn the thing into junk to rune it, as I understand it.

Go for something roughly xx/500+/180+.

Yes, greatsword if you aren't going to use greatrunes. Personally I never stop below 495+/190+, but I'm a masochist.

So after the most recent weapon stat changes ... what's the optimum for blademasters? I've currently got a 34/149/280 but from the gist of what I understood from another thread that's not the best anymore ... I've also got +10 stat runes and +5% wounding runes on said rapiers.

So, I'm curious as to the general consensus - what are the "best" stats for a kata? I've had orders for crazy 218-220 speed tahtoes, but I'm just wondering whether it's really worth the grind.

Anything over 210 will take you a while. 220 is impossible, 215 is close and I wouldn't charge less than 100 credits for one, because it's likely going to take you irl weeks to make.

Someone calculated the odds of forging a 220 speed tahto, and the odds were like 1:2.934234^23 or some mess. It just isn't going to happen right now.

EDIT: Oh, and that's WITH a mallet.

Hrm thanks, so I suppose another question is: How much does each point really matter? From what Shaddus said, I'm led to believe speed is only affected in intervals of five?

From what I understand, yes. For instance, my 214 speed is no better than a 210.

Someone with more battle experience might be able to verify that.
Shaddus2010-04-11 22:24:40
Narsrim used to have a 218 tahto or so, I forget what he paid for it.
Unknown2010-04-11 23:56:42
You can't just temper up a tahto like you can knight weapons? Why not? O_o

Coding problem, probably. REPORT 291 has been in the pipe for ages, and it's universally supported by the playerbase, so I can't really think of any other reason it hasn't been approved yet.

I had a 217 tahto passed down to me, which I passed down to Celeris(Inactive).
Eldanien2010-04-12 01:29:40
That's my insane tahto order. And yeah, it's unbelievably long odds.

I tried to get the game admins to adjust a tahto's stats for me. I even offered to pay a credit fee. No go, it's not done.

Bleh.
Kelly2010-04-12 01:47:49
Well, I managed a 216 tahto, if anyone's in the market. So bump on the question before... is there really a difference between 216 and 218 (assuming speed differs in the 5-interval)?
Eldanien2010-04-12 01:54:52
Yeah. The 218 wasted more stat points.

For kata weapons, Speed is only valuable in chunks of 5. A 218 is worse than a 215 due to wasted opportunity. A 214 isn't nearly as good as a 215; a 214 is a 210 with 4 wasted points.
Unknown2010-04-12 02:49:00
So for knighthood weapons, every point counts then?

It's generally considered that speed only does, and always has, mattered in 10 point groups. 210 is the same as 211-219, etc. It also seemed like at normal balance 10 speed corresponds to 0.1s balance recovery.

Moreover, warrior balances are variable within a range- combined with game/system lag it's hard to pin down the actual effects.

The method that seems to work best for me, and for others is as follows:

Start around xx/xx/260, with the remaining points wherever you think is best. For fighting, that's usually precision. Then have speed tempered lower, and the stat you want tempered higher, until its as low as you're comfortable having it and still being able to outpace sipping/wound apps.

This method compensates for whatever the sum of your personal lag happens to be.

Sounds about right. I've seen a two-handed xx/xx/240 desired too, where the damage is min-ed completely and precision is taken as high as it will go, but that was for a specialised faeling.
