I think it would work. Peeka's always had an extra line in her description for how she smells, anyway.
Basically I could see the person gathering flowers and then removing petals from the bud, and then placing them in a bowl and then using steam to distill a concentrate.

And this would have the added effect of selling more flower pots and flowers. Although perfume isn't always made of flower. Musk from wild animals, herbs, and whale vomit (Yes. Whale vomit.) are also used.
EDIT: Not quite vomit, but rather a greasy, solidified type of bile that washes up on the shore, called 'ambergris'.

The only thing I know about ambergris is that Hannibal Lecter leaves it as a clue for Clarise to find...
Oh, and I also don't know that I've ever met a Lusternian whale.

I knew I'd heard that word somewhere!

Instead of simple perfume, we should have an entire cosmetics skill. Achaea used to have perfume, and make-up and such, and it's somehting I really miss here. Even if they don't actually -do- anything, it would still be fun.
Soll2006-01-16 16:59:59
I was kinda thinking of a whole make-up trade. Perfume, makeup, hair accessories, etc.
Vix2006-01-16 17:18:28
NO! No more new trade skills!

Since make-up, by definition, has no practical use (Unless you plan on being the first Lusternian to go bashing in drag) it shouldn't be its own tradeskill. It should be part of Alchemy or Arts.

Ick. Nah. It would be fine as part of Arts, yeah. As long as the skill in it has a number of different perfumes. I.e
ab arts perfumes
Syntax: MIX
COLLECT WATER IN
You can mix up a gloriusly scented vial of perfume in a variety of scents, if you have the right ingredients. Each perfume also requires 10 drops of water from a vial which can be filled from either a river, lake, ocean, magically flooded room, or nature rained room.
Ingredients:
SpicyRose: rose 1 spices 1
Sunflowermusk: sunflower 1 horehound 1
Subtlesage: sage 1 lily 1 iris 1
Softsea: kombu 3
Vibrantspice: arnica 1 spices 1 kafe 1
Freshmint: pennyroyal 1 galingale 1
etc
Aiwendil2006-01-17 02:08:54
I would prefer this as a just for fun thing. It would be a change from "You gag as..."
"You sneeze as the overpowering smell of roses from whoever wafts into your nose."
Or maybe: "A faint scent floats from whoever."
Then you'd actually need to SNIFF the person (make the emote more useful!)

Can already make tints and stuff in arts from various herbs etc so it makes sense to have this kind of 'nice but not really useful' extra also in arts.
Hopefully it would involve some alternative ingredients to flowers that one would have to go looking for since flowerpots are too random and it would drive the price of flowers through the roof
Also, it would make sense that smelling nice would improve influencing with -some- creatures (I can imagine that smelling like roses might actually be detrimental if your influencing orcs or some other unsavory type)
And I love Soll's idea of it being a single arts skill with multiple options

I want a perfume that makes me smell like I get more experience during bashing I also want a perfume that smells lik eme gettinng more blunt defense and a perfume that smells like it increases my constitution.
mel2006-01-22 09:05:31
Maybe the perfume could smell so 'bad' that your opponent cant get close without involuntarily gaging and thus putting less force behind the attack and doing less damage?
Murphy2006-01-22 11:23:29
then i want an artifact clothespeg for my nose.

I concure. I actually have a REAL phobia of clowns. Can't do the circus, carnival, nadda....takes a lot just to look at Murphy's avatars.
Anyway...yeah, I love that perfume idea.

As do I.
Could it work in conjunction with other smells to.. or like a variant on cleanse? Aiakon doesn't particularly enjoy washing himself (he hates the touch of water, believing it to affect his spiritual connection to the Earth Plane).. he'd much prefer to spray on or apply a variety of fragrant mud on himself when he comes back from Bashing gorgogs.

Scented mud? Remind me to cleanse you next time I see ya
Eyod2006-01-30 11:35:39
i'd like this in arts, especially if the recipes weren't listed and you had to discover the combinations on your own.
