Whoa. A no monthly fee game? Freeeeaky. blink.gif

Bear: Default prebuilts generally suck. I used a modified version of the Rt/Me prebuild that worked pretty well with Wanderlust, Earthbind, Pain, and Blood Song as my spirits, the hex Painful Bond (Deals something like 7...17 damage each time the person gets hit by a spirit, so it practically doubles what my damage spirits do and adds damage to the knockdown spirits), Imagined Burden, Spirit Lightning (or something like that, deals damage with a bonus if casted near spirits), and rezsig.

Vix: Yes, no monthly fee, just the $50 for the program, though obviously the expansion will cost some additional money if you buy it when it comes out.

I haven't actually played ina few months. Aside from the expansion, have there been many changes?
Shamarah2006-01-23 02:47:28
I haven't really played in a few months either, apart from some minor changes it looks like the only big thing they did was releasing Sorrow's Furnace.
Unknown2006-01-23 03:32:48
Actually, you can get Guildwars off Amazon for $40
Yurika2006-01-23 06:44:52
For some reason, that game always freeze up and my computer gets the blue screen and technical issues display, then I have to reboot my comp...so I don't bother to play it anymore.. but just LOVED it though.

I'm just not understanding WoW... whats so different between WoW and GW?

If I own GW, did I miss out on trying the assasins and ritualist?

If I wasn't trying to apply to Blizzard, I probabbly wouldn't be spending so much time on WoW, howwever, I'm really limited in my access since I can't trade on a trial account... Makes me wonder if working for an MMPORG is really something I want to do or not.

first 15 levels of WoW feels like a solo game rather than a multiplayer game to me... but anyway.. I'm ranting and its 2 am.

Level 20 starts to introduce multiplayer more with PLaces like Deadmines, 30+ Groups are useful for a lot of the game 40+ only grinding can be done solo 50+ you should be in 40 man raids every week.

As of now, the Factions test weekend is closed, so yes, if you didn't play, you won't ever get to try out the Assassin or Ritualist unless you purchase Factions itself whenever it's released.

Differences

WoW - $15.00/month
GW - $0.00/month

WoW - Small amount of instancing
GW - Entire game is instanced

WoW - 60 levels of fetch quests
GW - 20 levels of cooperative missions

WoW - Everyone looks the same at end-game
GW - Everyone looks the same forever (to a degree)

WoW - Cartoon colour world of black and white
GW - Fuzzy glowing world of unknown enemies

WoW - Skills are there to do damage
GW - Skills are there for a tactical game experience

WoW - Screw up your build? You lose.
GW - Screw up your build? Change it at the next town.

WoW - Find a template, stick with it.
GW - Experiment and if you're lucky, obliterate all of your foes...until someone finds a counter to your build. And it WILL happen.

WoW - Solo player oriented (until Raids, which are stupid anyway. I'd love to beat whoever thought up the idea of the Raid).
GW - Team oriented, Guild oriented. Can't find a team? Get a henchman, their AI isn't all that bad. I know people who've beaten all of the missions without ever using a single human.

And that is my comparison of WoW and GW. Biased of course, as I absolutely loathe WoW, but to each their own. I tried to be objective, I just have a very hard time finding anything good about the bloody game.
Daganev2006-01-23 20:14:39
I'm with you Edekar.. .which is why I'm wondering why everyone is all googly-eyed over WoW.

If only there were other massive computer game companies in Irvine that required grunts.

However, in your comaprison of WoW to GW..

I think it would be more accurate to say:

WoW - 60 levels of fetch quests
GW - 150 skills requiring fetch quests

If you stop at level 20 in GW your really not going to be able to be good in PvP, and I believe in WoW after level 60 your looking for better equipment and mounts.
Shamarah2006-01-23 20:27:40
Skills really aren't that hard to get. If you play the campaign with a character and do all the quests you'll get most of the skills for each class and then you can buy most of the ones left with skill points. And if you do a lot of PvP, you get stuff called faction through it, which lets you unlock skills/runes/weapons without having to quest for them.

Plus, you don't need every skill by any measure, especially considering that you can only use 8 at a time.
Daganev2006-01-23 20:52:41
Never heard of the factions thing.. is that new?
Asarnil2006-01-23 21:02:06
Factions = the new expansion that we just tested and had a ball with. And Daganev - with Guild Wars, the only skills you really need to go quest for are the elite ones, the rest you will generally pick up fairly easily or just buy in game.
Daganev2006-01-23 21:12:02
Shamarah said you gain faction if you do lots of pvp.. I was wondering if that mechanic was new or not.

And I've played 6 charachters from start to finish in PvE, I know how hard/easy it is to gain skills. Still levels, are much less important, and have much fewer quests than the skills do. In WoW your working for levels, in GW your working for skills.
Asarnil2006-01-23 21:26:42
Ah - you are talking about Faction Points then from memory. They have been around for ages, and you can trade them in for stuff in the arenas from memory.
Unknown2006-01-24 11:00:25
Faction Points have been there as long as I have been playing GW. I can only comment on GvG since its all I do, but I get about 300-400 Faction points per GvG. You can then use the Faction Points to unlock Skills, Runes or Weapon Upgrades

The idea of an entirely instanced world strikes me as stupid. How will it ever feel like other people actually live there?

First respec is free. They max at 5g.

I'd much rather have solo content then be forced to use a computer henchman. And while you can get 60 solo, you're missing out on a LOT of content.

Again, Guildwars is NOT an MMORPG. It is like Diablo more than anything else. The point isn't to run on an experience treadmill. The point isn't to keep making yourself more and more powerful. The point isn't to get more stuff than the other guy. The point is to have fun, and always try new things.

Yeah, PUGs can suck, but the point is you don't have to play with random people. Find a guild of people who aren't idiots, and your problems are solved tongue.gif Guildwars is designed so you do not have to play at all or interact with others if you don't want to.

I love it mostly because the game isn't some marketing scheme to make more money, like WoW and other MMORPGs. And MUD, to be honest (no offence, admins!). All that new free content ANet keeps adding isn't there to keep people who are paying them monthy - it's there to keep their playerbase entertained, and to make their game as good as they can, because they're game designers, and that is what they do.

Sharamah, I've added you to my friends list biggrin.gif Dunno if you're into the PvE at all, but my guild has been doing a lot of Tombs and FoW runs recently, and you're quite welcome to come if you'd like.

I'm working on re-playing the campaign with a new character (a R/Me) but if you see me and you're doing something, I might come along on my E/Mo that I've finished the game on.
