I protest the idea that Xyl was emotionless. That's an over simplified statement. I am willing to provide evidence to support my claim if necessary. While he didn't smile or frown, laugh or cry... he still had emotions and he had his own unique ways of showing them.

I don't know who that amopheous blob elder is, however they appeared to be fighting over the orb of xyl thing.. power often leads to conflict.
