Er, this would break things up even more along city lines, but what about Aether Colonization - village influencing evolved?
Yeah... we could colonize Candyland.... then segregate, kill, rape and do other horrible things to the native Candylandians... just like we did to the Native Americans

What a nasty nasty nasty tasteless joke.

I've gotta agree with Ialie - this isn't the oppressive, ugly IRL colonialism, this is about exploring new worlds, making peaceful contact, and tapping into their resources for the good of everyone (or the Taint)! Wrong choice of smilies to end that post with my friend, and let's not get political here, please.
Unknown2006-02-05 17:52:22
IRL or not, colonization is aggressive and oppressive in nature. Will someone please think of the children?
That or think of the coding nightmares and PK problems. No thanks. Leave villages and aligned settlements on prime.

Yeah, I thought they were intended as a spoof of Spelljammer - made by gnomes, travel the aether between the planes... The basis of the Lusternian planar system is already directly taken from TSR, after all.
You'd have to ask Estarra where she got the ideas. I've never heard of Spelljammer, but then again, I don't do D&D.

Hmm.. I agree with Narsrim here, the experience may not be great for your whole crew, but give it some time. I am only level 50, maybe if I were getting aethership experience it would be pretty decent?
And is there a ruiling as to a yay or nay from the divines as to if we can have CLS (Celestine Light Ship) or OSA (Open-Souce Aethership )
on our aetherships?
I kind of picture the aetherships like Reuu'ohh and Reuu'Aoki from Tenchi (thai spellings used)

One Final Idea.
One possibility for a quest would be have some gnome pirate on prime give you a treasure map or something. A buried treasure chest would then be hidden somewhere in space--the map is not very detailed, but if you found the chest, it would contain a lot of stuff--perhaps akin to the divine presents that we've seen during the Holidays/the Anniversary.
You could explain it as the "treasure chests" being the wreckage of lost/crashed aetherships, and the "treasure map" being a gnome or whoever giving you co-ordinates of where the ship was last known to be? So you could either directly loot the wreck for gold/comms, or maybe tow it back somewhere for a gold reward, working as a salvager. I've loved the idea of wilderness-type treasure maps since I wanted a pirate class in Achaea

Seems to me there may have been an oversight with aetherbashing? If the xp is where it is, fresh from the portal novices can join in on a ship, and hunt on it with massive xp gain, correct? And they aren't limited by their lack of health as with normal hunting.
Possible issue?

perhaps making the experience reward based on level? that way the lower people won't get so much and the higher people will still get some. that would still cause some problems.

For now mine is A.S Ronseyder. Might become S.A.S if Seren decides to get a group of ships...
oh i'm putting my plan for the ship up on my photobucket. tis here
Minus what i already have it's about 2 million gold for the rest, plus 2300 credits to add in all the diamonuts minus the wheel, The cloak and a shop (btw the + is the fulcrux, and the shop is for food, kegs, and my tailoring)
The Sphere with the collector in it will link to quarters where the crew can have their own rooms with whatever they want. The idea of the whole ship is that it's a group of connected crystal spheres each with a different star sign shining above it (Just try and guess my secondary guild skill)
Saran is also planning on doing trips around the aetherbubbles, Taking people without ships to their destinations, stranding them there, dropping more people off, picking up people from aetherbubbles... Etc
Unfortunately by the time i get this all stable someone will be doing it already, So it'll probably be just siphoning nexuses till the she can't take anymore then dumping it in mother (hrm wonder how much those collectors can hold)

At this point, unless there's a huge movement to do so, I'm not inclined to change the names of things. But point taken that in the future we will try to be less "techno".
Regarding Glomdoring, the one thing that may interest it is the fact that you can collect power in aetherspace and siphon it into the nexus. Potentially, dedicated aetherships could generate a LOT of power for cities and communes (if that's a concern to them). Beyond that, I don't think aetherships actually offer any benefits directly to cities or communes (except maybe fees to use their portals). While this may change in the future, I'd have to say that aetherships are more for the benefit of individuals rather than cities and communes.
I like the technomantic feel of the whole thing. If I ever create an Aethership, it's going to be a big wooden thing with lots of golden cogs spinning around and making noise. I like the way it takes Lusternia further away from magic; it's not magic, it's science in an universe that works with rules entirely diverse from the real one (In that sense, it's almost Lovecraftian).

There needs to be a way to get back to a docked ship when you're not on the sphere. I died on Crumkindivia, and if I hadn't been lucky and Anisu was around with nothing to do in particular at the time so she was able to take me to it, I'd have had no way of getting to my ship.
Maybe an Aethercraft ability that lets you summon or teleport to your ship if it's docked on a bubble? I dunno.

If your ship is not docked on the prime plane, it will still gradually use up power (even if its docked somewhere else). Your ship will eventually run out of power and implode, reforming back at the dock on the prime plane. Thus, your ship won't ever get "lost in space" without you--it'll eventually return home.
Yes, it sucks to die on a bubble. However, what would suck even more is if your ship imploded while docked at the bubble, thus leaving you stranded! (BTW, a fully powered ship will stick around for 10 RL hours before imploding so unless you plan really poorly, that will probably rarely happen.)
