Movement to make Aetherships less "techno"?

So I had made this post on the comments thread, and Estarra responded with whats at the bottom...

Is it worth their time to make cosmetic changes? Not necessarily the ones I mentioned, but cosmetic changes in general.
QUOTE

Just a few cosmetic ideas...

Remove the word Module and replace it with installment or construction.

Use the word Algontherine entity, much more often in the help scrolls and skill listings.

Change the commander chair, into Pyschic reigns.

When we were told to buy eggs, I thought for sure they were going to be some kind of Aetheric bird.

Make the Empath Grid, into an Empath fulcrux.

I was going to make a suggestion about the SHIP commands, but I relized thats a change thats almost impossible to make at this point.

At this point, unless there's a huge movement to do so, I'm not inclined to change the names of things. But point taken that in the future we will try to be less "techno".

darn I clicked the wrong one....the democratic process is broken! ohmy.gif
Daganev2006-02-05 05:57:29
A moderator can change your vote, what did you click on and what did you want it to be?
Simimi2006-02-05 06:02:51
meh no worries now, i will just let it be and see how this poll turns out, but thank you much though hun.
In reference I clicked the topmost, but wished the second

Right now, I try to view the aethership as a sort of living entity that the crew connects to telepathically with the modules to guide.

I really would be upset if everything started changing names too. If there wants to be some movement to make it more this or that, fine... but everything as is should stay. I think it would be incredibly retarded if my command chair suddenly changed into something else after it has already been a command chair.

I voted second. With Narsrim on this one. (Though it wouldn't offend me much either way, I just would be confused if things started namechangeing on me. dry.gif

Going to argue your point here, Dag*. Lusternia isn't requires to be 'untechno'. In fact, I like the fact that we broke the 'low tech' mold most Fantasy holds us with by having spacecraft. It shows that we're using Aether as a replacement to RL's metal and elections: a means to enhance ourselves to greater hights.

Face it: if RL had elemental magic instead of mechanics, we'd STILL be sending spaceships to the moon and altering our genes: just with Fire spells and Scries instead of rocketfuel and microscopes.

Besides, the current names are now a part of the story.. a part of our RP. We as a playerbase can call it something different as a slang term, but the 'official' names are what we're stuck with.

Sidenote: I just realized that, with our use of Aethertells, vitual newsboards, ads, xHelps, and everything else, we actually have already created a Lusternian Internet without even noticing. Only thing missing are Aethergames, playable along the strands by different people.

That and Aethersmilies.

*: Messed up my own vote: Change my vote to 'perfect balance'

I don't even think this thread is necessary seeing as Estarra already said that name changes weren't going to be likely at this point. I don't see the real issue with it, but then again I'm not as sci-fi oriented as most of you may be.

We can't actually tell what you DID vote, y'know.
Anisu2006-02-05 09:50:42
I don't think 'command chair' and so on is to techno.

It is just what you imagine it to be, most of you are probably seeing it as something like star trek, where I'm seeing it more like the ship from farscape. The chair provides a magical empathic link to the ship to move in a certain way. But since it's the person in command manning it, and it's an actual chair, command chair is just fine.

What I don't like but that might just be me, is that people refer to 'gunners' icly. I'll always ask what in the name of Estarra are gunners/guns.

I think it's alright the way it is, more or less.

Initially I'd have preferred the whole terminology to be more "traditional" (like, no command chair), but I think it's ok the way it is.

Best in my opinion would be if we could actually customize our modules, so we could make them fit with the manse design. I.e., Elryn could have some sort of druidish setup for the modules in Avaerin, Richter gets the traditional navy stuff for his Stroke of Luck, etc. But I can see how that would probably be too much work for too little gain. Or not?

Either way, I'm fine with the way it is right now.
I don't actually consider the current setup sci-fi or techno really... it all depends on how you imagine the ships, they're fairly open in my opinion.
Narsrim2006-02-05 10:59:28
I like the customize desc idea.

i forsee Defiant-class aetherships.
Unknown2006-02-05 11:47:10
If someone really wants to have their own Defiant, why not? We're not complaining if someone has a Manse designed like the Trump Tower, as long as we don't have to see it, do we?

Regarding customization, I imagine you already can get your module items designed if you want via the regular 50 credits customization, the question is more whether that'd reflect on the messages you get when operating the modules. Like, it wouldn't make sense for the "battle turret" to show up in messages if Richter would have cannons on his ship, or Elryn had weird druidy-style spell weapons... Which would be cool to have, but only works if all the messages involved are "in character".
Unknown2006-02-05 12:33:17
The customization would be nice. A chair is a bit... bleh for me, but I can see how it suits regular metal ships.

Can I just add, aside from the harness... I LOVE how the empathic grid looks in a room? It fits my little forest so darn well!

Less spacecraft, more rennaisance galleon meets early tanker steamship is my vote. Like airships in FF9
Joli2006-02-05 14:16:04
I wish something would be done. It seems too much like "ZOMG SPACESHIPS!"

And it also seems like a huge arse money sink, but I figure that is how IRE intended it to be.
Unknown2006-02-05 14:20:41
I am a big fan of the magic-tech level of Lusternia, its why I like it. I think its too much IRL leeching in that makes you think ZOMG SPACESHIP...because to me it doesn't feel like that at all. It seems like a merging of magic, use of aether and some technology. Like all of Lusternia. Heck we Radio/TV in Lusternia just only gets referenced in the Histories. Aetheric Creatures that allow you to travel the aetherways my empathically bonding them and crafting them into the shapes you think most appropriate fits with Lusternia in every way.

By The way I voted for "No, Its the prefect balance of sci-fi and fantasy."

that's precisely what i think, except i don't know what the airships of ff9 were, but i do know what the rennaisance galleon and the early metal steamships were.

hmm, that gives me an idea for the bad names thread.

FF airships! WoOt!

And Escaflowne leviships? Anyone?
